I was ready to give it a chance, then cringing at it during the opening ceremony, then fully hating it after the cover incident in FP1. But the race itself was fantastic. So much overtaking, so much excitement. One of the best races of the year.
The opening ceremony was stupid. But at least it was entirely skippable. The people who suffer most are the drivers having to deal with it, but at least it wasn't shortly before the race like Miami.
@@JoePCool14 Yes it wasn't done right before the race. I don't feel the least bit of sorrow over the "suffering" of the drivers with the timing like the Vegas event. They don't get that money for those private jets because they drive fast; it's because folks are entertained by them. So they have to put up with fan event obligations and social media events; poor babies. Not.
Vegas has dealt a death blow to Miami! Considering that F1 made Miami a sprint race to try and increase revenue, shows that Vegas has become everything they wanted to be and more. I don’t expect Miami to stay on the calendar past it’s contract and we may be down to 2 US races. I’d like to see a race in Chicago or Indianapolis to replace it!!
Vegas and COTA are certainly much better than Miami. Miami should not have taken the lazy way out and built a track in a football stadium. If it was a circuit along the ocean it could have been great
I certainly thought it was a success. Of the eight F1 races I have attended in the last two years. I thought it was the best. That being said everyone on Thursday should’ve gotten a full refund. I agree about the paddock lighting. It was super dark. They need to have some lower priced grandstands and general admission especially for Nevadans if they want to build Goodwill with some of the locals. Also, they need to mount giant TV screens on the main grandstand above the skybox so that people in the Paddock club who paid $20,000 or more per ticket can actually see what’s going on. There wasn’t one TV there this year so all of the paddock club guests did not see the live action of the race if they were watching from the balcony. As a race track, it was stellar. So much overtaking and passing opportunities. Very competitive track. Between the overtaking and the visuals it was stunning.
The exposure gain from vegas has been huge, influencers who are a million miles removed from f1 usually are making/have made videos talking about how incredible it was and how much they enjoyed it. MKBHD being a good example, the worlds biggest tech channel, did a 30 minute explainer for f1 with millions of views. He actually got ME more excited, and that’s hard!
@@KymIllman “the worlds biggest and most advanced tech competition” and “a science fair for over achieving adults” were two lines that really hit home for me. I’ve followed F1 religiously for 25years, and it gave me a great new perspective.
The celebrity thing is funny, because the most famous people who actually made it onto F1's stream were Gordon Ramsay and Rob McElhenney. There may have been more there, but you wouldn't have known it watching from home.
I'll be going to the next Vegas GP and I hope to see you there. Your behind the scenes videos have been absolutely awesome and have been a nice addition to the Formula 1 season. Hopefully next year there's a little more drama cause that will help the channel grow even more! Merry Christmas to the fam
The Grand Prix weekend might have been an overwhelming success, but the weeks and months leading up to it and afterwards were dramatic. Many thousands cancelled their visit because of all the preparation going on. When Vegas and the hotel operators do not tackle this issue, the race could have a short lifespan when the overall results do not increase the annual sales figures. And is Vegas challenging Monaco? Not for a long time. Monaco is the oldest F1 race and has a rich history that is not quickly taken away. On top of that, other races are better contenders for Monaco's spot. Take a look at Miami, for instance. That race and everything around I enjoyed more than Vegas (plus I got a sun tan for free and hotels were affordable)
I think you are spot on Kym , I am sure the city of LV and the F1 organisers will be working harder to increase the experience to the spectators and the TV audience. I had my doubts leading into the race and now are starting to consider going to the one in 2025 ( and hopefully meet you there or before at another event )
5:00 I agree that it is important to the local economy that the casinos are busy, but I can't remember ever seeing a report about how busy the Monte Carlo casino is on race weekend? Probably not a fair comparison due to two totally different economies.
I was there and it was crazy! It was definitely a success, the race was one of the best ones I have ever seen and the fact that every single hotel and business was giving their everything made it better. Las Vegas is an incredible place to have a race, specially at night, lets hope they stay for a while. Also, it is great for everyone that wants to get a free view of the F1 cars, great free views in many places, although you might need to do some research beforehand, next to the Cosmo at the end of the strip is the best place at turn 14, most of the overtakes took place there and no grandstands. In the end, the free view was the best view
I really didn't understand the amount of negativity surrounding this race beforehand. The race was great, besides the Carlos/Ferrari ordeal in FP1. I hope it only gets better!
yeah I didn’t think it’d be a hit but proved wrong thankfully. besides the whole wall destruction, Carlos penalty, and fans getting kicked out stuff going on, the race itself was pretty good
I hate the venue because it literally put mom and pop businesses out of business. Literally gone. No more. I can’t and won’t support a venue that puts peoples livelihood in jealousy or out of a job. F1 yet again put profit over people.
I live here and work at Venetian. The issue with blocking out the bridges is totally a safety issue, but not safety about the race. It is crowd control. The escalators at Wynn and Palazzo remain working, and that corner is where they enter the strip. It is a very high traffic area, so public safety is the reason, full stop. Not greed from F1, this is a Las Vegas Metro PD mandate.
The start time is abysmal. Europe can get up in the middle of the night for one race like I do for the majority of the season. The attempt to price gouge wasn't pretty, either.
I have watched a few of your pod casts and I just subscribed because they are very well done with no nonsense or clickbait and always great info. on things happening, so I always wish you well and hope you prosper even more because great work costs money.
Caesars Palace missed the opportunity to play title sponsor for the race, given how the last Las Vegas race in 1982 was known as the Caesars Palace Grand Prix.
I was in the main grandstand and I enjoyed the event. Yes it was expensive, but I think we ended up having the best possible seats for the race. We were in the center and had a great view of the track and the pits, and could also clearly see the screens. People in the Skybox said they had to stand the whole time, and if you didn't get a spot right up against the railing they couldn't see the track. People in the paddock club complained about having to stand, and they couldn't see any screens. Apparently the Mirage and Bellagio grandstands had screens, but no audio. I would like to go again, but I would also like to see tickets cost about half as much. I think without support races, they also need to do more stuff between the sessions. Race day was fine, but between the other sessions there just wasn't a whole lot to do. The Sphere area had a lot of concerts, but the main grandstand area didn't have much aside from the short driver interviews and some photo spots.

I respectfully disagree. The whole event is a sign of how F1 legacy is put aside to increase the market value of its organizer. Next to that, modern F1 cars deserve a real circuit. That’s where cars and drivers are pushed to the limits and we get to see what F1 is really about.
This turned out to be the one weekend of the season that I was travelling so I watched the race in a hotel room on my laptop. Just re-watched it again and it is right up there with Singapore as one of the top two races of 2023. Funny how a lot of folks disparage street circuits, but this year they produced the two best races. Not all street circuits need to be as boring as Monaco. I loved the opening ceremony, too; sorta like Super Bowl Halftime. It was good to be earlier in the weekend and not right before the race like in Miami and Mexico. 'sounds like even Max had a bit of a change of heart. Of course his public persona is to be the Brusque Dutchman, and that's not gonna change. IMO it's a bit silly to complain about looking like a clown when they race in suits covered with gaudy corporate logos; don't they always look like clowns?
No matter what facts or figures come out that show it was a success - LV locals and bloggers will just say the data is bullshit and made up. They will stop at nothing to bad mouth F1, it’s exhausting.
of all things I'm most disappointed of how the track looked on TV... you could pick any Formula E race with tall sponsor branded walls and it would look the same while watching the race there was nothing that would say Vegas except for the curbs, that was a nice touch, but most angles would provide a backdrop of fences or tarmac upon tarmac I had no idea what part of the track the cars have been at, but ig that's a problem with any new circuit tbf overall, I don't mind the race staying on the calendar, but the cringe ceremony at the end was just so terrible that it ruined the feeling the DRS powered overtakes provided
"Viva Las Vega" but "Vivas" for you Kym Wilman the best thing from formula-1 and Daniel Ricciard too. Viva a Autralia. For give us both: Kym and Dani 🏁🤝💝🏁
During P1, and when they started kicking fans out during P2, I was convinced the weekend was going to be a debacle. The welcome ceremony/show was full of eye-roll moments and I hope they don't do that again. But the race itself was a banger. I look forward to next year. Whether the race lasts for the long term will depend a lot on placating the locals. I was in Vegas in June, when preparations had already started, and I hear that things are still not back to normal yet at the end of December. Locals and visitors at other times are going to make an even bigger fuss if the disruptions again last months for a four night event.
Oh, and about start times: Folks from the Americas regularly have to watch recordings of GPs that run during our night time. Europeans shouldn't mind having to do that a few times a year. So let's have a reasonable start time, say 9pm.
The negative people was 99 percent Las Vegas natives. People wanted to be apart of Las Vegas F1 without paying a dime. Lol. Look at all the RUclipsrs with all negative things to say.
I was admiring all this from project management perspective. Such a huge thing to organize, that was really impressive. Sure, there were issues, but with the scale of the event, it could have been much worse. I wonder why all the hate, F1 is a show as much as it is racing, so even the opening ceremony was fine with me. Maybe uk fans can't digest a success in US, who knows. Overall, amazing event, great racing. Incomparable to Monaco, that is iconic only because of nostalgia these days, racing there is nonexistent, area is boring. I would have removed it from a calendar years ago.
I was really hoping you could get a giraffe or zebra to wander into your video so you could yell at it for interrupting you! Did you get to see a lot of animals this trip? (The wild kind, in Kenya, not the Vegas ones!)
I was excited that F1 was going to Las Vegas. My friend and I like to go around the US seeing races but when we saw the absolute price gouging that the F1 and all the Casino resorts were asking… no thanks. And at that point I could care less if the Las Vegas F1 was a success. And if the F1 is planning on doing this every year… Las Vegas better do a better… FASTER job of constructing and de-constructing the facilities.
I think it all boils down to who you ask. I have seen and heard a lot of conflicting information about the event. One thing for certain is that all groups responsible for the the race need to sit down together and make some changes for next year.
Just like everyone, once Carlos got unplugged I thought oh no over-hyped farce (Miami 2.0) but I have to say as far as the race is concerned it was the best of the year
The race itself will be better next year but the creepy hype before... meh. They should give those businesses some type of compensation out of what the city makes on the race.
Wetter it was a financial succes or not I just don't like what this event represents, F1 as a entertainment producer and investing things like construction of the pits and other structures. But that's just my personal opinion.
Everything before the race was a mess! F1 dropped the ball, no information except from you! After the race, the drive from cooldown to podium was really crinfeworthy! (The 3 drivers were really squashed in). Adjusting the race times to suit European audiences is ludicrous and I live in Europe!! Thanks for a great video! Agreed, the locals were really disadvantaged. In my opinion, they could have built a track outside city limits!
Im never gonna go to this race or any race in America and or Canada. F1 is too expensive. I unfortunately, will never afford to watch a race live. I will continue recording all the races and watching them on my own time thank you.
Thanks Kym. Vegas was an exciting race to watch and much more interesting than Monaco. How would you determine if it can overtake Monaco as F1’s jewel in the crown? Revenue? Spectator numbers? Something else?
I think you’re being disingenuous here. You have a lot of money. Talk of $100k chips on the tables. Rich celebs. You have to remember that Liberty Media’s entire original claim to want F1 was that it was too exclusive and too much for the rich, and that they wanted to make the whole thing a lot more fan-friendly and accessible. The Vegas GP was the complete opposite of that. Go and talk to the smaller stores and shops - not just the MGM resorts. A lot more of them lost their shirts that weekend than you reported on. Poor sight lines from the Strip grandstands, horrendous ticket prices, idiotic room prices. For a true F1 fan, this was a complete lockout and to us, it looked like the rich celebrating the rich and screw everyone else. I’m sorry but I think you and the rich and the mega resorts are the only people who really think this was a success. Liberty media need to u-turn on this policy of hyper exclusivity or they’re going to kill the essence of F1 and it will just become celebs and the ultra rich who can attend, and none of them will have any idea why they are there.
Was it a success? It seemed everything that happened off the track was bordering on or literally humiliating. The racing, the sport part, seemed very good.
Interesting, i didn't watch LV Gp, i wasn't partic drawn to esp as Championship over. As to your ref re LV eclipsing Monaco, doubt it, Monaco has the class, LV has not!!
It was a great race. and honestly miami has over performed as well. I hate all of the extra junk attached to these races too, but some people are just brain rotted.
Once the Drive to Survive crowd took over F1 the legacy fans were doomed. Vegas had it's chance and failed; F1 should never have gone back. F1 used to have my attention every race weekend; now with it's new direction I am closer to being done completely. The cars suck, the new tracks suck, the drivers suck, the commentary sucks, the entertainment is fabricated and barely exists on track. IIRC the Indy race at Mid Ohio in '18 had 110+ passes on track for position, but I am sure Vegas saw a lot of passing. Ohh wow, I see Max won. Couldn't have predicted that outcome.
Quit making stuff, I was in the crowd where charles overtook checo and no one cheered. The whole crowd did cheer when checo over took charles before that. The only ones cheering for charles were ppl watching on tv sets and twitter. 98% of the fans that showed up were all checo fans and the ones watching on the public street. Why dont you show that clip where all the fans chanted for checo at the sphere? Oh thats right doesn’t fit your riccaro narrative..

They will stop at nothing to bad mouth F1, it’s exhausting.
of all things I'm most disappointed of how the track looked on TV... you could pick any Formula E race with tall sponsor branded walls and it would look the same
while watching the race there was nothing that would say Vegas except for the curbs, that was a nice touch, but most angles would provide a backdrop of fences or tarmac upon tarmac
I had no idea what part of the track the cars have been at, but ig that's a problem with any new circuit tbf
overall, I don't mind the race staying on the calendar, but the cringe ceremony at the end was just so terrible that it ruined the feeling the DRS powered overtakes provided
"Viva Las Vega" but "Vivas" for you Kym Wilman the best thing from formula-1 and Daniel Ricciard too. Viva a Autralia. For give us both: Kym and Dani 🏁🤝💝🏁
Muchos gracias
They should run it 3 or 4 hours earlier for a warmer track.
not happening. prime time strip hours
@@herewegoagain7403 What's that got to do with anything if there's a track set up?
@@PeterKKraus everything. This is Vegas, not monacco, where everything can be shut down. have a think.
good video Kym.
Kym has his Burning Beds shirt on.
Always a pleasure. Thank you.
Thanks again!
The “City” of Las Vegas is not involved with the race and the track is not within its borders. The strip is under the jurisdiction of Clark County.
The negative people was 99 percent Las Vegas natives. People wanted to be apart of Las Vegas F1 without paying a dime. Lol. Look at all the RUclipsrs with all negative things to say.
Great video
10:56 Hey, grip was an issue on turn 1 lap 1 already. Lando's accident wasn't also caused by this partly?
I was admiring all this from project management perspective. Such a huge thing to organize, that was really impressive. Sure, there were issues, but with the scale of the event, it could have been much worse. I wonder why all the hate, F1 is a show as much as it is racing, so even the opening ceremony was fine with me. Maybe uk fans can't digest a success in US, who knows. Overall, amazing event, great racing. Incomparable to Monaco, that is iconic only because of nostalgia these days, racing there is nonexistent, area is boring. I would have removed it from a calendar years ago.
It’s amazing isn’t it.
The race? Yes
Everything else? No
I was really hoping you could get a giraffe or zebra to wander into your video so you could yell at it for interrupting you!
They’re not planning on doing it every year. Bringing the pavement up to F1 standards was a one-off
I think it all boils down to who you ask. I have seen and heard a lot of conflicting information about the event. One thing for certain is that all groups responsible for the the race need to sit down together and make some changes for next year.
The cars were absolutely slipping and sliding around. Every crash at least played a part to it. Made it exciting though.
Just like everyone, once Carlos got unplugged I thought oh no over-hyped farce (Miami 2.0) but I have to say as far as the race is concerned it was the best of the year
By the way, swell entertainment here on youtube gave you a shoutout btw!
I’m most grateful for that
I had a blast at the race. We didn't have any issues and the casinos were definitely packed. Am a local and am super excited for next year!🎉🎉
I'm not sure what it was but it lacked something somewhere
The race itself will be better next year but the creepy hype before... meh. They should give those businesses some type of compensation out of what the city makes on the race.
I think they should build a dedicated track. Enough with street circuits
I’m glad the race was good but I still don’t care for the sideshow nonsense. As an American, I find all of this unrelated stuff very cringe.
…..replacing Monico . That’s where you lost me.
Sneakin in the ads! 😂
Vegaspaulyc has the most depressing living room I have seen. Matches his face
I wonder if they could learn anything from the aussie street circuits as in set up and pack downs, i know you cant please everyone🤷♂️
Excellent news
There is a new theme emerging in the US where people try to bring down amd shit on anything that might be positive
Boring? Monaco qualifying was the best of the year. It's driver vs track and it's unique. I honestly never want to see it leave the calendar.
I watch quali and race and that's it everything else is just a waste of time and so on that note las vegas gp was great to watch.
The racing, the sport part, seemed very good.
on track racing was good, everything else was very poor.
Vegas was very lucky the race was a success
As someone who worked the event, I hope it goes on longer than 10 years!
Success? Yes!
...of course making money is the ONLY measure of success in F1...moral bankruptcy be damned.
I really liked the Vegas race. The TV footage was amazing. Really amazing camera angles.
Drive whys or the show (sorry it's not correct Aussies)
Also that gas station wasnt down $2mil lol. Small business owners in america are the biggest grifters youll ever meet.
All that money, and guess what, people still living in the tunnels under the streets
That has nothing to do with F1
