    This was a great first episode, It's really insightful and I appreciated the way you started this series by explaining the mindset of the Japanese people of the era and how they came to have that also.

      It sure seems like it even just at the end of episode one! Could you perhaps point me to any other channels or even just videos that deal with similar topics? Videos like this one or even channels like Zeta Rise for example.

      +ElectronicControl3R well, I only really know of my own series right this second, but there are retrospectives on power rangers and one piece that i know of

    • @ElectronicControl3R
      @ElectronicControl3R 8 лет назад

      The power rangers one would certainly be interesting to me, I unfortunately never got to interested in one piece.
      Also if you have never heard of the channel Zeta Rise id would highly suggest it, he has some seriously detailed gundam videos.

    Tank Tankuro.
    Also that Shonen Club story from during the war with a robot Kraken fighting the US Navy.
    (Also the express train from Kansai International to Osaka looks like Tetsujin 28)

    The word "robot" does not come from a word slave, it was actually based on an archaic word meaning "to do work" or "worker", usually in the context of physical labor like mining.

    • @ProfessorOtakuD2
      @ProfessorOtakuD2  5 лет назад

      The word "Robota" is translated most readily as "Forced Labour" which has the context of slavery in English.

    • @Scaevola9449
      @Scaevola9449 5 лет назад

      @@ProfessorOtakuD2 I'm a native speaker, it's just an archaic word for labor.

    • @ProfessorOtakuD2
      @ProfessorOtakuD2  5 лет назад

      Take it up with the people translated the books I read then, because they said 'forced labor' and 'slave' interchangeably when talking about it.

    • @Scaevola9449
      @Scaevola9449 5 лет назад

      @@ProfessorOtakuD2 Both Czech and Slovak have a somewhat rocky history with translations, especially with wordings and grammar, so it makes sense.
      "Robotovať", the noun form of "robota", was used within a physical labour context often associated to feudal serfdom, which could be why it has an association to slavery, since being a serf is basically being a slave.

    • @ProfessorOtakuD2
      @ProfessorOtakuD2  5 лет назад

    And nothing about the American novel Starship Troopers which came out on November 5, 1959, by Robert A. Heinlein, which showed the Military group piloting Mobile suits our power armor the flight bugs.

      I know what Starship Troopers is, thanks. Its not necessary to this narrative, because this is about a country's relationship with technology.

    Assistance please: I remember a show from my childhood that was 3 robots that formed 1 mecha, but could change up the way they came together. I viewed all your videos and either missed it or saw no mention of it. If you know what it is please let me know

    Just a thought for future videos: Would it be alright if you linked to your sources in the description? A lot of people like to do the fact-checking themselves, and it's always interesting to see just how much research went into this video.

    • @ProfessorOtakuD2

      Epic Ebi A lot of this is based on class notes I took while at Uni so it'd be kind of useless to do that, combined with wikipedia for timeline accuracy. So its a bit moot.I'll see what I can come up with.

    I think the first Japanese mecha in history could also be that robot Ogon bat fought in the 1930's Kamishibai. www.interestingtimespodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Golden_Bat_Giant_Robot.jpg

    I think you're overstating Russia's prestige at the time of the Russo-Japanese war. If the war had happened before the Crimean war, yeah, that's when Russia had all the street cred. But by the Russo-Japanese war, Russia was regarded as pretty backwards.

    • @ProfessorOtakuD2
      @ProfessorOtakuD2  9 лет назад +1

      DarthBobCat Well yes, most of Europe thought of the Russians as brutal asiatics, but they were still a massive powerhouse even without the prestige at the time. The point of that was to show just how huge it was that a nation went from zero to beating up long-standing empires.
