Be an educated voter. Do your research and know who you are voting for. I was recently looking up some of the candidates for a local election, one of the candidates is a fairly recent arrival and has apparently not registered to vote in Idaho yet, another who has been in Idaho for many decades is praised as "the right kind of Republican (aka RINO)" by the Spokane newspaper. Both of these candidates have "Conservative" plastered all over their campaign literature but can't show anything "conservative" about their positions.
Take the time, do the research, make sure you know who and what you are voting for. We may disagree, which is fine, but at least you should be able to have a rational and cogent debate about your positions.

I was just out by that particular "range" (unregulated area) and can safely say that it's still a trash can of shotshells and cheap brass. It's also gotten bad on the trails with the proliferation of off-roading toys that people are using to terrorize the NFS roads.
I picked up what I could, which filled the two trash bags I had in my vehicle, but people need to learn how to respect our beautiful state - even those who already live here.

Post Falls is nice (I had a house there) but North Idaho is exploding with out of state nincompoops. They're willing to spend too much money on rundown houses and driving up the cost of housing. They don't know what they're doing either. My neighbor told me his new landlord from California used their home owners insurance to upgrade appliances and were shocked when their rates went up. You cannot buy a house here for less than a quarter million. We're moving out of town the end of August.

Put weight in the back of your car or truck (especially if you have a pickup) for better traction in the winter. I keep weight in the back of my truck year-round, due to how slick the roads can get after some rain, especially when it has not rained in a long time. That is why you will see tube sand for sale at gas stations. As one of those locals I totally agree with your recommendations.

I live just north of Idaho in south-east British Columbia (BC) Canada. This summer here, a vehicle with California licence plates/tags was speeding way over the speed limit on a quiet, curvy, hilly lake-side road, passing other vehicles when un-safe. I don't know if they came via Idaho, but if that is how they drive in California, that isn't the way we drive here, we follow the highway signs. I do NOT want to imply that only Californians or some Americans speed............... Vancouver Canada had SEVERE speeding problems back in the 1980's ........... a sort of "hyped hysteria" gripped the city................ partly driven by the "Liberal sexual revolution" popular in the Western World at that time............ Vancouverites seemed to think that road signs "were irrelevent" or "everything in the social order was to be challenged" as if it was all "illogical". Anyway, right now in BC we have a similar problem Idaho has with some Liberal Ontario people moving here and trying to change the politics and the society, as most of us are moderate conservative everywhere in BC outside of the Pacific Coast around Vancouver. Alberta Province (AB) which is north of Montana is conservative too, except for the city of Edmonton. I like this guy's attitude who makes these videos, I visited Idaho and Montana during the Great Eclipse of 2017 and was very impressed with those states, you are always welcome to visit us here in BC / AB .............in Canada's West....very, very few of us vote for Trudeau !

I lived in Ketchum/Sun Valley for 32 years. I used to love watching horrible driving from visitors of all states.
Three times I saved from hitting deer the third time 4 Elk. I tell people how: Go to a large parking lot and spin around until you see how much traction you really still have. Read the moisture of the road. Glassy? Better stay home. Secondly: leave a LOT of space between you and the next car. Third: Don't (ever) Brake! Well... brake but as soon as your wheels lock you will be swiftly in a Snow Bank.
And four wheel drives get STUCK where four wheel drives get stuck.
I got around just fine with a studded two wheel drive but ... Avoid hills.

I grew up in SW Idaho from the late 50s to the late 70s. I return several times a year and have watched the changes. I understand and deeply appreciate Idaho's proud history of conservatism and self reliance. One great irony about Idaho is farmers' and agribusiness' enthusiastic participation in the federal farm subsidy program since 1933. It was part of Roosevelt's liberal New Deal at the height of the Great Depression. I always considered acceptance of billions in taxpayer-financed subsidy dollars over the decades to be the height of hypocrisy. I worked on farms from age 10 and saw how it played out. I'm not sure it remains the golden goose it was back then. I hope not.

@beadmomma4 @mounty621 I dunno if you don't live in California but still consider yourself a Californian plus you get upset any time someone says something you don't like about Californians, you're provingg my point! If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, well... You see what I'm saying here? Identify as an American and never stick up for Californians or act like one and everyone will love ya !

Weird that friend of mine has lived in Twin Falls since 1990 and told me natives have always hated those from CA. It’s obvious it’s been a thing for a long time.
I personally have been running from Californians taking over parts of the country for just as long. In my experience Idaho isn’t an exception. I grew up in eastern Oregon, then left to Reno in 1986, then Northern Nevada to get away, then to upstate NY to get away, then to Oklahoma to get away. They are now here, and a day doesn’t go by without seeing minimum of 2 CA license plates while driving to work.
It’s time for everyone to just get over it. There’s no way out unless I keep moving. I’m over it. It’s always the same line, ‘“We came for a positive change” and it’s no coincidence the politics make a turn for the worst. Kids are out of control in schools here now, and you can’t discipline without parents raising cane 😳

I grew up in Southern Calif. mountains and also in N. Idaho for awhile. I really understand what this young man is talking about. I saw the same stupidity in both places. We had a little saying in our mountains, that too many people driving up the mountain roads would leave their brains in a box at the bottom of the hill and not pick them up again until they got back to the bottom of the hill. So many horrible accidents caused by idiots . I have quite a list of things that happened to me or in front of me by these terrible drivers. Please do not be one of those people, no matter which State you live in! It is, on the other hand, very hard to be accepted when you move to a new State or just a new community. Our mountain people who were or are long time residents can be insular, so you need patients and a simply friendly, kindhearted personality. If an old timer gives you good advice on surviving in the winters and on the roads, listen carefully! Your life and all near you will have a better chance to survive. Learning the roads very carefully in the good weather and knowing which way the curves are going next will save you when the heavy fog, snow and ice are terrible. Always have blankets and jackets and change of clothes so you can stay over in town when the weather is terrible. Be prepared! 😊

Everyone in these more red areas like Northern Idaho and Montana need to realize that most of us fleeing the city are conservatives or at minimum moderates. If u leave a metro area of 8 million people, and only 10% of us city dwellers are conservatives, thats still 800k.

When I make the mistake of telling someone where I moved from, I get a rash of s*it from them. Sometimes it’s done in humor, and I can take that no problem. Other times it’s not done in humor. I tell them that politically I’m not the norm with where I’m from. Once they get to know me, they find out that I’m one of the most conservative people they know. I do think that most folks here are excepting. I tell them to be friendly to everyone, if they find a new transplant to be a leftist liberal, no need to be mean, but, just make them uncomfortable(wear a sidearm, fly a big American flag ect.), they’ll move……..

I agree with all this, though I would like to tag something to one of Trent's points.
On running for office or other civic involvement as a newbie: I believe we political refugees have something we might bring to the table as advisors or sorts. I don't mean any official capacity but just helping locals protect and defend Idaho from the pitfalls and missteps that our home states and town or cities fell into resulting in them now being the $h!tho!es they are now.
One of my concerns for Idahoans is that by being insulated from much of the problems we are experiencing in blue areas this can result in a false sense of security or a "that ain't ever happening here!" kind of thinking. My home western WA used to be a lot like north Idaho. It didn't really start getting Californicated until the '90s. Even CA was red up until at least the '60s. This can happen anywhere and the only way to prevent it is to recognize the tell tale signs of this gradual and slippery slope. West coast conservatives can help and we desperately want to stronghold Idaho and every other place still salvageable from this possible fate. It may be too late for Seattle but not for CDA, etc..
I agree with not running for office in your first few years somewhere. In fact I would even accept a probation period on voting for my first 3 or 5 years or something. I just think locals should be open to learning from the mistakes of other places by listening to the newbies that came from those places. Assimilation MUST also occur by the new comers of course. I would love to help keep Idaho Idaho.

If you do not belong to their "club" you will be somewhat tolerated, but not welcome. Freethinking is not allowed out here. Best of luck to all of us!

Some simple rules for living here:
    1. Mind your own business.
    2. Keep your hands to yourself.
    3. Don't start none, won't be none.
    4. FA&FO
Democrats, liberals and criminals (but I repeat myself) will find it almost impossible to comply with any one of those, much less all four of them.

Depends on the area from what we have found. There is a charter school in Rathdrum called STEM Academy that has great reviews and good results which my friends who lives up there said was good also. The public schools are a mixed bag, but Idaho is a school choice state so your tax dollars can go to the charter school with your kid.

When it comes to moving to someplace you then complain about... many people move to a place in SPITE of the people, not BECAUSE of the people. Other people and their political views do not dictate where I live, nor should it. Many people want to live somewhere with certain topography or scenery, or climate... and that is the only thing that matters to them, and the poltical persuasions of their neighbors are just a pain in the butt they have to put up with.
