Hello Raven ! Thank you for your very interesting series of sites around the world ! Do we have oral tradition of the Dorset people or the First Nations of New Found Land that would fit the arrival of Norse people in the region ?

Canuck paraphernalia duly noted and ADMIRED! And the hair! SO sophisticated! Trying to look like an actual adult instead of a teenager faking it, I see. Will have to see this site someday. Although...even though I live in Canada...it is actually closer to drive to Disneyland AND back than driving to L'anse Aux Meadows. And I'd still have to drive back. (Showing Canadian pride in the vastness of Canada here!:)

    Loving this series!
This location needs to get a lot more love than effing Christopher Columbus!
I hope you get to make a trip home before too long. We're crossing the Pond in the other direction to see UK family for the first time in nearly three years, so can really relate!

A group from my small UK based re-enactment society was invited over to L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS for a couple of weeks as part of its C1000 year celebrations in 2000, I did some dodgy dyeing as part of our living history experience (unlike some folks I am not a natural crafts person:) ) We used to do a bit of living history at West Stow, i was a bad potter there more than once. But telling the legends of the gods like the pagan Norse creation story or Beowulf at West Stow to an audience lit by a flickering fire used to be awesome.

I finally saw this site in 2019 and it was a really great experience. Good guides, really stirring scenery and I like that they make a point to commemorate all the archaeology that's been done on that site - not just the Viking site.

You should concentrate on weighty matters. Leave the simple questions to me. Hair down.
.... I don't want to be overly persnickety, but can a fleece sweatshirt really be considered a sweater?

Since Greenland is part of North America, sharing a land border with Canada, it is fair to say that the earliest Norse settlements in North America were those in Greenland.

    • @EdinburghFive

There is no "land border with Canada".

" By this, Canada and the Danish Realm, through Greenland, will have an international land border of 1,280 m (4,200 ft), which follows a rift, forming a half circle with the westernmost part around the middle, in the surface of the island that runs from north to south near the centre of the island."

@@jeffreyshannon6159 LOL. I had forgotten all about Hans Island. I remember Denmark and Canada had a low level spat about it a number of years ago. Good to see there was a resolution. Given it was Canada and Demark I suspect it was all very amicable.

@@EdinburghFive I would have preferred they had left it unsettled, with perhaps some variation of the Easter Island tangata maru contest where a champion from each country would compete for their nation's sovereignty over the island each year.
