Yellowtail Fishing Tactics in the Florida Keys

  • This week we go after Yellowtail Snapper down in the Florida Keys. The fish weren't biting well so we had to try some other chumming tactics, such as mixing in sand with our chum. This adds a little flavor and makes the water mirky which helps to hide our hooks and lines.
Small hooks we like for Yellowtail:

During the summer we will be hosting live videos on Thursday nights on our RUclips page at 7:45 EST to discuss fishing reports and what's biting in your area as well as tips and tricks to help you for the upcoming weekend of fishing.

Some ideas that might help you. Get yourself a Bruce Claw Anchor and attach the chain to the neck of the anchor then use zip ties to attach it to the end of the shaft. If it gets caught, drive up and pull in as much anchor line as possible then cleat it off to the front (not back) of the boat and slowly drive forward till the zip tie breaks. Also, don’t forget to keep extra zip ties on you. For getting your chum down lower in the water column in strong current, try attaching your chum bag to a small anchor and drop it down on the front of the boat so you’re not dealing with it when you’re bringing fish up. Maybe start it out halfway to the bottom and as you see the fish start to move in, lift up the chum bag 10’ here and there until you have the fish basically at the back of the boat.
    Hope this helps!

you NEED to catch those bar jacks at 5:12 they have a similar taste to yellow jack and they fight very hard, lots of fun. I recommend throwing a goofy jig quill, colored yellow, yes, the quill only right where they are pilled up and just let it sit there and you will hook hundreds of those things. cool vid as well

You gotta soak the oats first! They will expand in the fishes belly and kill them.

My Grandparents use to have a place in Marathon, He would make a bucket up using cheap elbow noodles cooked and chopped corn, the cheapest stuff he could buy and toss the wet slop out in the chum line. He also would throw table scraps in the bucket, shrimp hulls tails, peas, beans etc. We used to catch some good ones.

Where do you guys dock the boat when down there ? Looking for a good place for the new boat. The place I used with my bay boat won't cut it no more as the water is a little too skinny to get in and out.

Your supposed to soak the oats in thawed chum and slop it back....the oats will soak up the chum oils, liquids, smell ect....also you can chum/sand ball with oats. You youngsters have a long way to go in the YT game..
