Fun fact: the cat wasn’t supposed to be in this scene. He was a “set cat,” belonged to one of the cameramen or something. But Brando had a way with animals, and the cat absolutely adored him, and just jumped on his lap right before they shot the scene. It was so natural and pure, they decided to just let it be.

It's brilliant because it shows what the true currency of underworld dealings is; favours, and connections. Money is useful, yes, but of FAR greater value is having people in important places that you can bend to your will. Vito Corleone was clearly uninterested (and almost insulted) by the constant offers of money. What he REALLY wanted was to have another "follower", another servant that could do his bidding. Because once you've entangled that person in the web of organized crime, it's very, very difficult to escape from. Now that you have something you can hold over their heads as leverage, it becomes ever easier to draw them deeper into your web until they're so enmeshed in the underworld that they cannot escape again.

As Don Corleone calmly explains his idea of “friendship” to the undertaker Bonasera, the first nearly full-body shot of the don reveals an unexpected guest: a gray and white cat sitting in Marlon Brando’s lap. “The cat in Marlon’s hands was not planned for,” director Francis Ford Coppola said later. “I saw the cat running around the studio, and took it and put it in his hands without a word.” Brando apparently loved children and animals, and it became part of the scene. But it also nearly ruined the shot. When the sound crew listened to Brando’s dialogue, they couldn’t understand a word he was saying and feared they would have to use subtitles. The problem wasn’t Brando but the cat, whose purring wrecked the sound. You can still hear it on the sound track.

He wanted to be able to say that he was ordering a killing 'for justice', on behalf of 'a friend'. To be a hired killer for money is crass, and kind of modern. To be the one who metes out justice for friends is noble, like an aristocrat in the Renaissance. That image and identity, as an Old World nobleman, can ease his conscience, even though he really is just a criminal.

The cat was the street boss all along. Don Vito was just the public head of the Corleone family. The milk bootlegging, the nip trade, the city-wide hits on dogs, it all makes sense now.

+cyberwolfy37 I think you're reading way too much into this scene. Vito Corleone is an old time mobster boss who fancies himself a man of honor. He is considered a nobleman and demands respect in the form of total subservience from his underlings....he is the master of all he surveys within his fiefdom. In another words he's a wannabe king Godfather 1 and 2 is one of the best (argueably the best ) movie of all time but it's pure entertainment. If it shows anything it's the evil and sheer hypocrisy of life in the mafia. With all it's rules and code of honor it's members are just common thieves and murderers. Not anyone you'd want as a next door neighbor.

One of the best scenes in all of cinema. The Don gives no loyalty to country or political party. He has no faith in the government or the courts of law. He is fiercely and violently loyal to his family and friends. He abides by a code of ethics. In many ways he has effectively declared himself independent of the government. He looks for no handouts from the government, and he assumes full responsibility for himself, his family, and his friends. This includes the responsibility to wage war if or when necessary. He is ruthless, but not arbitrary. The punishment must fit the crime. He is loyal to his friends, and he expects his friends to be loyal to him. Those who betray are traitors, and traitors are to be put to death. In his own way, he is a dedicated businessman, a politician, a judge, a soldier, a husband, and a father. He provides. He protects. All he asks is for your respect, your loyalty, and your friendship.

+Dan Hillman Well...yes and no. The problem is Hollywood glorifies characters like this when in reality they are thieves, liars and murderers. In the book Vito "ain't so nice" as it goes into more of his activities. Michael shares with Kay at the wedding how his father was willing to splatter a band leaders brains if he didn't let Johnny Fontane out of a performance contract, the details of which were never told and be they unfavorable to Fontaine is irrelevant that's MURDER and the "punishment does NOT fit the crime"! It simply could have stated Fontane finish his dated performance obligations. Ironic you wrote "The Don Protects" ..as the 'Protection Racket' (aka EXTORTION) is the Mafias MAIN source of income. "Mr. small busy owner if you don't pay us $1,000 a month you may get hurt or your business may ACCIDENTALLY burn down", thievery via intimidation upon barely making business owners; seems to me the ABSENCE of ethics entirely. Young Vito kills Don Fannuci in his apartment so he and his friends no longer have to pay him "protection"...do you think Vito suddenly put an END to the "protection racket" after he killed him? F-NO! Vito just took it over. Lastly and most grotesquely when Tom goes to "fix" the situation in Part 2 involving the Senator and dead prostitute at their operated whorehouse, that girl's death was NO ACCIDENT! she was violently murdered (see blood splatter) orchestrated by Tom and his henchmen (fully sanctioned by Michael) in order to FRAME the Senator for assistance at Michael's trial! While Tom is consoling the Senator telling him "they will take care of it..this girl had no family..nobody knows she's even here"..etc..how would Tom know all this so suddenly? "Not Arbitrary" you wrote..seemingly unless it comes to SELF PRESERVATION then they murder young girls. Now i know this was Michael not Vito...but the apple doesn't fall far from the tree (see above). Sorry for rant..i enjoy mafia films and loved The Soprano's etc.. but I'd NEVER put these men on a pedestal and call them "Honorable" for they are the absence of!

It was only a movie. I don't actually believe that the Corleone characters are just and virtuous characters. What made the movies interesting and fascinating is that you could at least see on some level that the Corleones had some sense of ethics, honor, and decency. Were they hypocrites? Yes... but who isn't? I loved the first scene of the first movie. The Don refuses to perform murder for money - claiming, "That is not justice; your daughter is alive."
Of course, it was just a movie - a fictional story - that has little - if any - basis in reality. Vito is portrayed as a family man - playing with his grandson on the day of his death. In reality, I don't think for a second that people who get involved in organized crime are so committed to family and family values. But that's what made the story so fun. Vito barely escapes from Sicily with his life as a young kid after his father, brother, and mother are murdered. He marries a woman in America and then he confronts and kills Don Fannuci - freeing an entire community from extortion. And he wanted to spare Michael from ever going into the family business. Was he a hypocrite? Absolutely. As Michael said, "My father is no different from any important man who is responsible for other people - like a senator." In the history of our nation, the vast majority of politicians have been corrupt and hypocritical. This is not so much a defense of Vito as it is an indictment on our elected officials.

this book and the movie,;they are a parabola. is it ok when a police officer kills sombody? is it ok, when a president leads a country to war? this vito corleone charakter could probably not exist in real life. but the book is full of philosophy. like this scene. good people, as you call it, just let others do their dirty work. if you realy understand the movie, you see that its a story told beyond good and evil. he is who he is, and the world is violent. killing is killing, weather done for duty, profit or fun. and when you decide to protect youreself, you cant ever show a weakness. and everything, every country, every law, was built by men who refused to follow the rule of others. and often the biggest moralists were the cruelest people. to be, or not to be, that is the question.
