He's not even known as a drummer, and he's better then most drummers. His drumming alone is genius. He's also one of the greatest singers, song writers, synth players and harmonica players of all time. Talent like Stevie doesn't come along too often. It's more than just an extraordinary technical ability, his music is profound and beautiful. He touches people in a way few artists ever do.
+Graham Black That's exactly right. Amazing composer, amazing singer, amazing musician... plus strong business sense to gain control of his own music catalog and start his own label. He's a genius creator and innovator. If you want to know anything about music in the second half of the 20th century, you pretty much have to start with Stevie Wonder.
I was lucky enough to see Stevie Wonder perform this drum solo at the Top Rank Suite in Southampton in the late 1960's. Absolutely incredible and something I will never forget.

For what it's worth, Stevie use to rehearse with Jimi Hendrix, when he was a lad. Jimi would stop, and turn around and just look at him, in amazement. He is truly a Wonder!
Yeah Stevie was influenced to a degree by Hendrix which is why he used that classic Horner Clavinet so well and recorded albums at Electric Lady studios
For the record, peeps, Stevie Wonder once substituted for the Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts on a live BBC radio show when he could not be there...Stevie happened to be on the bill...and jumped in w/no rehearsal...just blew the roof off too...

It is understated how magnificently talented Stevie Wonder's band was to keep up w Stevie. They were Right. On. Point. And weren't thrown off by Stevie's in-sane timing.
If the man never played an instrument, never wrote a song, and never produced an album, he'd still be one of the greatest singers ever recorded. But he did all of those things, and each amazingly well. And that, in my estimation, qualifies him as quite possibly the greatest musical talent of the past forty years.
I remember a concert in Oakland, California, called Soulvile 1966 or Soulville 1967, at which Stevie took a similar solo. We happened to be sitting behind some cranksters who got so caught up in the emotion of it, they started hollerin' to each other, "He's on crank, he's on crank." Of course he wasn't, it was pure genius. The cranksters had a singular, dopey point of reference. Po' thangs!
