Pretty on board with this list, The Exorcist really is one of the best Horror movies ever made, you just feel so much for this family, the single mom trying her best to find out what's going on with her daughter, even going so far as to call on the church when she's an atheist shows you how desperate her plight is. The acting, directing, cinematography, editing, sound, it's all so above most other horror movies, it's really a marvel to behold. People here saying it's not that scary need to actually watch it, not while you're texting or watching it on your phone or computer screen. This movie needs to be watched the way any other great film, in a dark room, phones off and be immersed in it, give it your uninterrupted attention. Then you start to think: What is the demon saying? What is its purpose? What lead to this happening to this family? What is it saying about the early 70's? What does it say about faith and spirituality? Is there a positive spiritual message, and if so why don't most people see it? A lot to be discussed for sure, not just pea soup.

Lachlan W Yes, well, I agree with you, but slasher films, esp in the 80s, killed a lot of of the horror genre as far as I'm concerned...but I'm sure you know of Dario Argento, who made murder a work of art, a blood lust...I have personally HATED the Friday the 13th series, and have considered most exploitation. Unfortunately my fav director Bob Clark and his son were killed by an illegal immigrant like 11 yrs ago, but he was the forefront in everything changing, actually ahead of his time...RIP Bob.
BC is prob in my top 5 horrors of all time. The low budget 70s look, actors that looked like real people, the fact that we don't know why any of this was happening...all ingredients for a great horror.

Last House on the Left? You really missed that? I'm not even a big Wes Craven fan but there's no denying that it is a brilliant (and by brilliant I mean absurdly disturbing) piece of work on the death of hippy culture, Manson, and on media coverage on the Vietnam War
and I've just been reminded that YOU MISSED ERASERHEAD! and Shivers. Jesus I know it was a good decade for horror and u guys crammed a lot of gems in, but the debuts of Cronenberg and Lynch are hugely important in cinema and particularly in horror cinema. They should've both made the list
Joe Clift I agree this decade had lots of good horror movies. "Tourist trap", "I spit on your grave" and "Don't look now" were just a few who should be at least in the Honorable mentions.
My top 5 list 5: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1978) 4: Invadors of the body snatchers 3: The hills have eyes (1977) 2: The Exorcist (1973) 1: Halloween (1978-2009)
The 70s was the best decade for horror. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my personal favourite but why the hell was Last House On The Left not here????? and as much as I love Jaws, I wouldn't class it as horror

The 70’s was such a unique period in horror. Some of my favorites came from it, especially my absolute favorite in Halloween, as well as Texas Chainsaw

will Thomas It’s dubbed over that’s why. Not all dialogue got transferred correctly. They change the dialogue in dubbing so the lips moving match the words more.
I love the grainy atmosphetic horror/psychological thrillers of the 1970s......my top 5 in this classic decade.........1. The Exorcist. 2. Don't Look now. 3.The Omen 4. The Wicker Man 5. Texas chainsaw massacre
I never liked Argento's movies! So, I would put "The Amityville Horror" instead of "Suspiria". But pretty good list in overall! 10)- The Hill Have Eyes 09)- Carrie 08)- Dawn of the Dead 07)- The Amityville Horror 06)- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 05)- The Omen 04)- The Exorcist 03)- Jaws 02)- Halloween 01)- Alien
To me this was the best decade ever of the 1970s like man if I saw one of these movies for the first time. I would be terrified and go in to shock. This is what I call real horror in my book.
Texas chainsaw massacre made my fucking bones chill. so much dread watching that. never felt so terrified of other humans. side note: fuck the remakes. the original is more scarier by far.
My brother took me to see Dawn of the Dead when it first came out. I was only 10! We loved it so much that we went home, grabbed our other two brothers and went to see it again with them!
Pretty good list. I would have liked to have seen "Don't Look Now" on the list, or at least in the honorable mentions section. A solid film with an incredible ending.
I'm not watching this video until someone gives me every time stamp that shows the Exorcist. Like MassOreoKiller, that bitch scars me for life ever since I saw "SCARY GHOST CAUGHT ON VIDEO" prank videos.
David Lozano There were numerous ones but one (which was taken down I think) has a green tinted room with a white rocking chair and for a split second you can see a figure run up to the screen and BOOM heart attack.
***** I saw that one when I was a kid... although my friend told me it was going to happen, he just wanted to show me... I already saw the dang maze game.
My personal favorite decade of horror films! I personally would have put the Omen a few spots lower (I think Jaws and Alien are much better) but other than that a really good list!
Really happy to see Halloween in the Top 2 :) That's easily my favorite horror movie because it's impressive how that much terror, suspense and story can be made on that budget. I make sure to watch it every year for Halloween! :D Too bad the sequels never held up (the only ones I actually like are Halloween II (1981) and Halloween H20)
I wasn't scared watching The Exorcist or later that night but for the next six months or more I was creeped out every night thinking about it. A super movie that really plays on the irrational fears in the dark recesses of the mind.
AAWIL is my favourite film og all time but when you say 80s, there are better horror films that child's play and Friday the 13th. The Shining, Evil dead and who can forget the thing
#10 scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. I didn't sleep for days because of that movie LOL. It's still a great remake of a already classic movie.
Halloween should've been number one. The original 1979 audience reaction from the theatre should've been proof that it was, not if, one of the best horror movies of that time.
Absolutely not. I'm sure you weren't around in 1973 but the effect the Exorcist had on audiences was legendary. People getting sick, fainting, praying...in the theater. Nothing like it before or since.
Flying To Learn What are you talking about? I watched Halloween last night and it was amazing and creepy af. There was a lot of tension the whole film and I loved how it didn’t rely on dumb jumpscares or gore to try to scare the audience. Michael appearing in random places stalking his victims gave me chills, it was much creepier than any other movie from the last 15 years, this is actually my favorite horror film!
My Top 10 (I do not consider Jaws or The Wicker Man horror): 10. Black Christmas (1974) 9. Carrie (1976) 8. Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) 7. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) 6. Suspiria (1977) 5. Dawn of the Dead (1978) 4. Halloween (1978) 3. Alien (1979) 2. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) 1. The Exorcist (1973)
Same. My top 3 for a list like that would've been something like Texas Chainsaw Massacre at #3, #2 Alien and #1 The Exorcist. Although if you ask me, Alien is always #1.
I remember I saw "Aliens" first as a kid, then watched "Alien" later in my "tweens" ... wow, that scene with Harry Dean Stanton in the dark room with all the chains swinging around -- that was so terrifying. Later my older brother patiently explained to me that "Aliens" was more of an action movie while "Alien" was a horror movie, and that was why they were so different ... (love them both, though)
"Phantasm" owes an important debt to "Burnt Offerings", 3 years earlier. "...Offerings" was the first film to use Dunsmuir House in Oakland, Ca. as a movie set. "Phantasm" & various other productions have used it in the decades since.
*My top 10 horror movies in order From 1970 to 1980 are as follows* 10-Halloween Pt.2 09-The Fog 08-FridayThe13th Pt.1 07-Halloween Pt.1 06-Carrie 05-Jaws 04-TexasChainsawMassacre 03-Tourist Trap 02-The Shining 01-The Exorcist
I hadn't watched Alien until just recently. I have never been a big fan of the space exploration genre. I was surprised by just how damn good of a horror movie it was. It has a very bleak sense of loneliness mixed with utter terror. Something the sequels completely failed to replicate.
Personally, I choose THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) not only as the best horror film of the 1970's, but also My Top Favorite Horror Film of All Time and in my Top Ten Favorite Films of All Time. No aliens, no supernatural/paranormal elements, a story inspired by a true case that also fooled everyone into thinking that what happened as depicted as real, with a seamless blend of documentary and narrative rivaled only by THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS, and with human cannibals being the most terrifying of monsters that include a giant who wears masks made from human faces and carries the ultimate killing tool - how can you resist this masterpiece?! But ALIEN, DAWN OF THE DEAD, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and SUSPIRIA are not far behind in my Top 100 Favorite Films, and other horror favorites of mine that didn't make my Top 100 include MARTIN, BLACK CHRISTMAS, THE HILLS HAVE EYES, SHIVERS (aka THEY CAME FROM WITHIN), IT'S ALIVE, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, THE BROOD, THE WICKER MAN, PHANTASM, THE CRAZIES, and THE FURY, making the 1970's, in my opinion, not only the best decade in horror cinema, but all cinema in general. The 1980's would pick up on more of the same, but the disco decade 1970's is still on top! Way to go, '70's!
honestly I disagree with #1 Texas Chainsaw should have been #2 and Halloween #1. I normally agree or enjoy the show but this time i had to give my opinion
Supreme Lord of the Dark World Halloween was also a psychological horror movie imo. Most of the film was Michael stalking his victims and creating tension and paranoia the whole movie, he was so damn creepy.
Black Christmas should have been included on the list . Not just in the honourable mentions . For me , that movie is one the best horror movies ever made si far with a very shocking ending . So underrated . I'm still freaked out after watching it for so many times !
Will Sutton I honestly think Alien should have ranked above Halloween. I mean, I was only saying it was my number one of all time, but I think Halloween had more of an impact because it is an easyer film to make.
Karen Fahel Yes, well, each to their own. Alien is a slower film by today's standards. Technically one could classify it as a thriller so it may not belong at all.
I've seen many horror movies but none of them actually came close to make me flinch. However, when I watched Alien, I said to myself "This is the best horror film I've seen in years that actually frightened me"
I own every one of these films. They are all so good. The 1980's has to have Friday the 13th, The Shining, The Thing, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, American Werewolf in London, The Evil Dead, and Poltergeist....I can think of others to complete the list or get honorable mentions like Cannibal Holocaust, Fright Night, Cujo, The Fly, Return of the Living Dead, The Howling, Altered States, Child's Play, etc.....but can't think of what would definitively round out the Top 10.
The 1970's was a renaissance in horror. Horror left behind the black-and-white classic monsters of ghosts and goblins you wear on Halloween, in favor for more darker and realistic elements such as psychopathic killers in masks, demonic possessions, killer aliens creatures, telekinetic outcasts, and a zombie apocalypse. Creating exploitation horror and slasher flicks. Despite the low budget and a cast of unknown actors, they redefined horror for generations to come.
Also, most of the sequel of all of these movie are not even hold a light to the original. Except Alien. Aliens is a great sequel to the first one. Alien 3 is the disaster though......
"Burnt Offerings" needed to be included on the list Also, no '70s horror film list is complete without Pamela Franklin ("Necromancy", "The Legend Of Hell House").
Linda Blair had to be believable for _The Exorcist_ to work and she NAILED IT! She should have been a major start after such an amazing, multilayered performance...
It shouldn't have. Alien is better. Hell, Jaws is better. And frankly, I don't even know if it would be on my list of scariest movies of the 70's, and I haven't even seen 10 horror movies from the 70's.

Dylan Roberts Call it whatever you want.
PJ Maher right I don't consider jaws a horror movie since I'm not a kid anymore lmao
the 70's...the best decade for horror.
The Exorcist is truly a masterpiece! amazing film that still retains it's power after all these years, incredible film making.
The 70’s was such a unique period in horror. Some of my favorites came from it, especially my absolute favorite in Halloween, as well as Texas Chainsaw
I first saw Halloween as a teenager, that theme still sends a chill down my spine.
Salem's Lot required a night light for about 2 years after as a teenager. Never been so scared in my life.
What about "Don't Look Now". Deserves honorable mention at least.
Denis Sedovlasov of course
In my opinion it should be number 2 behind the exorcist, brilliantly written and it's so eerily atmospheric and unsettling....few horrors can match
DLN is phenomenal!
the 70s didn’t get many things right, but it was certainly a great decade for horror.

10. The Baby
9. Jaws
8. The hills have eyes
7. I spit on your grave
6. A bay of blood
5. Halloween
4. Tourist Trap
3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
2. Carrie
1. Black Christmas
Looking back. The 70s was a great decade for cinema, can't wait for the top ten 80s. I think you may struggle for 90s and 00s.
The 70s was one of the best decades for horror movies. I own almost all these movies for DVD. These movies beats most of today's horror movies.
My top 10
10.Phantasm
9.The Tenant
8.Carrie
7.Halloween
6.Texas Chainsaw Massacre
5.The Omen
4.Suspiria
3.The Exorcist
2.Jaws
1.Alien
Honorable mentions : Tourist Trap and Alice Sweet Alice
I prefer Suspiria over every other on this list. It aged much better than most of the others.
AngusMilneVids Suspiria is kinda overrated tho. It has nice visuals and a good sound score, but the plot is iffy and the dialogue is subpar.
will Thomas It’s dubbed over that’s why. Not all dialogue got transferred correctly. They change the dialogue in dubbing so the lips moving match the words more.
It is visually amazing. I loved it.
Every single movie here is an absolute classic. Even the honourable mentions
So glad Suspiria was acknowledged here! Such great horror cinematography and gory scares!
First famous killer is Leatherface, then Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Pinhead, Chucky, Candyman, Ghostface, and Jigsaw... DAAMN!
I love the grainy atmosphetic horror/psychological thrillers of the 1970s......my top 5 in this classic decade.........1. The Exorcist. 2. Don't Look now. 3.The Omen 4. The Wicker Man 5. Texas chainsaw massacre
Chris Evans Yeah completley agree. Great choices.
#1 Halloween
I never liked Argento's movies! So, I would put "The Amityville Horror" instead of "Suspiria". But pretty good list in overall!
10)- The Hill Have Eyes
09)- Carrie
08)- Dawn of the Dead
07)- The Amityville Horror
06)- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
05)- The Omen
04)- The Exorcist
03)- Jaws
02)- Halloween
01)- Alien
Excellent List!
I would also add in honorable mentions:-
- The Last House on the left
- Don't torture a duckling
Alien and Jaws are a couple of my favourites, glad to see they made the list.
The best decade for horror
The Exorcist, the movie that kept me up at night when I was a child. It's still my favorite movie.
To me this was the best decade ever of the 1970s like man if I saw one of these movies for the first time. I would be terrified and go in to shock. This is what I call real horror in my book.
Texas chainsaw massacre made my fucking bones chill. so much dread watching that. never felt so terrified of other humans.
side note: fuck the remakes. the original is more scarier by far.
omit the more*
***** eh
Great list. Tobe Hooper's Salems Lot deserves a mention though.
Yes, but probably no because it was a TV movie.
I'm glad Black Christmas and The Tennant got honorable mentions. Those are good!
How the hills have eyes never made it on this list is beyond me.
I'm not watching this video until someone gives me every time stamp that shows the Exorcist. Like MassOreoKiller, that bitch scars me for life ever since I saw "SCARY GHOST CAUGHT ON VIDEO" prank videos.
Omg I remember that exact video too
David Lozano There were numerous ones but one (which was taken down I think) has a green tinted room with a white rocking chair and for a split second you can see a figure run up to the screen and BOOM heart attack.
what are y'all talking about , i see these comments about missoreokiller everywhere but I'm too scared to look it up , I'm wondering if i should ?????
***** now I'm just more curious , FUCK
The old Halloween sequels are better than Halloween kills and ends imo
the exorcist nothing beats it. even today..it's still theBEST horror film of all time.
I wasn't scared watching The Exorcist or later that night but for the next six months or more I was creeped out every night thinking about it. A super movie that really plays on the irrational fears in the dark recesses of the mind.
+effinty2112 It's even more horrifying for those who are religious.
Tbh it aged very badly.
In the 1980 episode we need:
Child's play
Friday the 13th
An american werewolf in london
Evil Dead, the Thing, Evil dead 2, the Howling, the gremlins
Omg indeed i totaly forgot evil dead
The shining
AAWIL is my favourite film og all time but when you say 80s, there are better horror films that child's play and Friday the 13th. The Shining, Evil dead and who can forget the thing
AAWIL is my favorite 2
#10 scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.
I didn't sleep for days because of that movie LOL.
It's still a great remake of a already classic movie.
Halloween should've been number one. The original 1979 audience reaction from the theatre should've been proof that it was, not if, one of the best horror movies of that time.
You say it exactly. 'Original 1979 audience reaction'. Times have changed. There's scarier movies.
Absolutely not. I'm sure you weren't around in 1973 but the effect the Exorcist had on audiences was legendary. People getting sick, fainting, praying...in the theater. Nothing like it before or since.
thatdopegirl j
pup lover The Chestburster scene in "Alien" comes a close second.
My Top 10 (I do not consider Jaws or The Wicker Man horror):
10. Black Christmas (1974)
9. Carrie (1976)
8. Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)
7. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
6. Suspiria (1977)
5. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
4. Halloween (1978)
3. Alien (1979)
2. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
1. The Exorcist (1973)
So many classics. Unfortunately many have them have been remade in recent years and they just don't match up
No way, Halloween is the best.
Yep
Agreed
Screw you, you filthy animal
Roller Coaster ikr
Halloween #1
What the hell, Alien is just #5?!!!
i would have placed alien higher on the list
Same. My top 3 for a list like that would've been something like Texas Chainsaw Massacre at #3, #2 Alien and #1 The Exorcist. Although if you ask me, Alien is always #1.
suspiria is one of my favorite horror movies
It's in my top 10 as well, very elegant and unique film in the genre. It mixes horror and art very well.
I agree. Alien is easily one of the Top 3 Horror Movies of the 70's and of all time. It definitely should've been higher.
Phantasm doesn't even get an honorable mention? That's the best horror movie of the 70's in my opinion.
+Robert Paul Gass Your so right love Phantasm!!
"Phantasm" owes an important
debt to "Burnt Offerings",
3 years earlier.
"...Offerings" was the first film
to use Dunsmuir House
in Oakland, Ca. as a movie set. "Phantasm"
& various other productions
have used it in the decades since.
*My top 10 horror movies in order From 1970 to 1980 are as follows*
10-Halloween Pt.2
09-The Fog
08-FridayThe13th Pt.1
07-Halloween Pt.1
06-Carrie
05-Jaws
04-TexasChainsawMassacre
03-Tourist Trap
02-The Shining
01-The Exorcist
Halloween is the best horror movie of all time, so therefore it should be #1
My top 5 favorite horror movies of the 1970s
1. The Exorcist
2. Alien
3. Halloween
4. The Omen
5. Carrie
I hadn't watched Alien until just recently. I have never been a big fan of the space exploration genre. I was surprised by just how damn good of a horror movie it was. It has a very bleak sense of loneliness mixed with utter terror. Something the sequels completely failed to replicate.
I've been waiting for these lists! I love new horror movies way better than old ones. Can't wait for top 10 horror movies of the 2000s
The scary thing about The exorcist and TCM are that they were based on true events.
Brian De Palma’s Sisters (1973) is REQUIRED VIEWING. It should be on this list. It is one of my all-time favorites.
Great list! The 70's were a nonstop orgasim of perfect horror films. Thank you watch mojo! 😃
I normally agree or enjoy the show but this time i had to give my opinion
agreed
ikr
Axl Foley Both Texas chainsaw massacre and Halloween changed the face of Horror and might be the two best slasher movies ever made.
Slasher movies aren't as good as psychological horror movies
Supreme Lord of the Dark World Halloween was also a psychological horror movie imo. Most of the film was Michael stalking his victims and creating tension and paranoia the whole movie, he was so damn creepy.
Black Christmas should have been included on the list . Not just in the honourable mentions . For me , that movie is one the best horror movies ever made si far with a very shocking ending . So underrated . I'm still freaked out after watching it for so many times !
I think we all knew what first two would be :)
Btw awesome list,70s had really great horror movies.
Good list. Halloween is legendary, but The Exorcist...the scariest movie I've ever seen. A masterpiece.
Alien is still my number one of all time
Same here
Everyone has a different opinion, I disagree but I see your point
Will Sutton I honestly think Alien should have ranked above Halloween. I mean, I was only saying it was my number one of all time, but I think Halloween had more of an impact because it is an easyer film to make.
I didn't like "Alien", but I will NOT deny its spot in this list. I'm opinionated, but not stupid.
Karen Fahel Yes, well, each to their own. Alien is a slower film by today's standards. Technically one could classify it as a thriller so it may not belong at all.
The exorcist is one of the best faithful religious movies, best horror movie of all time and one of the best movies of all time
Absolutely!
Alien should've been No.1, it's a perfect organism.
I've seen many horror movies but none of them actually came close to make me flinch. However, when I watched Alien, I said to myself "This is the best horror film I've seen in years that actually frightened me"
Don't look Now?
I own every one of these films. They are all so good. The 1980's has to have Friday the 13th, The Shining, The Thing, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, American Werewolf in London, The Evil Dead, and Poltergeist....I can think of others to complete the list or get honorable mentions like Cannibal Holocaust, Fright Night, Cujo, The Fly, Return of the Living Dead, The Howling, Altered States, Child's Play, etc.....but can't think of what would definitively round out the Top 10.
You know the 70's were a good time for horror movies when Texas chainsaw massacre and Alien place 5 and 6 on a top ten list!
The exorcist is not only the scariest movie of all time, but also had the best story.
Glad to see Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Dawn of the Dead in here - both are genius films ☺
Despite the low budget and a cast of unknown actors, they redefined horror for generations to come.
my top 3
#3: Jaws
#2: Halloween
#1: Alien
I adore Alien too
This is pretty much a complete list of the best in 70s horror. About the only suggestion I can add would be "Burnt Offerings (1976)".
Classic era of Horror movies!! It's funny/sad how almost of these have been remade and don't even hold a light to the original!!
Also, most of the sequel of all of these movie are not even hold a light to the original. Except Alien. Aliens is a great sequel to the first one. Alien 3 is the disaster though......
These are all classic movies! They are not to be remade, except for HALLOWEEN..... That one is pretty good!!!!!
The Amityville Horror is underrated imo. It's a gem of a movie and one of my favourites!
"Burnt Offerings" needed
to be included on the list
Also, no '70s horror film list
is complete without Pamela Franklin
("Necromancy",
"The Legend Of Hell House").
Linda Blair had to be believable for _The Exorcist_ to work and she NAILED IT! She should have been a major start after such an amazing, multilayered performance...
Oh Yes!! The Exorcist Takes the Top Pick HELL YEAH!!
Not really a lot of suspense there.
legofreak446
That film isn't scary, it's just disgusting and poorly made.
It shouldn't have. Alien is better. Hell, Jaws is better. And frankly, I don't even know if it would be on my list of scariest movies of the 70's, and I haven't even seen 10 horror movies from the 70's.
Phuckaducker you were poorly made by your mother
Deep Red (1975) and Suspiria (1977) are my favorite horror films and they're both in the 70s
