  • "2 things can be true at the same time" is a phrase I grew up with. However, a lot of people (especially online) have never heard of this saying before and it shows. It seems like a lot of conversations head to towards the extreme. I miss the days when society was more nuanced.

I don't think people understand quite how complicated everything is. They assume they themselves are right, but fail to realize that although they may be right, there are limitless other factors that could be taken into account. The right answer isn't so clear when it comes to life, and sometimes both are right - you are just working with trade-offs.

Super freaking important. Thanks for spreading the message. My dad says "they never build a statue to the person who says 'it's more complicated than that'".

You see this a whole lot in RUclips/Twitter drama. You’ll have this one creator reacting to another creator’s video, and they won’t agree with a certain take, and proceed to demonize the shit out of them and make them out to be the reincarnation of Satan. Then they tell their fanbase to not harass the creator that they just made out to be Lucifer the Second, and get surprised when their fanbase proceeds to harass the other creator. Like my guy, how did you not see this coming? Sucks that a whole lot of people can’t respect each other while having differing opinions nowadays.

It is bizarre I have some internet friends that seem completely polarized on the political spectrum. When I talk to them they seem human, but they each make out the other to be a 2-dimensional cartoon and won't even talk to them

Probably has to do with Globalization and the popularity of internet. How we easily find confirmation today, communities that agree with an opinion we previously thought was personal to us individuals. That can confuse someone and trap them in a bubble, specially considering that finding the opposite opinion is just as easy.
What i hope is that the internet just isn't mature yet and one day it will be more nuanced. But in my view, there already are good outlets and channels with mature people, Twitter is not one of those.

A lot of this comes from the tribalism that comes with creating movements and identity groups. Creating those groups is imperative to influence policy and start changing the situation, but the natural human tendency is to other all who are outside of "your tribe." A large part of that is painting the opposition as a monolith, a strawman representing the worst segments of the opposing group, and identifying every member of that group with that strawman. Ironically, 'rejecting the extremes' and 'criticizing both sides' can also become a position that is defended from a tribalistic lens. The solution, in my eyes, isn't to reject partisanship altogether, but to attempt to salvage what little productive discourse can be had with those who hold different viewpoints. Sometimes, it's cathartic to just tear a guy's bad opinion to shreds, and for some opinions, it's the best thing that can be done with it (flat earth, QAnon, etc.). However, we need to be careful not to pass sweeping judgements about the merits of ideas until after examining the ideas for truthfulness. There's a reason why shows where the "middle ground" is represented tend to be dissatisfactory for both sides, and that's usually because what counts as a "middle ground" is decided by the producers and, more often than not, places incorrect ideas on the same level as correct ideas.

I used to frequent quite political sides of the internet, and yes, the extremism is crazy. On both sides it was often "if you don't agree with everything we believe, you are a -(insert political buzzword here)-."
I am thankful that I was homeschooled, and my mum taught me to think for myself and to do my research. The extremism and lack of critical thinking in schools are some of the reasons that my parents decided not to put myself and my siblings through the school system.

This is true and it's sad the school system doesn't promote critical thinking. Like you my parents taught me to ask questions and try to figure things out
