Ugh this case. There’s a French documentary on Netflix about it. It took me weeks to get through because it is just so damn disturbing and upsetting. The footage of the funeral and the tiny kid sized coffin still haunts me with Christine barely able to stand and howling with grief and collapsing at the funeral (all in the documentary). I am still amazed the parents managed to stay together and went on to have a few more kids. Also they were so, so, so young when it happened. I’ve done a deep dive on this on my own in the last few years and it was definitely someone in the family, not Jean-Marie’s workplace. And as sad as it is with the original judge taking his life, he had no business being on the case in the first place due to his inexperience. He courted the media, loved the attention, and focused on Christine as a suspect and that was it. Too proud to admit he effed up and that he wasn’t culpable which is why I don’t have much sympathy for him. I absolutely despised him in the documentary.

I actually haven't watched the Netflix documentary but certainly feel like I should - however I also don't doubt what you say about it being disturbing and upsetting! Another great video Aria! I appreciate that you always do a thorough analysis into what took place and the drama that unfolds after while still keeping the story rooted in compassion for the victim. It’s a tricky balance but you always handle it beautifully!
1. How were the callers' voices disguised? To this day, isn't there technology to compare the disguised voices to known suspects? Why couldn't the calls have been traced? 2. Why has the justice system in France been so lenient on the multiple suspects (excluding Christine) arrested? No polygraphs or brain scans? 3. How are the Villemins, today? I know Jean-Marie regretted killing Bernard LaRoche, but is he still convinced of his guilt? 4. Michel and Bernard were close friends. Michel neglected to mention the part of Gregory being in the Vologne while everyone frantically searched behind the house, the hills, etc. It wasn't until Jean-Marie confronted Michel about exact details said in the call that Michel mentioned the Vologne. Michel could have been the inside member of the family tipping off Bernard all along. It could have been Jacky, too, as he was mistreated by the family as the eldest half-brother. 5. It could be the Villemins supported the case being reopened because it wasn't just one "crow," but multiple. Bernard was likely the actual killer, with Marcel and Jacqueline part of the conspiracy making calls and writing letters. On at least one recorded call, they were able to count 13 stair steps which is identical to the Jacobs house. The inside person is still officially undetermined but likely, as mentioned above, either Jacky or Michel, who both had their reasons for aligning with LaRoche against Jean-Marie. 6. Don't forget Murielle Bolle. Her and Bernard's versions of the timeline conflicted. One or both weren't telling the truth. A nurse claimed she instructed Bolle how to administer insulin for her mother. Why wasn't the needle and insulin found on the riverbank ever tested for prints or DNA?

Right? No family is perfect. I think if something was going on in my family I’d be able to sort of work out where the dysfunction began and with whom. And narrow it down from there.
It's really interesting to hear different people's opinions here in the comments on whether it was a family member or someone from work! I definitely get why you'd think that, Sadie! It's all part of what makes up this super puzzling case...
@@Aria.Inthavong those are great books. Especially if you read French as Simenon was an outstanding master of the language. Would suggest " la nuit du carrefour"( maigret at the crossroads) for instance. Or "maigret et le corps sans tete" ( maigret and the headless body).
That's the horrible thing about vigilantes. We will never know is Bernard did commit the crime, if he did then it's good he's gone, but if he didn't we tarnishing the memory of an innocent man, creating an ethical paradox. I hope the new technology they found does help, it would be a great relief to father knowing if he was right of wrong, no longer living in uncertainty
I agree, Skyh1gh. The murder of Bernard Laroche just contributes to the cycle of violence while also just makes solving this case even more difficult - which I think Jean-Marie eventually realized which is why he's still trying to get answers. I wonder how much he regrets his actions.
The handwriting thing against the mom seems flimsy to me since the same experts were saying the handwriting is similar to Bernard's before so...it looks to me like they were saying it's similar to whoever was on the radar at given time. Bernard got let go and died, so they changed their tune to Christine. Or the two people had similar handwriting. Which is why this thing is a problem...if two different people really have handwriting so similar then it's not a conclusive evidence and cannot be shown in court. The rope thing...eh...it wasn't the same rope it was "similar" which means it could be of the same maker, but that means different people can own it. Also they never had any clear motive as to WHY Christine would kill her son and send those letters.
Hey Nina! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. That's a good point about the handwriting experts, although perhaps they had different experts analyzing them at different times? The lack of a clear motive for Christine killing her own son is also a good point, and probably partially why she was eventually acquitted. Appreciate your comment and hearing from you! Thanks!
That's a great point, merchantfan - they were probably desperate to find answers because I'm sure everyone in France was demanding justice. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I knew this case was going to be wild when one of the first dudes shown looks exactly like the french doppelganger for Barney in How I Met Your Mother. 😂😭
The authorities should re-interview Muriel. I'm positive she knows who did it, or even she killed Gregory. You mention the Jacobs, but you don't give a reason why they would do it.
Ouais! Je parle Francais mais ma grammaire quand j'ecrire est terrible! Your written French is great! Are you French?? Very sad case though for sure, and I'm gonna add Cedrika Provencher to my list, MERCI CATHERINE!
Could the letters not be compared to the writing of everyone in the factory, just have them all write word for word the letter and compare? is that a real thing or only on TV shows

It seems like a few people like you are suspecting the uncle! Thanks for watching and sharing your theory, Roozbeh! That's a good question as to why the uncle was called but not the dad.
very interesting question. Why ? It is clear and logical..impossible to call the father because the father is working in his factory and does not answer directly....in 1984, there was no iphones. The crow-killer distorts his voice calling the uncle but impossible to distort his voice with the person would have answered in the factory !!! This bird is the most clever bird of all creation !! We need your Columbo about this case !!
Where else can this documentary be watched without joining Netflix and with English subtitles? Other sites online have it, but not with English subtitles.
This case is a shit show!! It seems the most likely killer is someone affiliated with Jean Marie’s work/union. I’m curious as to what motive the police had against the mother or if they were literally just arresting everyone in the family. That poor woman couldn’t even grieve.
A shit show FOR SURE, Jessica! I'm curious as to why we didn't hear about more suspects from work/union - I would hope they investigated against them. Very tragic for Christine to be arrested and accused of killing her own son while trying to grieve his death! No wonder the government had to pay them restitution, but I don't even know if that'd be enough for me. Thanks for watching and commenting as always, Jessica!
The Netflix documentary interviews journalists and investigators who were there at the time and who either covered the story or investigated the case. The parents did not participate (it’s been decades since they’ve done media interviews) but you see them through archival footage.
Ok so im confused.. when the "crow" is making these phone calls no one can identify the voice? Is it a man or womans voice calling? Cuz i doubt this person had voice changing technology.

For the uninitiated, 1984 in French is Mille Neuf Cent/Dix-Neuf Cent Quatre-Vingts Quatre.
I miss Aria speaking French in videos. I MANIFESTED this 😂
Son français lui permettrait de se débrouiller en France s'il venait ici.
I don't know how the person who got the original phone call saying the kid was dead didn't recognize the voice. I also don't know how Jean-Marie didn't recognize the voice if it was a family member. Very odd. By the sound of the letter, it sounds like someone from work.
Peace & love to you & your channel Aria the Phenomenal Inthavong.
Peace & love to YOU Ambush bug!!!
@@Aria.Inthavong and forever more
So that's why they say this was the first Jon Benet type case.
I definitely see a lot of parallels! Thanks for watching and commenting, barriolimbas!
deym..the killer's choice of words that gave me chills!
Same! I got chills too when I first read them!!
French government: YOU GET ARRESTED! YOU GET ARRESTED! YOU GET ARRESTED ! WE’RE ALL ARRESTED!
Hahaha, they inspired Oprah!
That moment when this comes out and you are watching the documentary on Netflix...
Oooh is it good? I actually haven't seen it yet!!
@@Aria.Inthavong it is
I recently read Maigret and the idle thief by Georges Simenon. This sounds like a job for superintendent Maigret.
Ooh I've yet to read any Maigret! Would you recommend it? Will add some to my list!
The first "attorney", just before killing himself, wrote a very emotional letter and claimed Bernard Laroche is innocent !
because Bernard'timing does not match;;;impossible for him to kidnapp and kill the poor baby !!
The amount of effort the French police put into this case initially, was amazing. And that now, they're still trying to figure this out.
I love this-- it reminds of Lectures with my favorite teacher at school
Crimes that involves child murder will never be easy to get through. You have a strong will, Pop pop.
Thanks, Redward, but you also have a strong will for powering through them! I appreciate you watching even though they're tough to get through!
@@Aria.Inthavong Thanks, Pop pop. It is really hard. Still, we are glad you've shared this with us.
Thanks!
I've heard that handwriting analysis is pretty unreliable, so it's possible at a certain point the authorities were just throwing ideas at the wall
That's a great point, merchantfan - they were probably desperate to find answers because I'm sure everyone in France was demanding justice. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I think the uncle Michel never received a phone call telling him Gregory is in the river. He knew because he’s the crow, but that’s my theory.
Aria's french accent here is topnotch
Thank you Steve!!
Son français lui permettrait de se débrouiller en France s'il venait ici.
I knew this case was going to be wild when one of the first dudes shown looks exactly like the french doppelganger for Barney in How I Met Your Mother. 😂😭
Ahhh I didn't see that haha! Thanks for watching as always, Cheyanne!!
I have never been so early, love your dedication Aria
I appreciate YOU being so early, Manal! Love you showing up here, watching and leaving a comment. It means a TON to me!
The authorities should re-interview Muriel. I'm positive she knows who did it, or even she killed Gregory. You mention the Jacobs, but you don't give a reason why they would do it.
I always forget you speak French too! 😄 Je n'avais jamais entendu parler de cette histoire. Intéressant mais triste...
If you are looking for more intriguing unsolved cases, the disappearance and murder of Cedrika Provencher is a fascinating one, in my opinion.
Ouais! Je parle Francais mais ma grammaire quand j'ecrire est terrible! Your written French is great! Are you French?? Very sad case though for sure, and I'm gonna add Cedrika Provencher to my list, MERCI CATHERINE!
Could the letters not be compared to the writing of everyone in the factory, just have them all write word for word the letter and compare? is that a real thing or only on TV shows
Your accent is very good I'm impressed 👏!!
Thanks so much, Yosra! My dad actually studied in France and I have lots of family there - I don't speak as much as I'd like to though, since I don't know many French speakers here in LA!
I believed it to be the uncle also when I watched the documentary on Netflix. Its such a sad and complex case.
So, we have to do a séance to solve this? Alright.. Everything gather around, we are going in!
Yey! I can’t wait for your Philippine video. 🇵🇭❤️
I can't wait for you to see them too!!

Why was Michael Villemin not part of the suspects list???
We call it "L'affaire du petit Gregory", and yes it's always a case that haunt a bunch of people here in France...
Thank you for saying it like my Filipino Aunties & giving me rushes of nostalgia, lol. "You-choob."
Mahal Ko, gwapa
HAHAHA I am so bad about that, I don't know why I've always pronounced it like that!
Bonjour! Aria Inthavong you should check the case of disappearing of Cedrika Provencher, it’s was a infamous case that was big In Quebec , Canada where I lived, also love your French accents from France compare to mine French Québécois lol.
Bonjour LTKhuon!! Thanks so much for this great suggestion, I'm gonna definitely add it to my list. I haven't covered a Canadian case yet, so that'd be great to look into. And I love the French Québécois accent!!
@@Aria.Inthavong Alright can’t wait to see it!
En France 90% des Français connaissent cette histoire !!!
It's the uncle. Why did the killer call the uncle and not the dad?
My gut is saying this was the uncle just making the investigators waste time resources and patience on the union, and wild goose chase
It seems like a few people like you are suspecting the uncle! Thanks for watching and sharing your theory, Roozbeh! That's a good question as to why the uncle was called but not the dad.
@@Aria.Inthavong we should open up a PI firm. Call it Aria and Roozbeh Investigation firm and associates.
very interesting question.
I’m curious, was there no way to trace the phone calls? It was it a star 67 type deal?
All I have to say is "wtf" and it's the kind of video I'll be watching two or three times just to get the details straight. Damn, what a crazy case

Great video. But the safety pin in Aria's ear makes me a n x i o u s
Ah, a true French crime passionel. I have read about this very convoluted case

It’s 1 am so I can’t watch scary stuff but it’s Aria so i feel safe😂🙏🏻
I remember seeing the trailer for the documentary on this story but is Aria Inthavong’s presentation less than a compelling documentary? I think not.
Very kind of you to say, but I'm sure the Netflix documentary is MUCH better than me just standing in front of a whiteboard haha

No, the person disguised their voice/muffled it on the phone
@@ameliesayshola8854 🤣 I doubt they were that skilled to sound like the opposite gender. No matter how hard i muffle or disguise my voice u can still tell its a female speaking. 🤦🏻♀️
@@Prifitbeauty I watched the Netflix documentary. I think it’s a man but it’s really hard to tell, quality of the recordings isn’t great. You watch and decide for yourself!
@@ameliesayshola8854 i didnt know there was a documentary on it. What is it called?
@@Prifitbeauty look for Gregory or Little Gregory on Netflix. There’s also recordings of the harassing phone calls on RUclips but they’re all in French. I speak French fluently and they’re hard for me to understand, the audio is pretty staticky and terrible. One of the things I don’t understand is why these people entertained conversations with the person. Some of the recordings go on for several minutes. There’s a lot more to it than simply a boy being killed, a messed up family with jealousy and rumors of incest/paternity (not Gregory himself but members of the father’s extended family).
I like your cut emo Ryan Bergara I'm definitely gonna be watching more
