      Playoff hockey is different. 5-6 years ago the Lightning were great in regular season, then disappeared in playoffs. Then management asseessed their needs in free agency and trades, opting not for the best players available (they already had them) but the right players to fulfill needed roles. Result: three straight finals appearances. Last year at the deadline the Rangers made the mistake of going for the best available in Tarasenko and Kane, instead of the right players. Result: early golf season.

    Why is everybody talking about Winnipeg? What about how lights out the Avs played. The last 4 games (forget game 1), the Avs were unstoppable!! They averaged 5 goals on the NHL's best defense and goalie! And they did this while play great team defense! Our goaltender played great (again, except game 1) and our whole team skated hard to puck in all three zones (except a bit in Game 5). I don't get why everyone isn't talking about how the whole avalanche team...all four lines...were elite and if they continue to play this way could be unstoppable. Where is the love?

    • @19nickman
      @19nickman Месяц назад +1

      I think it’s because what the Avs did is expected of them. The real storyline is how the Jets just fell apart on all levels. How the Jennings and Vezina winning goaltender let in 5+ goals a game, how a team with so much depth on offense became completely anemic.
      It’s not really taking anything away from the Avs, because this is par for the course for them. And they’ve got three more rounds to go, all with much tougher opponents than the Jets, so they have to see if they can sustain their play against teams that won’t just let them do what they want with no adjustments.
      But the Jets played so badly that they made an already formidable Avs team look invincible. And that needs to be discussed.

    • @soulknife20
      @soulknife20 Месяц назад +1

      Part of it is that the Jets had the Vezina winning goalie and the team won the Jennings trophy by beating absolutely suffocating defensively, forgetting the Avs scored over 300 goals during the season.

    First, I love Hellebuyck, even as an Avs fan, I think he's just a great goaltender. The problem the Jets had is one the Avs fans are all too familiar with. Jets players thought they were just the better team going into this series. They outplayed the Avs so much in the regular season that they didn't respect them going into the post season, and frankly, they got sloppy. Avs did it a couple years in the second round, where they just thought they were the best, and got sloppy. The number of times WPG players were out of position, lost coverage on their assignments, or just did the laziest passing was just disrespectful. The Avs still have a cup winning core, who know what it takes to win, and will exploit every mistake you make and turn it into a goal... that time the Jets won 7-0 in Denver didn't scare the Avs core, it reminded them that nothing can be taken for granted. The Jets are a fantastic team, but a ton of their problems, including hanging Hellebuyck out to dry a bunch of times, were subsequent to them just not being in the game mentally.

    As an Avs fan I can say Colorado learned what Tampa did when they went back to back about the regular season. The effort wasn't always there in the regular season, that was also the case with those Tampa teams (they won the Presidents trophy the year before winning, and got swept in round 1. They didn't win their division either of the cup winning years by conserving energy (and cap space with LTIR.)
    Colorado really responded to the playoff atmosphere maybe not immediately, but by the end of Game 1 when the "Pull your goalie" chants rained down on Georgiev, the entire team took that personally and not only wanted to win, but crush those Winnipeg fans. As an Avs fan, I thank the Jets fans for motivating the team in a unique way, you don't score 29 goals in 5 games against the best defense/goalie in the NHL regular season on accident, and I think you guys really got us rolling to a point where we're playing the right way at the right time.

      @@skippy675 Americans don't have that format as straight down the line as you'd think. In the NFL, Packers fans are known for a huge number of things, and one of them is their "Go Pack Go" chant, which was originally part of a fight song that the fans would sing dating back to 1931 entitled 'Go You Packers, Go!'
      I also know I've heard "Lets go Oilers" chants from time to time, and "Go Kings Go" at least once as well; if we wanted to limit this scope to hockey.

    As a Jets fan I was really worried after game one when we couldn't hold a 3 goal lead. It showed the intensity and threat the Avs truly were and brought to light that Jets were unable or unwilling to follow the gameplan that brought them so much success through the season. I feel like our defense core was not backchecked to that level through most of the season. It showed the cracks as I only ever felt confident when Morrisey had the puck in our end as he was the only one I felt confident to carry it or actually complete a first pass. Additionally, looking at the our bench when the lead took a turn the Avs way was never reassuring. Our game breaker was Big Buff, he could make a play, hit, or scrum that could give us big momentum shifts. Right now I don't think we have anyone that can be a game breaker. Love the team, wish the Avs the best, and hope we can find some answers as we prepare for next season. Please.....please beat the Knights if they make it through.

    People were booing Pionk because he has been a disasterpiece in the dcorps. Contributing to being eliminated was the icing on the cake. A lot of fault also comes from Rick Bowness ability (or lack thereof) to adapt. He says he coaches by feel, instead of looking at the game ahead. When Colorado made changes to the lines and strategy, Bowness just gambled on the same system to work, and when it didn't, he just gambled again until we ended up 3-1, getting embarassed in the process as well.
    He made some good adaptive changes for game 5 (Dressing Perfetti and Miller, taking out Stanley, Ehlers with Scheifele and Vilardi) and it started to look good, it looked doable for 40 minutes, but then reverted them in the third period where they got hemmed in again like the other 4 games of the playoffs.
    This Jets team is a real threat but when you can sit down and draft a better plan for the next game, the way Colorado did, the coaching staff is exposed as being the weakest link in the chain.

    As a Jets fan who was at all three of the home games, the whole thing comes down to something pretty simple for me. The Jets and Avs play two very different styles of hockey; Winnipeg has a tight, defensive make-you-pay-for-your-mistakes game that was the reason we allowed the fewest goals in the regular season. Colorado plays the track meet; they know they don't have an elite goalie, but they do have elite scoring (2 or even 3 of the top 5 in the sport, depending on who you ask), so they play fast, loose, and aggressive.
    All five games of this series, the Avs forced the Jets to play their style of hockey, and frankly, the Avs are just better at it. The Jets got sloppy trying to play like the Avs do because it's not what they were built on. It's a miracle the Jets won even one game playing that way.
    I remember hearing on the radio that one of the Avs (McKinnon?) said after Game 1 or 2 they were going to be happy to win 2-1 because the Jets were so good defensively. The Avs were never going to win any games 2-1. Any tight, low-scoring games this series would have gone to Winnipeg, but there weren't any.
    The series was 4-1, but in terms of who got to decide the pace of play, the Avs won 5-0

However, the Avs offense was like COD zombies and came in WAVES. That seemed to wear out the Jets defense. I'm surprised people aren't talking more about the offense slump. Like, where was Connor, Ehlers, and Scheifele in the last 3 games?? 7 goals in game 1, but only 1 in a must win game 4?? Brutal...

    Hockey players are human. The jets were fatigued by the pressure and the avalanche know how to pace themselves towards the end of the season and get geared up for the playoffs. That’s why the 7-0 happened and then this series.
    Playin hockey in Canada is a different animal. The pressure is more intense because hockey is the most popular by far. The American teams have other sports to keep their fan base occupied and hockey is always on the back burner compared to the other sports.

    My take is that it will be easier to assess this series for the Jets a little further down the road. What I watched was an Avs team that was just better than the Jets and looked better than they did at any point during the regular season and did it consistently for five games even though they lost game one. So the reason for assessing further down the road is that if the Avs truly were only giving 80% for the most part during the season and come out and dominate future series opponents, might be less of “Jets played poorly” and more “Everyone ran into a juggernaut”.

With Demelo and Dillon coming off the books you need to find out what that d cores vision moving forward is. Also stop playing Hellebuyck 60 games a season. You had a great back up and I think you can find another solid one. Play Hellebuyck 50 games, 55 max, during the season. Keep him well rested and upgrade at D he should be lights out.

    We were the stingiest team all season long, but at the same time generated next to no offence. Only a handful of games where the Jets scored 4 or more, and they took that style into the playoffs, where it just doesn't fly. With a huge rush team like the Avs turning it up to 11, the Jets' D fell apart, and Hellebuyck was overworked. Sure, we went like 32 games allowing 3 or fewer, but we were only winning those by 1 or 2 goals. That doesn't translate to a cup-calibre team.

    Colorado made some changes to their lineup that was designed to disrupt a teams core. Their 4th line, with Duhaime and Trenin are meant to physically and mentally make the night hell for the other team. Gets them hurt, tired, and frustrated. So you end up by the end of Game 1: No one wants to play against the 4th line, and no one wants to play against the Mackinnon, Rantenen, Nichushkin line. Avs second line plays like most team's 1st lines, and you have the Colton, Wood line at 3rd who are just a solid fast offensive line. So best case scenario you're on your back foot trying to defend against a really fast and heavy team trying to capitalize on mistakes. And they don't make many when they get going.
    I think their core kind of view the regular season as like training almost. All about the Playoffs for them. And it seems they put a team together to help them impose their will on the Playoff context.

He looked very intense and ready to go fight for every inch, which represented how the team kept fighting even when their goalie was having an absolute dumpster fire game.
