My favourite coloured pencil is Chrysocolla Blue (Caran D'Ache Luminance, named after a rare gemstone). I adore the colour turquoise, and this is a very beautiful, pure one. Apparently the meaning of Chrysocolla is communication, teaching, and transformation, which seem like very Natasha qualities! I love your helio turquoise on here too. Thanks for this super-calming video Natasha 🐦

Yes to all the slightly different shades for different moods on different days! I've just recently realised that having different sets means slightly different shades and not just the same colours in more or less expensive brands. This is not a good thing for my spending, its wonderful for the colour lover in me. The only thing is I love bright colours too. And I love having all the colours... I still have my pencils sorted by brand. One I might sort them by colour 😊💙
Oh and I still absolutely love watching and listening to your swatching 💙💙💙

What a great session, the fact the pencils were all shades of blue/grey was really interesting for comparison. I would love to know how you store your pencils? Are they colour grouped, or brand? Do you have them stored loose? Love hearing of ways people have their art supplies stored for easy access when inspiration strikes... Keep up the wonderful work Natasha x

Watching this two years later, but there are some very lovely blues in the Derwent Coloursoft line. Particularly the lighter blues like Baby Blue, Iced Blue and two favorites: Cloud Blue and Pale blue. There's also a nice Indigo and Prussian Blue. And since you include some blue-grays, there's also Steel Grey and Mid Grey, which are on the blue side. 88% of the Coloursoft line is lightfast.

That's how I plan to have mine too - though I haven't thought about putting them upside down... will have to consider that option🤔😊. Mine are in a plastic container that little tomatoes came in, with a writing on it (it's in polish, so these aren't the exact words) : greengrocer: little tomatoes - and I just think it's adorable😚 just wanted to share 😄 now back to watching!

Thank you for sharing! I cannot think of a realistic color I do not love. Not into neon colors though. I only buy open stock of the other brands looking for the highest rated pigments used. The Derwent Lightfast & Drawing Pencil are the heavier ones because the core size of both 4mm. Luminance is 3.8mm. The Derwent lightfast barrel is also a tad wider than Luminance and the hardwood used is pretty dense and heavy in both. I like the feel of the three DD, DL & CDL in my hard too since I have arthritis and they cause less pain.

I absolutely love this! So looking forward to the rest of this series! I love your work and all your swatch vids. They are so relaxing. I love collecting art supplies (alcohol markers & coloured pencils mainly) and swatching and organizing them is the best part. I find it so relaxing for my ocd-tendencies haha
From watching other artists on YT do this, feel I need to comment that browns are just dark oranges/red-oranges/yellow-oranges and pinks are tinted reds/red-violets. It really irks me when they separate them and treat them as their own when we don't do that to dark or light blues, purples or greens. I'm sure you know this as a pro artist LOL, but thought I'd just comment this out into the internet void.
Keep up the great art and great vids. Truly love your vids and so glad I found this channel.

They're up to 150 colors now, so I have to work on getting the other 30. Prismacolor has been my go-to pencil for years, but I'm always willing to try other brands.
Some of the other muted blues I think you'll like are:
    Sky Blue Light
    Cloud Blue
Periwinkle (more of a muted grayish blue)
    Mediterranean Blue
    Blue Violet
    Indigo
    Light Cerulean Blue
Any of their cool and warm greys.
And probably some new ones I don't have yet. All right up your alley, as we say in the US. 😁

CD pencils are not always consistent but oh boy they got everything else absolutely right. Have you smelt a full box of them? You don't mind paying the price when they put so much thought into pleasing the artist. Now compare it to a full tin of DL lol. No comparison.
My Holbein's are beautiful. I haven't found a colour in the set I don't love. Yes I know some of them are not lightfast but I don't care. The pastels, the pinks, powder blues, neutrals and range of soft muted to olive greens are gorgeous. This is the set I would gift to someone looking for fun and joy. They don't layer as well as DL but again; moi doesn't care.

Fun fact: as per Wikipedia, ‘ Denim' originated as a contraction of the French phrase serge de Nîmes ('serge from Nîmes').
    Serge means a ‘sturdy fabric’.
    Here’s the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denim?wprov=sfti1
So, according to this, the CD color “blue de Nîmes “ should be the same with the DL color “denim”, don’t you think?
Lovely video, Natasha, thank you for sharing with us. Hugs from California. 🤗

Thanks for sharing this - that's interesting. :) They should be the same, but are in fact quite different! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video. x

Oh that's great Natasha I love your color videos, but every time I wonder about the meaning of lightfast, does it mean that the color remains stable in the light for long years only, or are there other advantages to this feature? Also, I wonder what is the difference between Lightfast and Lightfastness Thank you for this relaxing video💖

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  Год назад +1

Lightfast and Lightfastness are pretty much different ways of saying the same thing, and it means that the colour will remain stable when exposed to light. There are varying degrees of lightfastness, and if you sell or display your work, it's a good idea to choose materials with a high lightfast rating. :)

I love luminance pencils but they are so very expensive here in Canada. We have prismacolors everywhere out here but I find the quality to be hit or miss sometimes 😕 and I totally get the mind going blank while filming, I know I have thoughts and feelings about the supply in my hand but as soon as I need to say it when the camera is on I go blank or say stupid things that I have to cut out anyway lol
