  • Ziwadi was just a year old when she was found wandering alone in the Masai Mara region, following young herders with their livestock and any vehicle that came close in a desperate bid for company. Sadly her search for comfort brought her into danger and we were soon requested by KWS and concerned community members fearful of her approaches to bring her into our care after she suffered an arrow attack when she ventured into community land.

    Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

    After watching the Sheldrick videos, I finally asked for money towards an adoption for my Birthday, and pressed "Suggest and Orphan" and Ziwadi's page came up. I've adopted this little girl and have high hopes that she will live a full life despite everything she has gone through.

    I just saw a video update. She’s been at DSWT for six months and is doing good. She had epileptic seizures early on and they’re under control to the point that she may eventually go back to the wild in a few years. If you don’t know, DSWT has a compound for elephants who can never be released due to long term injuries that are taken care of and will live out their natural life in loving hands.🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️

      I wonder do any of you stop to think about the poor and starving children of this country? It seems no expense is spared on these animals but what about the many human souls that perish before their 10th birthday in this country (about 60%). Because they lack basic neccities like clean water and food and vaccines Meanwhile these animals get a private plane ride to a nursery.. Human being grow up to be grateful, productive and give back to their community. What do these elephants offer you for the future? I know they are cute when they are babies but they do grow up to require an enormous amount of food and water, all for 1/2 of the habitat to supply in the future? Can anyone else see the train wreck In about 5-10 years from all these " rescues"? I know you mean well, I question your priorities.

      @@magicmoney9653 There are organizations to help human orphans as well. If you're so concerned, look into that yourself. As for "how do elephants help anybody" elephants are very useful to their ecosystem. They a keystone species. Look that up.

      While we weren't there at the time, there could be any number of reasons. Living alongside elephants is very difficult for many communities; when herds wander through villages, it can be very frightening and elephants have been known to attack if they feel threatened or unsafe. In this case, the little girl kept approaching young cattle herders and an individual may have felt threatened (after all, a baby elephant is still quite big) or feared her family might wander by to look for her and endangered the community. Ultimately elephants are wild animals and care and respect is needed at all times towards them - its harrowing to think that this innocent girl was injured and we're pleased to have taken her to safety as soon as we were notified.

    • @lanialost1320
      @lanialost1320 5 лет назад +10

      @@SheldrickTrust Thank you for the clarification, but there is never any excuse to harm wild animals. Humans have the ability to adjust their lifestyles to let animals co-exist without being maimed, poisoned, or killed. The habitat for wildlife is already massively degraded, fragmented, and there needs to be way more compassion and understanding from these so-called herders. These ignorant people are not unique, however, in this part of Africa -- animals bear the brunt of human barbarity and stupidity the world over.

Can you imagine how much a starving child in this country would appreciate a private plane ride to all the food and medicine they need. Yet that is reserved for elephants? This broke my heart and brought me to tears. The cruelty of humanity has no limits. Poor little angel was already starving, alone and infested with parasites. Grieving for her mom and heard fearing all the predators alone without hope. And then some stupid humans shoot 2 arrows into her. There is no excuse for those villagers to be so cruel. I don't care if they are starving and worried about her maybe eating their crops. Or if an Elephant had killed someone they love in the past. That baby is innocent of any wrong doing in her own country that has been swamped with cruel humans. They need birth control so that so many children don't have to starve. And so many humans are not taking their habitat away from the animals God put there. When the humans have finally poached, killed, ate, trophy hunted, snare trapped and poisoned all the Elephants, Big Cats, Rhinos, Gorilla's and other precious wild life in Africa, than they will know true hardship. Tourism brings in billions to the country everyday that want to see ( only ) Africa's wild life. When they are gone the entire country will suffer, dry up of tourists and blow away. Those animals are their most precious resource and they are needlessly slaughtered every day. No animal should be wounded and left to die a long horrible death. But I can't say the same for the humans that kill them or try to. I hope they suffer a slow horrible death. Thank God for all of you Heros out there fighting what must seem like a lost battle. I'm sorry if I sound to hard but drastic measures must be taken or the animals will be gone forever.

      Lisa Etinger I understand your caring for the elephants and other wildlife. I do too. But I fear you’ve lost some of your humanity in the way you talk about Africans. If you had walked a mile in their shoes you would likely have a very different opinion. So let’s support elephants and wildlife but not at the expense of our own humanity. True compassion extends to humans as well as animals.

      @@nomiballou8969 Nothing they have been through gives them the right to be cruel to a living breathing creature on this planet. I know what the natives and villagers have been through. I am a highly educated person. I have studied their lives at great length. There are people all over this world that have suffered extreme hardship and heartache. Myself included. People in Vietnam seem even worse to me. Their children have to beg for rats to eat and even in a country infested with rats there is not enough to go around. People need to stop having so many children they can not afford to care for. No one needs more than 3 at the most with out the ability to care for them. This problem is all over the world. Especially places such as Africa, China, Vietnam, India and Asia. I have not lost an ounce of my humanity but some humans are not worth the space they take up on this planet. Do you think we need child rapists and murderers ? Should we take your advice in that situation ? Just console the victims and pray it's gets better ? I know lots of humans that are not worth the life of an animal. Animals don't kill and torture for sport and fun. Only humans are capable of that horrible deed. My humanity does not extend to humans that do not deserve it. I will pray for you since you think a human having a terrible lot in life should get away with barbaric treatment of animals. You must believe animals beneath us. People like you that sit back and just hope things get better are why the world is the way it is. We all have choices and must have consequences. The punishment should far out weigh the crime. That is the only way to stop the cruelty to humans and animals. So sit your butt on the side lines and hope. I'm on the front line in this war and am more than willing to die for the cause.

    Poor baby. Looks like all the herd is curious and accepting. Love and security are the best medicine. Any chance you can enlarge the print of the captions?

    I recently saw the story of an English WWII survivor, a paratrooper who had been dropped into northern France Separated from his unit, and with German soldiers looking for him, he was taken in by two older French women in this little farm. He remained for the duration of the war. When his parents were told he was missing in action, his father was immediately struck with blindness, and remained that way for several months.

    💔Heartbreaking to hear she was shot with arrows from the community but WHY knowing she's a tiny little thing? That bothers me alot. I'm so thankful she's recovering well.
    **I understand why she was shot from a previous answer but I still think it's so wrong. 😟👎
