I Flew 5,300km in 24 Hours to Grade a Gretzky Rookie Card

  • Bear with me, everyone. I know this is a departure from my usual programming, but this one means something a little bit more than the average video, and it's been a labour of love to create and edit this video. If you have the half hour to spare, my hope is that you'll find it worth your time.
    As you may have gathered from the last Tim Horton's card video, collecting hockey cards has been an interest of mine since I was a small child. My dad and I would go to card shows, and it was my job to go around, organizing trades to complete our Upper Deck base sets. But even prior to that, my dad was collecting cards in the late 70s and early 80s, which meant he had a Wayne Gretzky rookie card in his collection.
    After going to these shows, and looking up the values in Beckett Monthly, this card has been safely stored away, but the recent surge in cards again got me wondering just how good of condition this card really was in - and how could I help to keep it that way?
    This video is a story of 5,300km travelled across Canada and back within 24 hours, but it's a story that's been decades in the making. And in the end, the value isn't in the monetary value of the card. It's the story.

    Just a reminder to keep the commenting civil, please :) You can absolutely share your thoughts on KSA vs PSA/Beckett, card grading in general, etc; but downright rude comments get deleted. Thanks!

    Sold my Gretzky RC around 2001 that I pulled from a pack as a kid and I have regretted it ever since. Got a few hundred bucks for it but the nostalgia is worth so much more.

    Enjoyed this one a lot because my uncle also had one of these in a similar condition. His was likely a 7 maybe an 8. For over a decade it sat in a collection box under his bed but it was always one he knew was special.
    I was watching for you to show its nominal value knowing it will never be able to reflect its true value.

    • @ReviewyCA
      @ReviewyCA  2 года назад

      The nominal value is really varied for a level 6 - anywhere from $2-5k on eBay right now.
      Did your uncle ever get his card graded?

    Ive been kicking around the same decision between the same two grading outfits.
    The cost of evaluation, mail insurance and final recognized values between ksa and psa are serious numbers to consider.
    Especially since the card cost me the original wax pack price when I bought it at a variety store decades ago, and it didn't end up in my bike spokes like so many others.
    KSA seems to have a BC satellite office option that I am looking at currently.
    Thanks for the video and information, very much appreciated.

      Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it! KSA does appear to have a presence in BC, but it seemed to me, at the time I looked, that they might not have a physical retail location, but a person who does the evaluations. That might have changed, so worth looking in to. Hope you get good news about your card!

    I enjoyed this video. I bought a Canucks Kirk McLean rookie card, KSA graded off eBay. I assumed it was a PSA or Bucket graded card. But it was KSA, I never heard of them. Now I know they are a legit Canadian Grading company. I might send them some cards from my personal collection to get graded...

    Where are you walking at

  • @sportscastercanada

    Fun adventure. I’m pretty sure KSA does grading in British Columbia but probably doesn’t have same day service?! So back in 1979-80 these packs were just sold in convenience/grocery stores? I’m guessing it was rare for individuals to buy an entire wax box back in those days, even though the packs cost about 20 cents each. Most kids didn’t have much money and probably chased the gum more than completing the set.

    • @ReviewyCA
      @ReviewyCA  2 года назад

      I think they do have an office in BC, but at the time, for whatever reason, the flight to Waterloo was cheaper, even though it was so much further away! As for where packs were sold in '80, I don't know exactly, but I suspect you're right about not many collectors/kids buying whole wax boxes for themselves. Thanks for watching!

      @@ReviewyCA Packs were sold mainly in convenience stores, drug stores, magazine stores, etc. I once bought an entire box of 1976-77 cards at a drug store for $4.80. I was only 11 years old and I don't remember why I had so much money. I started buying full boxes of hockey cards on a regular basis in 1981-82. As for the Gretzky rookie year, I bought lots of packs and got 2 of them. Back then, when I got doubles, I sometimes cut out the photos from the cards if I had the card more than once and that's exactly what I did with my 2nd Gretzky rookie! But at least I still have the other one in really nice condition (ungraded because I'm not a fan of getting cards graded).

    Thanks for a cool and informative video!! Sorry your card didn't grade even higher. I wanted to say I have never personally had a card graded, but wanted to say, I like the you chose KSA as i wouldn't like the idea of the card being out of my hands either, value has never been important enough to me, it's about collecting and getting your favorite player and team, also finishing a set is another huge satisfaction. Back in the seventies when I started, we had buddies at school to trade with, lately it hasn't been as easy, and you have to weed out the ones that are only interested in value. Cool story though, as like yourself the only reason i would get one graded is for the special case to protect it for your next generation. Thanks for the fun and informative trip!!

    • @ReviewyCA
      @ReviewyCA  8 месяцев назад +1

      As far as I know, PSA doesn't offer walk-thru, same-day grading for a hundred bucks, and isn't located anywhere within a cheap flight from Calgary... so, KSA was definitely the way to go for me. Your mileage may vary. I'm not selling my card any time soon, so I'm not too concerned about the perception of KSA gradings as inferior to the American companies. But glad you enjoyed the story!

  • @bigdaddycool1366
    @bigdaddycool1366 2 года назад +2

    A KSA 6 of that card sells in the $3,000 canadian range while the same example of a psa 6 sells for around $5500. If you are keeping it then KSA is fine but when comparing the 2 grading companies its like Pinto vs a Mercedes. Great story though.

    • @ReviewyCA
      @ReviewyCA  2 года назад

      Have you used both services? What's the major difference for you between KSA and PSA?

    • @bigdaddycool1366
      @bigdaddycool1366 2 года назад

      @@ReviewyCA I have used both services. PSA has long established itself as the industry standard when it comes to grading. Americans have much more confidence in the grades and I think PSA has stricter standards. I have been collecting seriously for 40 years, and for my higher end stuff I only trust PSA, Beckett and SGC to get top dollar.

    • @skilledslayerz
      @skilledslayerz 2 года назад

      Psa is American driven in baseball. Hockey on the other hand is beckett and psa but ksa is right behind them and climbing. As a Canadian buyer, I prefer beckett and ksa for hockey as I find them more strict and accurate to the decimal.

      And if it’s a 5500$ card you’ll pay $600 USD up charge to grade the card, plus insurance if you want to insure it and tax. So $5500 minus 12% eBay fees is 660 or net 4840 minus 600 usd which is 780 cad is 3960 net, minus your shipping with insurance both ways to PSA which is let’s say $100 so you netted 3860 assuming you didn’t get dinged for duty, and assuming whoever you subbed it through didn’t switch you card when they were “sending it to PSA”. 3000 - 12% fees is 2640 and you paid Ksa or any other Canadian company 30$ to grade the card. So 2610 net. So it’s a difference of 1200. Except that Ksa grades easier than PSA, so you’d probably get a 7. In which case it’s a wash and the same net total
      So don’t be silly and think that you’re making anywhere near as much with PSA as you think. The majority of people don’t use net take home after tax to determine how much they’re making, they think gross total is what they made. It’s like the clown at the cars show who says he sold 5k at a show but was in the cards for 4K. He didn’t make 5k he made a grand.
      Math is tough, I know. So is relativity. But you can’t convince maximalists to use logic because like spinal tap, this one goes up to 11…..

You might want to reach out to their main contact point at info@ksagrading.com and get some clarification.
