That is quite true, to be entirely honest. To turn something into a meme, you must first become a meme yourself. To fail at something is to be human, but to give up on something is to become a meme. To think of creating a meme, is to immediately become a meme yourself.
As it turns out, he’s not as clueless as he seems. He’s actually performing. He was scripted and directed in this clip. LaBeouf was participating in a video art project called #Introductions for Central Saint Martins, a London arts college. Each student in the class was directed to write a short script for the actor to perform on camera in front of a greenscreen. According to the Guardian, this was the assignment: “Submit a piece of text lasting up to 30 seconds or no more than 100 words. This can be as poetic, abstract or literal as you like - with the emphasis on expressing the feeling and tone of the work being introduced.” LaBeouf wound up performing 36 of the pieces in a single day in a Los Angeles greenscreen studio.
apparently he wrote it satirically making fun of motivational videos and how silly they can sound. He ironically made a really good motivational script for Shia to play off of. Which is part of the whole point of the project but you already know that. Amazing what a good actor can do with nothing more than a script and area to act. @@alcatraz8694
When Shia first put this out on the web, I was on the bandwagon with everyone else. I watched the “just do it” part and had my laughs. I just finished “honeyboy”. Shia is just a guy trying to figure it all out, like the rest of us. We have all had our moments when life beats you down. And we have all had our moments that we would be ashamed for others to see. The difference is, we do see Shia. We have seen Shia since he was a kid. And the media is only interested in the controversy and the mistakes. Most of what we get to see of Shia are his low points. I can’t relate to everything in this video, but there are segments that definitely hit home. I don’t care what anyone else says, this is a beautiful piece.
The one thing i disagree with.. most stuff shared, expressed, commented on... Is that people say stuff like good, positive, beautiful; but, it's also bad, negative, ugly. Reality is not only positive, but also negative... This is why we exist, and this is what makes us healthy. Acceptance of the good and bad, breathe in, and also, breathe out. Eat, and also, poop!
Devon Cho for sure. A lot of what he is saying is negative, probably most of it. The beautiful thing about this video is that you watch a man who is confronting all of his demons. And those of us who can relate to what he is saying, can learn a thing or two about ourselves. Art doesn’t have to be all positive and uplifting to be beautiful. For instance Johnny Cash’s cover of the song “hurt” is all dark and negative, but still very beautiful.
I really admire him. He changes a lot as he finds himself. The person we see is a reflection of who he is inside. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He speaks his truth, he speaks from the heart.
I absolutely love Shia and feel he is misunderstood. He's definitely eccentric but that's fine. This is not some ranting/rambling. It is a performance art piece. He is a part of a 3 person performance art group.
I agree, this is performance art, if you don't see it, you don't see it. But some of us find it beautiful. The first time I watched it i was depressed as hell, but it did lift me up. So if they want to laugh let them, let the rest of us appreciate the art.
Are people seriously commenting on a random post 3 years after the fact? I was commenting on the subject at hand, not anything personal he had/has going on.
If I remember well he was called to be part of an art class or something like that. The students wrote many speeches for him to say and act in front of the camera, so that's why it's so random.

This is really motivational and beautiful in the sense that he's really angry at people for giving up on their dreams. If someone is angry at you because you're not trying hard enough, it means that they love you a lot.
i'm glad there is more to this speech. it give us a more in-depth look at Shia, his likes/dislikes, what he thinks about. You can feel his despair, his rage, his sorrow, but also his unwillingness to give-up, his artistic side/intrigue, etc.

This was a series of monologues written by fine arts students as their final art pieces. "Just Do It" was written by Joshua Parker which he said, "explores the effects that ‘health mania’ is having on contemporary life. So it sounds like it was meant to be a parody on motivational speeches of those industries that we tend to just eat right up. Likewise, each monologue is to portray different meanings. I agree, Shia did a beautiful performance. 🙂

"Seen from a distance, almost everything looks beautiful, as the distance increases, the more we romanticize. All the small details from the everyday reminisces the past, because the things we want to forget are things we can never forget"
(simple research) The artists invited Central Saint Martins BA Fine Art students to submit texts of up to 100 words to introduce their degree show work. These texts were then performed by LaBeouf in front of a green screen, before the footage was returned to the students and simultaneously released to the public under a Creative Commons license.
