The is the easiest and fastest way to do it. I have watched a dozen other methods on RUclips and nobody else has a method this simple and the fewest amount of tools. I did it myself without a second set of hands or feet and it worked out great. Kudos to your daughter for being out there with you.
Loved this. Finally a way to do this simply! I am building a shorter fence in my back yard to keep out dear and elk. Now I can do it WITHOUT needing all the extra tools such as drill bits, crimping tools and the like! !
Thank you for posting this. I was really expecting to see some negative comments from the old school farmers being that you didn't use pins. I need to make a small goat pen and this method seems like it will work just fine and will also require less of an investment in tools. Thanks!
Awesome 👍...I do it similar except I use 6" structural screws ...one per side... And a piece of rebar to wind the wire..the rebar is permanent and I use the winding tension to hold it in place...if that makes sense
When inserting the long screws, I suggest slightly altering the angle and/or depth of bite so that the points do not collide at a single point. Tim did this, but did not say it. Also, since you are using a chainsaw, I suggest cutting a shallow notch (135° or shallower) at each end of the H brace piece BUT be sure the two ends have aligned notches, AND account for loss of length by cutting the H brace a little longer (OK, that makes it less easy, but it will be better).
That was a great video and I'm gonna do it this way. One question. Did you hammer down tight the top staple when done or leave it loose to further tighten wire at a later point?
I’m sorry to hear that. I guess you will have to use pins in the area that your horse pushes on the fence. They usually have a favorite spot to rub or lean so you probably don’t have to pin all of your braces.
His method is very “eyeball” but if you want the math answer, 8’-10’ wide is the general rule. I’m fencing in my backyard for dogs , not livestock, so I’m using square 4 bys and setting the corner brace posts about 7.5’ apart. Cross brace height should be about 2/3 the distance between corner post and brace post, so for me it’s about 5’ high.
*Your wife Sophie was AWESOME for helping, and staying quiet.*
Rebar or long big nails in horizontal brace or your brace will be on ground in a few years. If brace wire get loose, the brace won’t fall out.

Glad we could help. Hope you project goes well.

Thank you so much there are several videos but none are right this is the way I was taught, a great refresher course. You’re the man
Thank you Tim Rogers and thanks to your daughter. This absolutely worked great for me!
Best & easiest video on H-brace. Thanks
Thank you both I think I'm going to use this method because it looks easier and less expensive tools.
Thank you. Your daughter is awesome 👏
Great video and easy tips..starting a new fence this weekend..thank you
Wow you made that look so easy. Easiest I've seen yet. Thanks!
Nicely done. Sophie is a great helper; does she hire out? : )
In the past I haven't used pins but rather 8-10 inch large lag screws (with the hex head) and drive those in to each end.

This was very well done, both of you. Easy to follow
That was a great job. I learned a lot and will do it your way. Thank you.
SO much easier than anything else I've seen on RUclips. Now if I can just find the receipt to return all my 10 in pins, etc..
Don’t return them lol. Just do it right
Wow, this was super helpful. Thanks!
Why didn’t you level the cross piece?
Ohhhh!!!! Tension is being pulled bottom to top via wire. That load is transferred back to the original post via the horizontal beam. Triangles!
Why not use barbed wire for brace wire to discourage cows from rubbing on the brace?
simple+solid video. thankful! Sophie is pro
That was a great video and I'm gonna do it this way. One question. Did you hammer down tight the top staple when done or leave it loose to further tighten wire at a later point?
I don’t think it makes much difference. Hammering it down when you are done is probably a good idea.
Nice to have a good helper
Very helpful I am re-doing my property fence And this will save me some cash.
Have you had to re tighten wire with fence on over the years?
Nope. My fence is still tight.
it's been a few years, how'd it hold up?
All of my H-braces are still holding up fine. The paddock has had several different horses in it. They haven’t broken anything yet.
Just from watching it seems like drilling a 3/8 hole and using brace pins would be a whole lot easier and more reliable. At least that’s how I do it.
Could I make a h brace fence with 4 inch diameter posts? I couldn’t find any 6in posts in my area.
Yes. Many people use 3.5 inch posts too.
Thanks
Any problems with the wire unwrapping over time without leaving a stick, rebar or anything?
We have never had the wire unravel. If I was running miles of fence under high tension I might leave a bar in the wire.
Tim Rogers awesome, thanks. We will definitely be using your way of bracing. So much easier!
I tried the screw method an our horse had the brace on the ground by day 3

Could this be done for a corner post also ?
Sure. I do all of my h-braces this way. In the straight or in corners.
Thanks for this well done.
Thank you.
Encouraging father
How far apart do you put your posts and how wide are your H braces?

oooh! Sophie is a cutie
I did it myself thanks to Woodprix.
