    I always wonder what it was like for vendors to prepare for artist alleys. I usually spend the first walk around scoping out what vendors have so I can prioritize and budget what I want to buy but by my second walk around, stuff that I was gonna buy would be sold out 😅

    Currently watching while I"m prepping for a convention in Myrtle Beach. I was always a cosplayer and either a guest or a judge, but never had a booth. LET ME TELL YOU being an artist now with my own booth is SO much more stressful than that ever was lmao

  • @AshleyDawnD
    @AshleyDawnD 3 года назад +38

    I was high key STRESSED watching you prep for this after hearing how much you had to do in so little time. OMG you killed it girl, way to go!
    Also, I made the mistake of drinking a LOT of iced coffee during my November setup and I was shaking so bad omg my anxiety hit the roof. And I didn't even have anything to stress about, idk how you made it through 😂
    That aside, it was so interesting to hear about how your experience went! Really interesting point about the QR code thing, I had no idea you could do that..? Glad you enjoyed it overall, congrats!

    It's hard to gauge the amount of product you need to bring for different events. Definitely poke around and ask artists what they tend to do. You can probably find a good average from that, especially with artists that are similar to you.
    If you're able to network, not only will you make new friends and learn more things, but you can also find out about lots of events you wouldn't know of otherwise and can share travel costs when you're going to the same place. I had a slow con in the spring, but did a lot of networking and it was so great because of that. So definitely take advantage of every moment to connect with those around you.
    One of the things that made it easier for me, especially when it gets busy, is my helper and I will prepare bags behind the table with business cards (and any freebie I might have) so we can grab and go really fast. Most people want a bag when I ask them probably not only to keep their merch safe, but also to carry other things in it too. So I always have a bunch ready for me to grab when someone buys something. It's just one less thing to stress over and forget in the moment.

    This is such a great video. I love that we get to follow along with your adventure but that you also go through the nitty gritty logistics of preparing for selling at a con. It’s fascinating to get a glimpse of the world on the opposite side of the artist alley table. Whenever I get to a con again I’ll have a new appreciation for the amount of work that goes into being an artist alley seller!

    Woa that is awesome that you were able to break even on your first con!
    I'm going to be in the Emerald city comic con next month and its my first artist alley....I understand the feels you got haha!
    I'm lucky that I'm living here in Seattle already and I'm close to downtown so I don't have to pay for a room...
    Also a thing I'm planning on doing and it might also be an idea for your future cons? (unless you mentioned it already and I didn't catch it)
    I have my own printer to print more prints at the end of the day incase they actually sell.
    Plus I was also planning on just going to staples or office depot? to print more...or have a friend ready to go print more during the con if its still early in the daaaaay....
    That way you don't miss out on sales for prints that are doing really well.
    But any way congrats again on a successful con and hope you get in more!

I was planning on brining 20 of each print as well...and now reconsidering. Although I'm going to a smaller Comic Con then the NYC one, I may up the number of prints now...Did you print them all from home? Because the quality looked awesome!! To add to the cash > card thing from a buyer perspective:
    If your card can be skimmed at a gas station, managed and secured by [big corporation], I am not swiping my card on some random person’s phone. And that’s with me having a credit card, where I can dispute a charge and get the money back if something fishy happens. Younger people with only debit cards will be out of money with zero recourse.
    Honestly, it’s a security thing for me.

    • @zelrius8714
      @zelrius8714 2 года назад

      so do you recommend bringing cash instead? I'm going to an anime convention for the first time soon, and I was juggling with that. I usually always use cash because I'm paranoid about things like that, but then again I heard some or very few vendors at the con I'm going to might not accept cash. Other than that, i only own a debit card and I don't have stuff like venmo or paypal although I could set one up

    • @arespostale_art
      @arespostale_art 2 года назад

      @@zelrius8714 I personally always use cash in any convention I go. I tend to trust some of the big vendors with my card with an actual machine system to swipe and printing receipts, but this is also because they sell some bigger/more expensive items like jackets and have warranty as well. But almost every vendor I have seen have taken cash. These little phone card swiper things people use nowadays tho I do not let near my card. That said, this me being paranoid like you and plenty of people do trust it.
      If an artist didn’t have enough cash or the right change, they usually arranged for me to check back later or I end up with change through other shopping, so I have never missed out!
      I do recommend a credit card > debit, as you can get your money back after a scam with credit but usually cannot with debit. Also (not sure how it is now with covid), be careful with your wallet because it is super crowded with traffic flowing all directions and people stopping and going. I use a cane so I have a lanyard wallet from my neck to access it, but that or something similar to keep your money in your sight is best! And have your own bag for the merch! Lots of vendors do not have bags, since they sell tiny things. If buying a poster, plan on how you get it home without wrinkles!! Same for the big glass figurine. Can you pack it for your flight without issue? Make sure it won’t roll in the car?
      Hope you enjoy your first con!!

      Hi 👋🏾 if you’re still looking for an answer, I can help. It all depends on how heavy or many items are going on the display. I’ve seen other vendors use zip ties to hold together or use heavy items on the bottom shelves to give stability. Hope this helps x
