"Efficiency" and "Productivity" - yes, let's redefine these words for ourselves!!! I'm 53 years old, and realizing just in the last few years, that I have felt RUSHED my whole life long. My nervous system aches and creaks with the neverending expectation of efficiency and productivity, of getting it done and getting it right.
Your words today are like cool water in my body and my spirit. You're speaking to my soul, and I've slowed down enough so I can listen. Thank you ❤️💜💙

I wish someone had told me this when I was 20, in college. I would have saved a lot of time, thinking that I had to just choose one career and I would be successful, that it would make me successful and I would be okay. The shadow thought I would have is: "I just need to find the right path that will lead me to my best life ever"

I think I started thinking about this back when bar codes were first introduced in the grocery stores! (Yeah, I'm old.) Then counting key strokes at your desk and asking to go pee (and being timed) and the cell phone "on call" craziness came to be accepted as normal. We're people, not machines. When nobody cares about us, we can tell.

So my job is a full time in-home caregiver for my grandma (she has dementia and I came here after she had a stroke in 2021). For a month now she's been in outpatient nursing bc she fell and broke her leg. (I still feel terrible that I couldn't stop the fall) anyway, now she's going downhill. And I have a lot to do. Like today I'm trying to deep clean the house and build a wheel chair ramp for when she comes home. Hopefully. This entire month without her has been even longer hours of work, more stress, more crying. And I'm noticing that I can't function anymore with the really long lists and tons of caffiene and trying to get everything done. That is how I've lived for years and years. And I'm realizing now that...I'm coming to the same destination after all that as I would if I woulda just floated. I'm not sure I know how to just...float. I have always effort-ed and forced to get results. At the expense of my body and my peace of mind and rest. So ALL OF THAT TO SAY (lmao) you have no idea how your channel and each and EVERY one of your videos is showing me how to be a different way. And I just want to say I really appreciate you and every video you make.
Love ya fellow space blob. 🥰❤

Through my path of deprogramming the past nine years, it’s been a double sided coin. Some aspects have been easy and liberating, others have been very challenging & quite problematic for my sanity. These things have been occurring at different times also! I’m trying to find ways of being kind, patient and accepting of myself as I suffer with mental health issues; as one of the dominant heavy thought process is self criticism. Plant medicine has been key for my development & reminds me that I am love and loved. 😊🙏🏾🌿

Efficiency in itself is a noble concept as you eluded to in the start. Nature is beautifully efficient because it allocates energy so every part is in harmony with the whole. Where things get tricky is our left brain dominant thinking has corrupted language to the point where most people now conflate efficiency with society's idea of being "productive". Also, we're not reliable judges on what's actually efficient, as the concept of time from our human point of view is so far removed from all that is.

I love your chats, I value these conversations, I feel seen! Nature is efficient. The efficiency that makes us feel like our life force is being drained is certainly NOT, ultimately efficient. That flavor of efficiency treats us like resources to be drained (and tells us we should enjoy it!) I've had these thoughts for sooo long and I'm so happy that these things are being discussed. I'm 53 now, I recall handwritten letters and telephone calls where you didn't know who the caller was. Technology was maybe implied to be a time and labour saver, but now we think we are servants to notifications any time of the day or night. Aagghh, a bit of a rant, but I have feelings about this!! Proud to be a space blob. I adore you!!❤🌻🤸‍♀️💐🌙🦇💙

I’m listening to this chat from my hostel in Mexico, just after someone told me that it was already 11am and that I should be out visiting the city. I find it interesting that this concept of efficiency sneaks in even in the context of traveling, that should be about leisure and individual preferences. I’m someone who likes to go slowly and “feel” places, and I sometimes feel the pressure to “do things”, visit the right stuff, “don’t get stuck in one place” - in short, this was very timely, thanks for another insightful chat, Sarah !

Efficiency has been a word echoing in my mind too these days, so often! Our concious application of time and energy does truly have value beyond measure. Levels of productivity should be managed by and for the individual. It's a matter of personal well-being, not an intention to be measured by social standards. Sometimes being more "selfish" with our time leads us doing less "selfish" things.
    Thanks for sharing, Sarah!
Randomly- you remind me of Marion in Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark, to me that's a good thing!🤩

Thank you Sarah.❤ This is a conversation I've been having with friends and colleagues since we came out of 2 years of lockdowns. It seems society equates effeciency with constant and immediate productivity, when in fact, some of the most creative and productive spaces and ideas come from stillness and settling into what we've already established without the need to constantly move forward. When you dive deeper, it's an industrialised/capitalist notion that we all work in ways that burn us out for the betterment of the 'individual'. When we are able to lean into our village and find spaces for collective stillness and sharing of resources, than we don't need to carry all this efficiency on our own. It's an interesting notion that appeared during 2 years of lockdown in Melbourne...the stillness and time to get off the hamster wheel actually benefitted a whole lot of people. But it appears it's 'business as usual' again. A conversation that needs to be had about shifting gears. Thank you. 🙏

Ironically, the need to be so "efficient" makes us less efficient. we become overwhelmed and then procrastinate more and all because of this constant trauma of needing to do, do, do. We take better care of our machines then we do ourselves. I totally agree with this! thanks again!

Sarah! I will take all the reminders I can get that it's ok to say no. That it's ok to slow down and meander, and not have everything "figured out" all the damn time. Those of us who are sensitive beings are especially vulnerable to the chaos and transformative energies of this particular space and time...and it has been a challenge to say the least to release myself from my own cultural/societal/familial expectations. Of feeling solely responsible for attempting to soothe the wounds of everyone all the time, and the self imposed pressure to anticipate their responses ...I am tired of it too. Learning to integrate the powerful lessons of these past few years and give myself more and more and MORE grace each and every day. I have found out how much more productive I am in fact, in the moments I intentionally allow a bit more space, and time, and flexibility. I am cautiously optimistic that as I let go more and more of my decades long habit of attempting (futile)control, I am lead more and more easily into a sense of peace and trust in this process of life. I still struggle with fear as I continue to break through layer upon layer of the containers I instinctually build...AND I am discovering more and more, that the fear may just be excitement of self actualization and the gift of choosing to be delighted by the gift that is my existence. Of BEing, inspired action, and an open and grateful heart learning to RECIEVE. Thank you Sarah! So much Love to you and those you continue to reach and comfort and inspire on this bananas ride!

I had the recent epiphany that everything I want in life is merely due to programming and comparison. I went deep to figure out what it is I really want and even what I wanted as a child. Guess what I wanted as a child? Nothing! I was so present as a child, I had no urge for more. So now I’m just focused on right now. I don’t need what other’s experience even though I haven’t experienced much. It’s so hard. Everything past this now moment seems unachievable and this would bring me down so hard but now I see that I could not see it working because it was never my goal. It was striving based on comparing myself to someone else’s story.

This resonates so deeply. I love and appreciate how you have been able to question and reframe efficiency in a rebellious way and still show up to hold so much space for an online community in a consistent way for YEARS! It’s made a huge impact on me getting to listen to you over the years and learn from your spirit’s meanderings and the messages you share. I love that you can take it from the well of creativity and not the well of immediacy. I find myself wanting to create and build and share, and I have felt a lot of that internalized socioeconomic pressure to conform to a certain model of efficiency, but I am so happy to rest in the trust of organic growing organically and meandering as my soul desires. This is EXACTLY what I made room for this year by making adjustments and cutting back in my health consulting business. After decades of priding myself on my ability to multi-task, stay busy, be prompt on replies and be a go getter. I was literally just thinking about these things you discussed in the shower about an hour ago. I was marveling over how I didn't have a clue what to do with my new and slower pace of life initially. In fact, I'm still in the space of just choosing NOT. NOT keeping to do lists, NOT feeling pressured, NOT replying to that email, NOT doing things I don't want to (except for basic survival). I'm learning to lean into my stillness even more than I have in recent years, even though I'd already made a big shift there. Now I'm softening into it even more and choosing all the things in life I enjoy and that fill me up. I loved your washing machine analogy! It's so wonderful that you're recognizing this so early in life.

Whether we want to put systems and rules in place to do things efficiently--- there are no shoulds. Love your deep musings, living in the present opens so much more spaciousness and connection also to ourselves. Ive been in this space this year and notice things that emerge and manifest are a lot easier than if i push for something it requires more listening and trust. Theres more ease and joy that comes from a deeper place even if at times it feels questioning thats part of its seeking. Its being in the unknown more too, i love how you talked about the boss babe. Theres a lot of posturing i feel that ties in, which comes from needing to fit in out of insecurity or from ego rather than being authentic. The word bullying jumped out for me! Sensitive souls reclaming their power and living as they like is powerful. Ty once again i enjoy listening to your thoughts with my morning coffee! ❤

As you spoke about efficiency, a word and posture I present to the world, I kept thinking about the related pressure to multitask! I even find myself checking email or text as I go to the bathroom (ok TMI, but I know I’m not the only one). So although I know that multitasking actually lowers one’s IQ, I find myself constantly trying to do more than one thing at a time. BUT when I become conscious of this default efficiency mode, I can integrate and focus on one thing. Thankfully I work for myself so I am able to maintain the pace I want, so I make myself efficient at self care, good nutritious food, playing with my puppy (although not enough.) I also have a new 1 year old baby grandson…if you want to dismantle efficiency and really be in the moment, immerse yourself in their world of discovery and play, where your reward comes from the joy of that beautiful baby smile. Puppies work too. Thanks Sarah for the confirmation that we don’t need to live according to others’ pace!

Thank you for saying what so many of us have been feeling and questioning! For five years, I worked at a company that touted efficiency as one of its core values. What that translated to was expecting employees to always be ready to respond to GChat and email immediately, regardless of what else they were doing in the moment. If I did not reply to a chat within a couple minutes, my boss would call my work and personal phones in succession until I picked up. There are very few (if any) situations in the average working person's workweek that are truly urgent. A certain degree of timeliness is polite; however, we're living in a climate that encourages us to treat everything like life or death.

"Meant to meander" might just be my new motto... I loved your reframing of 'efficiency'. Yesterday I gave myself more grace and space after a time of being away a lot, did 3 yoga nidras throughout the day and the mind chatter around "You're not doing enough / being consistent/ staying on it" came in very I stayed with myself. Then later I felt inspired to write 2/3 of an article, play some music outside and record a music video. I would not have had the energy or inspiration available to do that if I had forced myself to stay in one track mind efficiency mode. It really IS more efficient in terms of my true values (creativity, self expression) to take that pace in a meandering way. Thank you SO much Sarah. I love your messages and will be coming back to this one.

Sarah thank you for this confirmation. I have come this very realization myself over the last two weeks and it just feels so affirming to hear others on this wave length. Thank you for what you share🌸

Sarah!! Thank you thank you for all that you do!!
I have been feeling this so much post university. This is the first time in my life since being a little kid that my life isn’t being dictated by the education system. First time in my life since being under 5 years old that I’m getting to choose engaging deeply and can actually sustain and support that choice. The past few years I have been slowing down, and then slowing down again and then slowing down some MORE. Lol. It’s so amazing to me to reconnect to feelings of calm in my body I haven’t experienced in two decades. To find the nourishment that only exists in those deeper subtle layers. Makes me feel emotional and grateful to get to find these parts of myself again and take good care of them, live my life the way that I want to now. And it’s still a bit of a shock to process the difference. To know I will not be choosing overexertion anymore, that that way of life is not going to be my norm ever again.. powerful thing to sit with.
Love to you all!! Hope everyone is able to feel deeply nourished and find rest and breath 🤍🫀♥️

Efficiency says “take the first idea and run with it
Creativity says, “can we process this? Let’s have lots of ideas, smoosh the best ones together and see if we feel good about what shakes out!”

Once again Sarah you’ve hit the nail on the head. I was contemplating yesterday leaving my current living situation that I felt happy about my decision but I found myself second guessing that decision about what if I had gone with option B. Really appreciate this message and your analysis ❤

I so agree with you Sarah. I fight with this concept all the time. We're so deeply conditioned with it so it really takes focused energy to stop, reflect and to slow down... Thank you for being so present with us❣

Sarah, Dearest. Immediacy, How do we live with it? It's called the principle of the "Next Thing." It is being developed by Stephen Biskup, Portland Oregon. During the Covid Years I would attend Jam Sessions with Stephan. What do we work on NEXT??. there were no gigs coming up, no markets to look for. Taking suggestions from Stephan, Jam session members would follow their intuitive thoughts to fined their next music activity. I ended up finding endless techniques to develop my musicality. I am still doing it today. No one knows what's going to happen until you complete enough of your current activity, to have thoughts and find the NEXT THING. Fun, try it!
