it will be easy topping the first sonic movie, this movie has the advantage of actually being a movie about the titular character and his world, sonic 1 was just a road trip movie featuring sonic and robotnik.
The RPGs usually give everyone a good amount of character, except maybe Mario himself getting a very small amount of character in the M&L series when compared to everyone else. In the RPGs, Bowsers is usually played as a comedic villain, if he isn't second fiddle to the main villains and played for a joke. It will be nice to see a non-comedic (outside of snark) Bowser with much larger speaking role, especially with this level of animation. Also, Bowser did have one speaking role in a mainline Mario game in Sunshine. You just have to reach the final boss.
Yeah! I think it's a little too subtle, but it's what I was hoping they would do. Would be nice if he leaned into it a bit more. Maybe he does in the rest of the movie.
Funny enough, Nintendo wanted Mario to sound like that before Charles Martinet went a different approach for him in the games back then. If Charles did voice Mario in the film, I think it would grow old and annoying really quick and to be honest I like Chris Pratt voicing Mario. It gives me super Mario super show vibes in a good way
This video describes exactly what I’ve been thinking. It won’t be a mind-blowing movie, but it’ll still be good. They’re going to play it safe, because Nintendo really doesn’t want another bad Mario movie that everyone will make fun of for decades. Hopefully Nintendo Studios will eventually take some risks with some of their other properties. But the Mario franchise has to be as safe as possible, because he’s literally the most iconic video game character ever.
I dunno, man. Taking the Penguins from ‘64 and making them a civilization doesn’t sound like playing it safe. It sounds like they’re taking the best possible creative liberties that still intertwine with what makes sense for Mario. I mean, a FLOATING LAVA ISLAND instead of the typical Bowser castle/ airship? Ya see what I mean?
I mean illumination did confirmed that they are gonna take risks in their future films ruclips.net/video/-qvDuj0uuug/видео.html So I don’t think this film is gonna play it safe
You perfectly expressed how I felt about this trailer. I'm not sure if this safe-played approach was the best choice, but I sure am ready to see where it goes!
What you call "playing it safe" many of us call "being faithful and respectful to the source material" and it is EXACTLY what we need SO much more of right now in a time where every director under the sun thinks every adaptation is their chance to "reimagine" the property as they see fit - and the results are almost always terrible whenever you hear the words "reimagined for a modern audience" or something similar. Almost ALWAYS. They're terrible because they completely throw out what made the original thing work in the first place- which is often a nuanced combination of very specific themes and aesthetics and even just a general FEELING it has to it - and that's completely lost on all too many directors taking a job for the payday and not for the love of the thing they are adapting. You want "not playing it safe" and "taking risks", there's always the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie with Bob Hoskins. THAT took plenty of risks and a lot of people really, really didn't like it. When you have a world and the built-in aesthetics and these characters that have been defined for the last 40 years, it's really a bad idea to do the "I'm trying something new and cool that I think fans will really like" routine. Fans DON'T want that. They don't WANT "updates for the 2022 sensibilities". Fans want EXACTLY what Mario is only in movie form. Now, that's not to say that BEING faithful limits you. It REALLY doesn't. You can have the exact perfect design, world building, voices, ALL of it just like the games and EXPAND on that world WITHIN THE LOGIC AND RULES ESTABLISHED FOR THAT WORLD. For instance, you know you have koopas and these penguins and the magic stars and right away you see that you can script something in where Bowser wants the stars to himself because they grant him some power he's after and the penguin city holds the last one. That's EXACTLY what you get in this trailer. That wasn't in the games - but the individual elements in it WERE - they just TOOK those elements and did some world building with them. THAT'S THE KEY. You take what IS established and within those parameters you can get as creative as you want - say Bowser COLLECTED the stars and used them to banish Mario from the Mushroom kingdom by some magic spell cooked up by magikoopa - Mario is sent elsewhere, loses his memory, and is no longer a thorn in Bowser's side. Luigi then FINDS Mario and convinces him to jump into a pipe which brings him back, but the two get separated because it turns out pipes can sometimes warp you to some other part of the world. Then you end up with Mario going, as in the trailer, "what is this place", using some weird voice because the spell tricked him into thinking he was some other guy - and there you have it. The drybones escape scene could be where Luigi comes back into Mushroom Kingdom - he pops up in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up getting chased by them, hence THAT scene. See, that's how you do it. You can GET risky - within the logic and aesthetic of the world. Mario has gone to space and beyond in the games so there is a WEALTH of possibilities to draw from and plenty to build, and none of it has to be done in a way that is unfaithful or disrespectful to the source material. So I'm VERY thankful for Nintendo watching over their baby during production. It clearly helped. This looks FAR more enjoyable than Sonic - even after the re-tooling of the Sonic design. THOSE were the "just ok, but ultimately forgettable" types of movie.
"Safe" in brand protection, more than anything I mean. I made that video on the fly so I didn't get into it too much, but Nintendo has been very careful about how it guards its IP in the last two decades, so they're being "safe" by not straying too far. This creates some creative limitations, but it doesn't mean its bad, as it creates different creative opportunities. However, it also means that it'll be judged MORE harshly in some ways. Sonic wasn't ever trying to be "faithful" to the source material, as you put it, so when it wasn't nobody was surprised. Mario has drawn the line that it will be, so when it gets things "wrong" it might get a harsher reaction. It's just super interesting how this different approach creates a different set of risks.
@@seaniccus I am personally happy that they are making this movie to be faithful to the Mario franchise instead of it being just another « insert random video game character » but with real humans movie.
Well we’re already off to a better start than Sonic. Ahem. The trailer 1 incident. Although I like to see Sonic 2 as the one and only Sonic Movie. I just kinda forgot about the first one.
I'm saying this now. That movie is not Beating the sonic movie in any way. Neither of them. Not saying it's going to be bad btw. The story to be honest is already pretty straight forward and predictable. Bowser's gonna Capture peach and Mario will end up having to rescue her. And also there doesn't seem to be anything new in the Movie besides the slight Different character design for Mario, and some other characters. There's nothing really differentiating it from the Video games other than it being called "The super Mario bros movie." It's basically just the game with no gameplay and Just CGI cutscenes with Characters who rarely even speak in voice lines, besides grunt noises. With Such an Incredibly different path than the games, Illumination will have to try their Damnedest not to make the movie seem Generic, mediocre, and a Bland mess with Mario Characters involved. The movie might be good, it might not be. But considering that this is the Mario franchise, it's gonna be a challenge for the writers to give the characters a personality, and a significant place in the story; that doesn't heavily stray from the Template set for these characters just to make them seem Funny and more relatable to the audience; like having Mario floss or some stupid Fortnite dance (I know sonic flossed in his movie but It didn't really seem all that off-putting considering that he's still a kid and it aligned pretty well with his character.) But even though the mario movie looks good, it's just not for my Taste, It's 'supposed' to appeal to all ages but this is Mario come on. I hope there will be some kind of epic final battle, like in both the sonic movies or Some epic stuff like Bowser scorching that entire ice kingdom with his fire breath, that was kinda cool. Then maybe I'd watch it.

I think this is going to be great!! Because it's keeping it authentic and not trying to be bring Super Mario Bros. into the real world. Detective Pikachu and The Sonic films are literally the best video game adaptations I've ever seen. When has there ever been a good movie based on a video game in the past? I know someone is going to argue with me, but video game based films are usually 🗑️!!!
Super Mario doesn’t work in the real world, I’d rather see Mario in that world than some out of his element setting. That’s why the old one didn’t work.
I'm fully expecting this to just be a comfort popcorn movie. The kind that I just watch and can grin at seeing my favorite characters around. I've got my hopes up that they'll be a little more adventurous with the story, but im scared that the story is going to be the same that we get with other illumination movies. i will say that the movie animation is looking really great though.
It seems like the movie will go with Mario entering the mushroom kingdom for the first time and bowser kidnaps peach if the movie does well I would love to see either an original plot or one based of one of the games doubt they would but the rpgs could make for an interesting movie plot
I thought his accent sounded more like a Brooklyn accent than Italian. Which would be a return to how everyone played Mario before Charles Martinet (just less gravelly). And it's not too unreasonable to let the iconic Mario voice remain something that Charles Martinet does. I'm not sure why, but I feel like Pratt COULD do a pretty decent impression of Martinet if he tried to. But I get that it's probably hard to carry a movie while affecting such a squeaky voice, especially considering Pratt is not a voice actor.
Me too! This was kind of just done on the fly. I'd like to make more time to do videos more often. Though yeah I haven't had a "series" to follow since Ducktales. Hesitant to do a project that covers every aspect of a single thing again like that. We'll see.
@@seaniccus You maybe don't have to be that in-depth in whatever series you may start next. I know how much you were killing yourself near the end of it.
The main thing I'm blown away by is the animation it actually looks good! Which is surprising because compared to the other movies that illumination has made which let's face it. Look completely generic and low quality, seeing this high Budget film that actually has the game elements in there is amazing!
(imagines hearing voices of a certain Harvey Atkin (for a certain character named "Bowser Koopa") and a certain Louis (Lou) Albano (for a certain character named "Mario Mario") while viewing this video; prefers hearing those voices over certain characters in this video instead the ones over those very characters in this very video*) (*note: no offense was intended by the preferences mentioned earlier in this message)
I say it depends on the franchise and production, doesn't need animosity with Sonic's movies, enjoy, watch and relax. Rinse and repeat. Yes they're rivals but good friends too.
Glad to see one of your videos...been a while since your ducktales reviews...was pleasantly surprised when I got the notification and couldn't wait to watch it.
Of course. Another pointless Mario Vs. Sonic debate that delusional fanboys have to put out whenever something new happens from both any of these franchises. A complete waste of time just to gain views.
nothing wrong with playing it "safe" when there's such an absolutely huge amount to draw on. as you stated there's decades of history to try to keep accurate. as a first try movie I hope it will be solid enough for them to explore a bit in later movies.
Yeah there really is a lot for them to do, even "restricting" themselves to an existing version of the game lore. It isn't to say that this kind of "safe" isn't better either -- but it presents a different challenge. Everybody knew Sonic wasn't going to be 'game accurate' at the outset so it was easy to forgive it not being 'right.' Mario is clearly trying to represent the game lore more directly, so it will face harsher judgement for what it gets "wrong" But i bet they'll get it right enough to make most people happy
Animation: 10/10 Voice Acting: Kevin Richardson nails it as Kamek. Jack Black does an great impression at capturing Bowser's gravitas and Keegan-Michael Key manages to get Toad's 'raspy squeal' without making it ear grating (a magnificent feat in and of itself). Chris Pratt as Mario though... I think we can all say that's an absolute miss. It just sounds like Chris Pratt. I've seen three solid suggestions for better actors to voice Mario; Robert De Niro, (famous actor, strong voice, actually of Italian descent so he could do a better accent), Danny DeVito (another famous actor, an iconic voice if not the best fit for Mario but still better than Chris, and also of Italian descent so he could make it work), finally, Charles Martinet (you know... the ACTUAL voice actor for Mario?)

Great to watch again!~ Been a while since Ducktales,
I'm fully expecting this to just be a comfort popcorn movie. The kind that I just watch and can grin at seeing my favorite characters around. I definitely feel like they are playing it safer than the sonic movie, but honestly the sonic movie while having different elements didn't do anything groundbreaking either. I enjoyed your analysis, and am always happy to see a video of yours on my feed.
Hope life has been treating you well
Like hilda?
@@WakerOfTheSky Hilda actually has a lot of complex themes to it, such as care about the natural beauty of the world. Consideration for those who are different Around you, and kindness before cruelty. I don't really expect much complexity from the mario movie
Nice to hear from you again. Don’t be a stranger.
This is a controversial opinion of mine, but i do believe animation is more of an artform then live action, i know a lot of work and talent goes into live action's effects but something about animation just makes it "better" to me, i guess regular old humans are just sorta bland to me?
regardless, i think this looks fun, im gonna go see it, i have way more interest in this movie then detective pikachu or sonic, Personally i hope we get to see some Super smash style fighting with this Bowser, i think that would be amazing :D
lol that's not even controversial, animation is way more expressive and flexible than live action
people want to see Mario as...well Mario lol, and animation is the best way to go about that.
I'm pleasantly surprised by the trailer and man Jack Black has range to pull off Bowser here.
Fire Emblem The Movie
Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures Japan
This trailer needs some more Bob Hoskins.
No!!!!!
Man I forgot how fun your videos are man.
truly epic
There is a such thing as being too much safe. Right ? I mean what if this upcoming Mario film plays it too much safe ?
I got an idea do a video series of Amphibia or even the owl house please I just want to see more video from you again like you used to with the DuckTales videos
I've got my hopes up that they'll be a little more adventurous with the story, but im scared that the story is going to be the same that we get with other illumination movies. i will say that the movie animation is looking really great though.
I think they taking the wizard of oz approach
It seems like the movie will go with Mario entering the mushroom kingdom for the first time and bowser kidnaps peach if the movie does well I would love to see either an original plot or one based of one of the games doubt they would but the rpgs could make for an interesting movie plot
Firstly, bowser comeback with jr and Wendy roy...
Then maybe
I think he is going for stars not the princess
"A fun romp with no big risks." If that doesn't sum up Illumination's whole catalog perfectly.

Welcome back, Sean! We haven't seen you much since Duck Tales ended. Hope to see more videos from you soon.
(imagines hearing voices of a certain Harvey Atkin (for a certain character named "Bowser Koopa") and a certain Louis (Lou) Albano (for a certain character named "Mario Mario") while viewing this video; prefers hearing those voices over certain characters in this video instead the ones over those very characters in this very video*)
(*note: no offense was intended by the preferences mentioned earlier in this message)
I say it depends on the franchise and production, doesn't need animosity with Sonic's movies, enjoy, watch and relax. Rinse and repeat. Yes they're rivals but good friends too.
I'm quite optimistic the movie will be good so I can't wait to watch it. Also I think Chris Pratt sounds pretty ok as Mario
Hi!
CHI VINCERÀ? Bho hahaha
Mario’s movie will be better
No bro , sonic is the god of all game movies
@@BoltBaconYT detective Pikachu: Are you sure about that?
Reviews say sonic was better then detective pikachu
Shut up bro no it won’t
@@thegamerdog1354 lmao the box office will speak for itself
You can’t compare the two movies until the Mario movie comes out
That is 100% Chris Pratt don’t kid yourself. Also this is and always has been nothing more then an Isekai.
? What and how
nothing wrong with playing it "safe" when there's such an absolutely huge amount to draw on. as you stated there's decades of history to try to keep accurate. as a first try movie I hope it will be solid enough for them to explore a bit in later movies.
Yeah there really is a lot for them to do, even "restricting" themselves to an existing version of the game lore.
It isn't to say that this kind of "safe" isn't better either -- but it presents a different challenge.
Everybody knew Sonic wasn't going to be 'game accurate' at the outset so it was easy to forgive it not being 'right.' Mario is clearly trying to represent the game lore more directly, so it will face harsher judgement for what it gets "wrong"
But i bet they'll get it right enough to make most people happy
Your alive!!!
This movie will suck
Prejudice, that's a bad thing you're doing.
Holy crap, a Seaniccus video!
(suggestion: no vulgar language)
Sonic 2 didn’t take any risks. All of the things Sonic went through that is actually even worth talking about happened in the games.
Animation: 10/10
Voice Acting: Kevin Richardson nails it as Kamek.
I've seen three solid suggestions for better actors to voice Mario; Robert De Niro, (famous actor, strong voice, actually of Italian descent so he could do a better accent), Danny DeVito (another famous actor, an iconic voice if not the best fit for Mario but still better than Chris, and also of Italian descent so he could make it work), finally, Charles Martinet (you know... the ACTUAL voice actor for Mario?)
im not trying to be mean but it look cool but i think the live action sonic movie looks like the same universe as terrible bad 1993 super mario bros movie
Sonic is a strong hedgehog and Mario but man I can say that sonic his durability is Low but I Think that sonic will win the Battle because I still love sonic is still my favorite and cool I Bet that sonic will win
New story? The fuck?Sonic 2 is a copy of Sonic 2 and 3&Knuckles story. It’s not new. Sonic 1 is a generic buddy cop movie. It’s not original by any means.
Dude don’t know sonic
@@thesonicking6067 I know Sonic more than you do. Facts.
@@thesonicking6067 Sonic 1 is very bland and Sonic 2 is even worse!!! They’re like Disney style Live action demakes of the original trilogy. If the genesis games are the original trilogy then Sonic 1 and 2 are the sequel trilogy but, as 2 movies.
@@crashban4t.f.s.b783 bro I wasn’t talking about you I was agreeing with you I was talking about the dude reviewing this and boy you don’t know more than me been a sonic fan since I was born and obsessed til this day so go somewhere and don’t start stuff Ik everything sonic even read every single comic and have every sonic figure get real even got all the games and consoles and how dare you call the movies bad they fantasic the 2 movies so far are based off of the genesis games but with a twist that plays it out well so it’s a bit different but taking elements from those games and part three will be sa2
@@crashban4t.f.s.b783 they also got there own origin and story but it plays similar to the elements from the original games
I watched the sonic and pikachu movies but wasn't too impressed...probably because they were taken out of their elements and brought into the human world...I think having Mario in the Mario world is the right decision...though I hope the story/movie is more compelling and not just another bland but not terrible adaption.
um sonic has been in the human world multiple times :/
