This game looks amazing and I just wanna point out how amazing you are at reflection. Like you are going back and pointing out the pros and cons and it is just so lovely, keep up the good work my man
When I saw the blue lighting on that first attack, I knew this game was going to be awesome. You raised some great points in the reflection at the end. Onwards and upwards!
Imposter syndrome goes both ways! I am finishing a masters degree in computer science right about now. I have dabbled in Unity from time to time and find it quite difficult. Looking at videos like this, I cannot image being able to make something this good in such a short amount of time, it is super impressive!
Pro-Tip on collaborations: Make someone the leader-it doesn't have to be the person who wants it most, sometimes the person who _should_ be the leader is also the person who needs to step down to let someone inferior be the leader because having one is better than arguing for eighteen hours-someone who will hold the artistic vision for the game as a whole. While everyone will get a say, this leader has ULTIMATE VETO POWER, and no one is allowed to be upset (openly) with his decision. You are not here to "have fun" or "make something everyone loves!" You're here to work, you're here to make something and FINISH IT, and to do that you need a leader, not because he's better than you, but because someone simply has to be if you want smooth progress. If you, or the other guy, had been the visionary of the game, then after a couple minutes of discussion, one of you would have just said, "This is the vision I have in mind, so this is what we're going to do. Your idea conflicts too heavily with that." End of discussion, and now you're making art again. Sure, while nursing a sore ego, but the players, in the end, won't notice that the art was created while you were in a foul mood. (This is also why, historically, relationships have had a "man is the head of the household" thing, and why so many people are confused and think this means the man should be a king and his wife a servant: trust me, it's no more fun to be the leader than the follower, but someone has to be the leader. Even when dancing, someone must take the lead.)
I love that you talk about both the pros and the cons of game dev, specifically game jams. I've never worked in a team before, it sounds stressful but also like a lot of fun!
Super cool video! I'm blown away at how much you all were able to make in a limited time, it looks fantastic! The narrative of the video and the editing also made it feel really well put together. Also, as someone who is finishing a CS degree and tutors CS students, I can tell you that the most important skills are being able to tell what code will do (even just a few lines, just reading them and being able to tell what they do or what variables will be set to after they run) and being able to figure out and see the bigger picture of the solution you are trying to code. They are skills that tranced what programming language you learn and I've found that neither of these are able to be taught well, they just come from experience making things and coding. It sounds from the video like you use both of these skills. I'd also say most CS students don't really work on many projects outside of their classwork. Making your own projects is both super cool and a huge show of determination and skill! I guess the short of what I'm saying is (and it may or may not help the feeling of imposter syndrome) that your doing cool things that many people with or without degrees don't do, and that's neat!
Loving all the videos and games you pump out! You should make a tutorial. You make the kinds of games I would want to develop. Maybe you could include coming up with the idea, setting up a plan, making the art, and then coding the game.
Really nice video! I love what you did with the game's jazz poster main menu, it inspired me to put a lot more effort into polishing the main menu in my own game jam game.
I'm trying to get into game dev and this first 15 seconds really hit me, I don't have a coding background and I also have 600+ hours of Isaac with a kinda questionable completion %, loved the pumpkin game and this was also awesome!
as somebody who has a background in both coding and art, I think Art is the Hard part, almost anybody can quickly learn to code, but it takes years of practice to get good at art, also these cats look so cool (Edit: didn't expect to start such a discussion 👀)
Yeah that kind of makes sense, I think you have to enjoy the process of making art especially when it’s in its early stages and not that good to keep with it and that can be pretty hard. Also thank you!
I feel like coding might seem easier, because you can spend a whole day fixing a stupid issue (that you created) and at the end of the day it's solved, and from the outside it looks the same as good code (excepting any bugs, but it's just another day to fix them). But if you can't draw, it's much harder to just "power through" and get things "working". Obviously both things are differently hard and everyone has their biases.
Well, I believe I shall binging all your videos. I was just starting to learn unity, when the story’s broke, and switching to gadot, your videos make me feel better about it. Really fun, and entertaining.
@@mz_eth youre welcome. I have my own Discord server I am working on. Be happy to help you with yours. Probly motivate me to finish with mine. I actually have a few research papers written on the positive mental health aspects of discord, which see as a common topic featuring in your videos.
Oh wow small world, I wonder if I played her game? I always thought it would be fun to live stream playing these games, it’s really interesting to see what people make.
Yo! This video was really fun to watch! Which is surprising to me, because the thumbnail currently looks really unprofessional and thrown together. I think a thumbnail that doesnt have so many random elements could work much better. For example, you could just highlight a higher res version of the cat, and have a cool screenshot on the side bout the boss or something. Also, the title should really reflect more on the fact that you are doing your first team-gamejam, because I found that to be the most interesting part of the video. Keep up the good work :)
ahh I hate hearing this, but thank you so much and you are totally right. I just changed thumbnail, I would love to know your take on the new one. It feels like doing this youtube stuff means I have to learn 20 different skills and thumbnail making is such a tricky one. I hope this one is better!
I think a Rhythm bullet hell game like this would be a great idea. I know there are some out there but why not have more. Honestly if this ever became a full game I'd buy it. I would say that there needs to be more incentive to make you press the other keys. I mostly just spammed the same key and barely moved if ever even if I knew I was going to take damage. Maybe something more Guitar Hero/ Rock Band / Clone Hero/ YARG / Outfox styled in terms of Rhythm gameplay? Take out your bass then play what ever key or fret appears for that part of the song then move if needed, more combos more damage. Or like more RPG esk where certain attacks are better on certain bosses or enemies or like there are certain times when an attack is better on a boss or enemies like a time where the game says parry and you parry with the attack that is best or like press this key and stun them? Or how about needing to do each attack to the music? Better timing equals more damage aka more timing windows? Anyways I thought this game was great and looked great too. Awesome work.
I draw all the pixel art in photoshop (you could use aseprite or mspaint technically) then I bring them into godot and add lighting 2d nodes to stuff. I also use something called a canvas modulate to darken up the scenes so the lights really pop. I was thinking about doing a video on it, but it would probably just be for my patreon since I don't really do tutorials on this channel
Would have loved that you included the arrow keys for movement, otherwise the game is unplayable for left-handed people! excellent video you are very talented and your gfx are just awesome!!
How would you feel about making it co-op, and both players have instruments but share the same ammunition/ notes. So when you attack with note A, your combined ammo count is reduced by one until player two plays a note A. So maybe twenty notes total. It's then fun to unlock the ability to share more notes. You can include limited solos that give brief unlimited ammo. Let watch the second half of the video. The aiming and moving problem is still in the air.
I totally get what you mean about the imposter syndrome, but I'd say you are also at a huge advantage because you learned the art side of game development from the beginning which a lot of people in this genre, myself included, are going to take a long time to learn how to do this. In my mind, it's better to be different and set yourself apart from the crowd, which in turn makes better games and better content.
Hey what engine do you prefer ? I see you are using godot with your amazing 2d pixel art games but I also saw gamemaker studio 2 is for 2d pixel art too ? did you ever coded in gml ?
oh no we ended up leaving it. Even though we worked for so long on it, I feel like I get much more done in these week long jams. But I guess that's crunching
Why do not you release these games on steam? I mean. It cound be finished and released. There are so much potential here! Beautifull art. Rythm games rock hard. New mechanics and there could be quite a few interesting ways how it can be evolved. I mean. It is fun, adorable, innovative. It is cool.
Usually the goal for me is to push my knowledge on game dev, but since this was a team one, I think my best answer is that I don’t think the game play was nailed by the end. And a bigger game is just a huge commitment. It has to be something we’re really in love with
@@mz_eth gotcha, I discovered your channel today and I can easily see pretty much all of those game being made into bigger titles or polish it a bit and push it to mobiles. It already looks better than 90% of mobile games
Thanks, yeah we were going back and forth a lot on controls, it’s so hard with a team to force what you think is right, instead for a lot of things you land on a compromise. Originally I was the one pushing for almost no moment when shooting, but then flipped near the end where I just wanted full reign to shoot any time. But like I said, its more about working together

Thank you, I definitely try, but it always gets easier after the game jam is completed
When I saw the blue lighting on that first attack, I knew this game was going to be awesome. You raised some great points in the reflection at the end. Onwards and upwards!

This is a well produced video!
Also - a well produced game! Nice one!

This game mechanic actually reminds me of the game Wandersong! It's not really well known, but definitely one of my faves
Great video! I've only done solo game jams so far but I'm hoping to do a team one soon. Your game turned out great, amazing work for just one week.
Awesome video ^^ Love to see your thought process and the game came out great!!
Jaw droppingly amazing concept, and I can't get over this art. You're videos inspire me to get into game dev
Thanks! Definitely do it
Your videos are awesome, and your game looked so cool! I’m surprised how much you guys were able to get done in just a week.
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
this game is so cool, you need to continue working on this project!
So happy I stumbled across this channel. Gives me so much inspiration and motivation for my own games.
Thank you! Makes some cool games, you got this :)

Great job to you guys! Really well done, super original. I'd see this making a killing on consoles as well man!
Really nice video! I love what you did with the game's jazz poster main menu, it inspired me to put a lot more effort into polishing the main menu in my own game jam game.
Thanks, I had a similar experience, I usually overlook that stuff for my other games, but something inspired me to do it here
man, what a nice video! Great job
Dude you deserve so many more viewers
You make really good stuff, you are worth looking up to
I love your videos man, the editing quality is so good
Thank you!
Amazing as always! If I get a laptop I want to dabble into game designing. Videos like this really inspire me to learn.
YES DO IT, MAKE DUMB GARBAGE GAMES LIKE ME :)
The visuals of this game are better than so many full games I've played, I'm really impressed
Man this guy has to be the most underrated game dev
Aww man thank you!
this game looks fantastic!!! please finish it if you and the others find time!
You are the reason I got into game dev you’ve inspired me so much 🤩
Your art is amazing
I definitely have a bad case of the impostor syndrome. Super cool video!!!!

Incredible game, Incredible editing, Incredible video
My girlfriends sister took part in this game jam and helped make bingle’s trading co, its so cool to see a creator who took part in that jam
Oh wow small world, I wonder if I played her game? I always thought it would be fun to live stream playing these games, it’s really interesting to see what people make.
i love your videos, you should make them longer for more entertainment
Oh man thanks, I just hate the editing process. Some sections take like an hour to put together and then I just show it for 13 seconds on screen
Great video, inspired me to pickup Godot. I can program abit already but not tried games. Love your art style also its so crisp !
You got this! I had no programming experience before godot, but RUclipsrs like Heartbeast and so many others make great tutorials
Subscribed to your Patreon. Nice work!
thank you so much! it means a lot
I wish I could use glow on godot 4, it looks awesome on you game, congratz!
amazing work

Combos with musical phrases would have been cool sort of like the ocarina mechanic in zelda except a big attack or heal
This could probably be a great full release

I wanna do this stuff...I should do this. I have zero faith I will do this...
You got this! Make something small, the game jam helps to have a deadline. But I mean it’s not necessary:)
Your videos are good! I learn to code now. Yay…
How did you create these amazing effects in the sprites? So beautiful.
