THE BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE has come under tremendous amounts of criticism. It has been slandered as a 'debt-trap', yet after reading up on it, this doesn't seem to be the case.
Whereas the United States, the United Kingdom and other Imperialist empires have spent their histories bombing and looting other countries, it seems China is yielding influence a little differently.

UK don't even have workers and rely on foreign workers how can they still build infrastructure in Africa. Those old steam trains are even struggling to transport passengers, let alone cargo. That's why the majority of countries use China. It will hopefully also eradicate poverty given those poor countries a chance to enhance their lives with productivity to export their products.

I saw an interview with some African leaders and they all said that China has been investing in their countries for 50 years! This kind of trust and relationship has been fostered for generations. Same with the pushing up the value-added-chain.
BRI, "Made in China 2025" were all China's long term plans coming to fruition.
Xi, with his experience with the Beijing Olympics, was specifically chosen to package and present everything and roll it all out.

In the 1980s and 1990s, propaganda slogans such as “If you want to get rich, build roads first” could be seen everywhere in China. China's political situation is stable and infrastructure investment is crucial to long-term economic growth. In countries that practice voting politics, the ruling party pursues short-term interests to ensure its own approval rating. In my opinion, most people are shortsighted and stupid. If you give him ten cookies (welfare) today, and you can only give him five cookies tomorrow because of the bad economy, they will overthrow the ruling party, which will lead to the rapid decline of the country.
There is an old saying in China: Forefathers planted trees to provide shade for future generations. Therefore, the ruling parties of countries that join the Belt and Road Initiative are indeed doing what is best for their countries. They do not care about short-term gains but consider the long-term future of the country.

Western critics of the BRI are disingenuous. First of all, the IMF, World Bank and other Western investors have lent far more money to these same developing countries. Why aren't these also "debt traps?"
In the eleven years since the BRI began, China has never seized any nation's assets. So where is this debt trap paranoia coming from?
Second, some countries participating in the BRI have run into difficulties. This is not surprising. A project on the scale of the BRI is bound to have some problems. However, on the whole, the BRI has been a resounding success.
Third, if the BRI is such a bad idea, why did Western countries try to emulate the BRI with Build Back Better and Global Gateway? This is unbelievable hypocrisy.

The West's propaganda has always been very good. In many statements including your own, there is a presumption of good in the West's statements. Remember they are the traditional colonial powers. Colonialism + Imperialism = mass murder, mass theft, mass rape, enslavement and carefully structured economic systems to drain wealth from the rest of the world to them (ex: $45 trillion stolen from India by the British). Yes, today's West is not as bad as the West a hundred years ago but they do their best to perpetuate an economic colonial system. So it's the former/current muders, thieves, slavers, etc... calling China the same thing as a tactic to try and discredit them. Thank God, people remember their histories.

Harvey, Your analysis and summation of the BRI is spot on and refreshingly free of the vitriol and misinformation spewing from the Western mainstream media. Over the last 10 years, roughly 1100 projects have been completed most of which have been successful. On the other hand there have been some that have not met expectations, but one has to understand that many of the emerging countries have internal issues complicating the execution of such projects. By and large, the BRI has been successful which is supported by the fact that over 150 countries are paricipants. Italy and the Phillipines have been the ONLY exceptions who have exited the BRI at the bidding of the US, irrespective of the fact that several beneficial projects were disrupted at the expense of the Phillipines. The son of Ferdinand Marcos follows in his father's duplicitous footsteps.
