Great video and information . Just moved to the Boone area from Texas last year and have never done any fly fishing before for trout. Can’t wait to get into trying this.

I went trout fishing today at a pond, I’ve been fishing for years and I thought I knew how to handle trout but I looked up this video after I went and turns out I don’t know how, I held them with the palm of my hand on the top and my fingers on the bottom I also learned today that your supposed to wet your hands before handling them I did it once then forgot to with the other 2 I caught, I want to go back to pond and still catch fish so I will try to remember to always wet my hand and always remember to hold them properly.

Whenever I catch trout I try to handle it as the video shows, but, most times the trout is floppy and won't stop moving and sometimes ends up jeopardizing its own safety no matter how hard I try, any tips?

This is true, sometimes the trout can injure itself when trying to take the hook out. A lot of times I will try and keep the trout in my rubber net while I remove the hook. If he starts rolling I simply remove the pliers quickly and drop it into the net.

A demonstration would be nice. Also no explanation if the fish swallows a hook.

Thank you so very much for the informative video. I am of the opinion if you don't want to eat the fish, don't catch it for your silly "grip and grin" photo. Gads I hate it when everyone that has a freezer full still goes fishing and then keeps the fish out of the water for a few minutes and feels good when they release it thinking the fish will live because it swam away. Idiots. If you fish when you want to eat them and not release then you generally don't have to worry about how to handle the fish. In other words, I am against catch and release for trout because, as you say, they can be on the delicate side. But your instructional video should be seen by every fisherman that does not know what you know. I wonder what your guess would be on how many fisherman, some fishing for years could have made this video. Sadly, my own guess is the smaller group know how to handle a trout as well as you.

Hey scott, I appreciate your perspective. I like the rule about holding your breath. When you gets uncomfortable that’s when you need to release it back into the water. I’m hoping this video helps make a difference for a lot of people and the fish.
