The largest elephants (ex: Henry the elephant, the straight-tusked elephant, the largest mammoth species) often reached 12 tons or even 24 tons. Aside from the giant hornless rhinoceros, proboscideans seem to be just about the only land mammals that match or exceed the largest-known carnivorous dinosaurs in weight and height (not length, though). Maybe there's something about having a pair of big tusks and a huge proboscis that automatically makes an animal really big.

I would love to see an elephant like this in real life. I watched a clip earlier of elephant seals and there was a guy standing next to one. I would never have imagined those seals could be so huge. I think when we watch these animals on TV, it's easy to underestimate just how big they are, life-size. They must be incredible to see in real life.
