What an awful tragedy! Imagine being asleep in your bed to be abruptly awakened to your house or apt. Building falling down on top of you!! Laying there trapped, scared, cold, hungry , waiting for rescuers hoping & praying someone hears you , finds you. Wondering if your children are alive and other relatives in nearby buildings are alive and you have to stay where you are and wait. And if God willing you are found to get medical treatment and leave hospital and return to ?? No home, no clothing, all personal memorabilia gone! Prayers to these poor people from Pennsylvania, USA

Earthquakes don’t kill people, it’s the falling buildings that do. It’s so very tragic that virtually all of these deaths were preventable - over 40,000 known dead to date and the fatality count continues to climb. With every day that goes by, fewer and fewer trapped survivors will be rescued, it’s now been over 10 days since the quake. It devastates me to think of the suffering of the people enduring weeks of being trapped under rubble, cold, thirsty and in pain, praying and hoping desperately for rescue, only to die at last, it’s beyond horrible. Turkey has to get serious now about developing seismically-safe building codes, and especially, enforcing them. There will be a lot of rebuilding, this is Turkey’s chance to get it right this time, cost be hanged. Saving lives in case of earthquake, fire, etc., should be the first priority in designing and constructing every single building. If money is tight, just build more slowly, don’t cut corners. I hope my country and others will send aid to help in the rebuilding. I’m praying for the people of this region, God goes by a different name to me, but there is only one of Him, after all, He will hear us.

So many lives, is hard to even think about it, it takes the breath away.
I noticed a lot of those buildings used very small diameter rebar including supporting columns and not very densely packed, a lot of walls were just fill in with bricks and concrete which stands no chance versus earthquake, some buildings flip over indicating weak foundations which where placed to shallow in the ground. I'm not an engineer but I seen construction sites in America, most structures are build with thick steel beams incased in concrete in that concrete rebars are way thicker and more densely packed and foundations are dag deep into the solid bedrock.
Sorry to say that but engineers need to make drastic changes there, buildings shouldn't collapse on such a massive scale.

There are architects in Turkey who are unemployed. Not enough contractors are interested in earthquake retrofitting because they don't want to pay for it. Bribery and pay-offs circumvent Turkish building codes. Back in 2019 Erdogan bragged about giving contractors a pass on following building codes. Sadly, bribery and cronyism has been a way of life for a very long time in Turkey. This culture of bribery also afflicts other countries that were previously conquered by the Ottoman Empire

Months before this earthquake, the U.S. was itching for Greece & Turkiye to go to war with each other. The U.S. was supplying Greece with military hardware which Greece in violation was placing on islands just off the Turkish coast. Similar to what was done with missiles close to Russia's borders with Ukraine.

Footage there showed an apartment building that had fallen over rather than pancaked. That would have provided more opportunity to survive, but would have been a hard landing for people higher up in the building.

The guy said: They didn't send heavy machinery. WHY NOT?
Who are they kidding? What does one or two Excavators do?
An Excavator only moves rubble from side to side. The rubble need to be REMOVED from the site completely using Bulldozers and Dump Trucks.

Job 2:11-13 talks of how Job's friends heard about his suffering and visited him "..to mourn with him and to comfort him..." [KJV]. The story shows how they were speechless for seven days. No words were enough to comfort their friend. DW's graphical coverage of the situation that befell the People of Syria and Turkey, has placed me exactly in the position of Job's friends. What can I say! What words can I use. I wonder if there are suitable words that can be used to bring comfort to these friends. But I can pray for them.
