Nearly a decade ago this man had the foresight to use RUclips as a medium to get his work out there. I think we all need to pause and think about the fact that this was done by a guy who didn't even realize his camera could record video. Incredible.
Wow. Never in a million years would i have thought i would hear from a manga artist that copying for practice is a good way to learn. this is the only way i have been able to teach myself drawing growing up because i couldn't afford lessons and i always thought it was wrong. I've been feeling bad about my art lately but this really opened my eyes a lot. i can't wait to grow more as a manga artist and further develop my own style! Thank you Mark Crilley!
There's nothing wrong with copying if it is for you to learn. Even in draw classes you do a lot of "copy" draws, you've to "save data" in your memory so you can replicate it later. If you never look at a draw and try to draw it urself how are you supposed to know how to draw it?, you've to study it first, copy that draw and by doing that even if you don't notice you're saving some details and techniques in your memory and that it's what makes you able to replicate it later :) don't be afraid and gl on your journey ! :)
if you'd like you can spend 80k on art school, and they'll give you a solid 6 month curriculum of copying other people's work. They are called "studies." At the end of the day it's all about taking what you see, be it something physical in real life, or other art, and re-producing in whatever medium you are using. You would practice anything in the same way really: That's cool, let's see if I can do it.
I'm in my freshman year of my Illustration major and in my figure drawing class we had homework assignments that are called master copies. You have to take the drawing the teacher provides from a great artist and copy it as exact to detail as you can. It helped a lot of us gain a better understanding of subtle lighting, line weight, and important landmarks (ribs, iliac crest, etc.). So yeah! keep on learning!
The strangest thing about my experience of watching Mark has to be when I first heard his name. I thought I recognized it, and then I realized he was the one who wrote Akiko, which I had read as a kid! Strange how these things work.
i never thought....mark looks like this...its difficult to accept the fact that i'm seeing his face for the first time when i always hear his voice...AND he has a japanese wife...
My favorite videos of Mark Crilley were definitely the ones that compared animation/cartoon styles, especially since no one ever seems to talk about that. I hope he does more of those soon!
It's actually quite interesting, the way Mark does his videos. It brings back the older style of "hand of the artist" films form the days before color and sound movies. It was one of the first forms of animation, and I find it intriguing that this style has made such a comeback.
OMG. my teachers name is Richard Baxter. he is an amazing drawer like mark. he went to japan AND china to teach English. his wife is Japanese. he is not as cheerful and awesome as mark crilley but they have similar lives! wow other people may not share my fascination but i had to post this up here.
Thank you so much for doing this interview! It really answered a lot of my questions and everything. Also, good work with the editing! I was so excited when I saw this!
my favorite is actually a tie between, the realistic manga, realistic eye, and four ways to draw males eyes, and page layouts. They are still so helpful
gonna keep up with the MC vids. learn as much as i can. very imformative vids. and thank goodness for kids and their tech knowledge. cos without them, we wouldnt have Mark Crilley explainin how its done..
I can often notice when lines are in the wrong or right place, but I find it very difficult to fix them, so leave them how they are and end up un happy in my final product.
Favorite Mark Crilley video has to be well I don't have a favorite there all influential and useful to improve skills. I'm glad he actually cares for his subscribers and helps us out.
i've been watching your videos for about a month Mark - i have ordered your how to draw Manga book and paper, you are just amazingly inspirational.... ty :D
9:51 actually tracing is a very helpful skill to have. if you are inking something you dont want to mess up and have to start over or spend the time in photoshop
i agree with that whole thing on 'the tools dont matter'. they really dont. ive been drawing for six years and am asked alll the time what am i using. yes i give the brands but i also say it doesnt matter. sure different things give you different effects and what not, but you can create quality work with just a #2 pencil and normal printer paper..
Observation drawing from both other artists and reality is undoubtedly the best way to enhance your skills, yet, tutorials are good when it comes to the basics.
For me, I'd have to say the "how to draw hands (2 ways)" was my favorite...which is cutting it close with a few of my other favs. But this ones my favorite because this was the issue I, sadly, like a lot of other artist, struggled with most :p But by studying it hand-on I was able to unlock some of the secrets to involved. It was a very rewarding experience, and I won't forget it
Keep at it and never stop drawing. I used to draw a lot, then I got into digital art with graphic design and started using a tablet. Now I am trying to get into tattooing and quickly realized I stabbed myself in the foot using photoshop for so long.
ya my favorite has always been the 100 way to draw eyes one. i've been requesting on more than one occation for him to do something else like hair or action poses mabye.
@marinkify Their prismacolor pencils. And theirs also the Col-Erase pencils. Thats what hes using and just go to staples or order them online. Its cheaper online. Because at staples i saw them for 12 and 24 dollars. Online they where half off
Took me 10 years of searching to figure that a Ticonderoga was the best tool for me. My favorite pen by FAR, for finalizing the sketch, is a freebie from the Hilton hotel. Moral of the story? If you're spending dozens on sketch tools, you're doing it wrong. Use what you're hand is most comfortable with. 8 out of10 times, it's something you grew up with.
Iam working on my own Manga Series (I think that iam really Skilled because everyone says that iam good). I will publish it as Webcomic on ComicGenesis :D
***** Inkblazers is built around manga, where they treat you like a mangaka. even giving you the option to get paid and publish your manga in paperback.Sorry about the late reply.
I actually got so used to drawing in school when I had free time, that I actually feel more comfortable using a mechanical pencil than a normal one. It's going to be hard to go back to the normal ones when I study art in depth.
I've actually bought manga before just to use it as a drawing study, not even cause I was interested in the story line. It's mainly shoujo stuff. I'm more of a shonen fan, but I like to draw more detailed & 'girly' than they usually do.
i disagree on just one point.. though i no longer 'trace', it can be useful when learning. though of course to ink, one must typically trace the pencil sketch.
My favorite Mark Crilley video was how to draw a cat girl. I had never drawn manga before viewing the video, I decided to draw along with the video and ended up with a decent looking drawing after only 14 minutes. Having never drawn anything I was very impressed with how my drawing looked.
This is the first time I'm actually seeing what Mark Crilley looks like. He's completely different from what I had pictured in my head. I always pictured a rounder, balding man with glasses for some reason. Haha!! He definitely looks way better than what I pictured!
I like the chibi drawings and all the ones that show him drawing random things like that manga spongebob squirrel and that enormous egg artwork. and answering questions videos
I love Japanese people . Your son was adorable in the video I just watched. You are so smart for marrying your beautiful wife. My best friend in middle school was Krestin Hong. Her father was Japanese. Her mom was a nice woman who could cook fresh homemade bread for us after sleepovers. My bff Krestin and I used to doodle on notebook paper listening to Elton John. I still have my drawings of different eyes on a page SOMEWHERE! I will search for it later. Love ur talent. You inspire!
the only good thing to come from a how to draw book is pre-drafts the funny thing about most of them is that the cover sucks you in but you find out that that art on the cover is not what is taught to you in those books
Hey man big fan been watching for a while now and just say this and got me thinking I illustrated for a book and it's coming out soon and was wondering if maybe you could show it sometime and if so ill get the cover to you.
@MrRobert6610 Its using it as reference, I do it alot :) First, try and copy as closely as you can, then start changing things up a bit and adding your own twists on things, then you can use the shapes and stuff youve learned to start drawing your own stuff :)
Authentic Japanese manga is sketched with a grey-led, inked with a G-pen (in most cases), and (if) toned with 'real' screentone, that is cut with a knife.
Good doesn't get you published, or recognized. This is why artists spend years getting better and better and better and ALWAYS get better. Good will only take you so far and it won't get you to a professional level. You will have to go from good, to great, to amazing, to epic and so on and so forth. There's also the matter of opinion, what is good to you may be "Meh" to another. Always raise the bar of your skill, never be content with where you're at and always aim higher.
Nearly a decade ago this man had the foresight to use RUclips as a medium to get his work out there. I think we all need to pause and think about the fact that this was done by a guy who didn't even realize his camera could record video. Incredible.
Landon Hagan everything happens for a reason...
What?!
He isn't a talking hand?!
Is it weird that every time I watch this I get really motivated to start drawing right away?
Mark Crilley is giving us the art skills that artists charge for.
Wow. Never in a million years would i have thought i would hear from a manga artist that copying for practice is a good way to learn. this is the only way i have been able to teach myself drawing growing up because i couldn't afford lessons and i always thought it was wrong. Guy: What pencil is that?
Mark: Black Prisma color
Guy: I see....What pencil is that?
That's how the comments be too lol
Mark: Black Prisma color
Guy : ohh, ok...what pencil do you use?
lol
i never thought....mark looks like this...its difficult to accept the fact that i'm seeing his face for the first time when i always hear his voice...AND he has a japanese wife...
Holy crap! His how to draw a realistic eye drawing now has 24,000,000 views!
His videos of his old art from back in his day, they really gave me an influence on to keep going.
My favorite videos of Mark Crilley were definitely the ones that compared animation/cartoon styles, especially since no one ever seems to talk about that. I hope he does more of those soon!

That advice with the whole copying a work you like until you learn what it is that they do, I think that's probably the best advice ever!
:o I actually learned something in the end of the video from the prodigy himself, Mark Crilley. Thank you for the motivation! :D
Oooh I love that one that teaches you how to draw the entire body of a character. I still keep the copy I did while watching that video :)
my favorite is actually a tie between, the realistic manga, realistic eye, and four ways to draw males eyes, and page layouts. They are still so helpful

Rarely ever buy how to books. Personally I buy art books for anime, movies and what not and they have helped alot!

He's a huge infuence for me, I'll say. My art is all I have right now, and I really want to make it count!

Mark's eyes drawing skill is phenomenal
how to draw a realstic eye time (lapse video) is my favorite of his videos
