If you found this comment, try this. Open Android Auto, Settings, Scroll to version and tap until popup developer mode. Press three dot on upper right and start server or something similar like that. Then hotspot your phone to car. Open headunit reloaded then wifi. Now you can use with internet.
Do you still have to do the steps in the video download wifi launcher do the hotspot from the head unit etc etc so would this allow other apps that are on the head unit connect to the phones Internet? While andriod auto wireless using headunit reloaded is still connected?
You might want to explain at the beginning (and in the vid subject name) that you are using a non-car manufacturer head unit to do this!! Most people do not replace their infotainment units with 3rd party units making this video useless to 99% of us!
@@cozza819 it is not about what is way better. Android auto is dumbed out for safety reasons. You are only suppose to use driving related apps and not youtube or video players.

Usually at least 20-30 seconds. That is not acceptable for head units that, for instance, need to display a backup camera image as soon as you engage reverse. I wonder why there is literally just one affordable (sub 200$) AA/Carplay head unit in the market. That is the Atoto SA102 starter

I feel like by the time you do all this and get it working and then dealing with the battery drain you will get on the phone you might as well just plug the phone into the headunit.
My head unit has built in android audio via USB only, this is a great alternative atleast for me because I get "slow charging" when I connect directly by USB. This way I can use my fast charger and connect wirelessly.

These other people must not do any programing or trying to make their cheap units better. Now if i could figure out how to get the Sub out rca to work all would be great in the world. I had the same issue, go into your settings, connections-data usage, click on mobile data only apps. Select the ones you wish to use with AA. Worked for me.

This is exactly the same problem I've run into. Doesn't seem like there's much of a point in running Android Auto if you can't access the internet. Your maps won't even work properly.
You can enable Smart Network Switch/switch to mobile data in the wi-fi settings. It will allow you to use the mobile data should internet be unavailable on wi-fi
Maps will load to your HU and the connection will be coming from your phone at it is connected via Android Auto. Only apps / features in Android Auto will have an internet connection. The rest of the apps on your phone OUTSIDE Android Auto won't get internet connection UNLESS your HU is connected to 4G/LTE.

How do you open Android Auto on your phone? It's not in my app drawer, the only way I can see that it's even installed is by going to the play store (which has no option to open it).
Other than the cool factor, and actually having the ability to do this, the only question I really have is why go through this trouble? I'm getting a car next week sometime with AA, but I don't see a perk to this in any regard beyond a cool factor? On your phone, you'd be running wireless which drains the phone battery faster just your 3/4/5G network, you're reliant on your cars wifi hotspot for internet access, which means you're paying two bills for the internet. If you plug your phone into the car, then you're on your phones cell network, and you're charging your phone at the same time. I'm not trying to sound like a Vulcan, but this just activity just doesn't seem logical, really. Even for short hauls.

Open Android Auto on your phone, then go to Settings, then tap the 3 dots on the upper right of your screen, tap Developer Settings, then set Day/Night. If you can't see Developer Settings on your Android Auto. Go to Settings -> About -> Tap "Version" 10 times to activate Developer Settings.
I tried this on my aftermarket headunit a few days ago and after fooling around with it for about 15 mins I figured it out and its working fine now. In my case HUR is usually running as an open app when I start the car so my phone auto connects which is a plus.
@@alejandroperez5368 When it auto connects its usually within 5-10 seconds of starting the radio. The way I wired my radio it doesn't cold boot, so when I turn it on the launcher comes right on and is on the home screen.
@@alejandroperez5368 No, I installed a switch in the trim and ran constant power to the head unit that way. Whether the key is in or out I can power the head unit on & off from th he switch. Haven't had any issues yet.
@@EvolutionArtsllc first of all, I don't understand why you would need a dedicated switch for that. You only had to directly power it from 12V and use the head unit's power button to turn it on and off. But there's probably something I don't know in the equation! Also, if it's not fully off, how does it not drain the battery?! Does it enter a sleep mode or low power mode when using that switch? Which cable is the one you're actually switching ?

When Android Auto comes up on my head unit, it freezes. I can't get anything on the map to respond to the touches. I redid all of the steps several times with no luck. Any suggestions?
Are you using two cables? If you’re using a cable that is only used for charging (no data) then it’s just a charging cable. But if you’re charging cable has data on it, meaning to say it can also be used to connect to your computer, then it’s a data cable. So yes, data and charging cable (only) are different. For this one, you need a data cable to connect to Android Auto.
every time that my phone connects to the radio it says "internet on your phone might not be available" the phone reconices that is connected to a wifi so it stops getting data from my phone services provider and it tries to get the data from the wifi so i have to disconnect the phone from android auto in order to have internet back in my phone. how can we fix this issue?

So android auto does not work via Bluetooth? Does it only work via USB cable?
right now it uses a combination of wifi & bluetooth. I believe you will need bluetooth connected in order to use AA.

I can connect but it tells me offline because being connected to an offline browser it has no connection, how do I connect?
When Android Auto comes up on my head unit, it freezes. I can't get anything on the map to respond to the touches. I redid all of the steps several times with no luck. Any suggestions?

Usb cable and charge cable its different?
Are you using two cables? If you’re using a cable that is only used for charging (no data) then it’s just a charging cable. But if you’re charging cable has data on it, meaning to say it can also be used to connect to your computer, then it’s a data cable. So yes, data and charging cable (only) are different. For this one, you need a data cable to connect to Android Auto.
every time that my phone connects to the radio it says "internet on your phone might not be available" the phone reconices that is connected to a wifi so it stops getting data from my phone services provider and it tries to get the data from the wifi so i have to disconnect the phone from android auto in order to have internet back in my phone. how can we fix this issue?
