    you are so lucky been able to work on this show so incredibly amazing and complicated as you know

      yes, rather complex! In terms of keys - there's 4 keyboards, all of which were running the original broadway keyboard patches (with some local modifications) which we were fortunate enough to be sent. Keyboards were hired as the original patches were made specifically for that model. Good part about that was no computers or Mainstage required with the exception of a couple of very specific patches.

    Does the orchestra tour with the touring production of Wicked, or does the show use a new orchestra in each city?

    • @RonaldAtkinson9
      @RonaldAtkinson9 4 года назад +2

      Both! There's a touring group that travels with the Wicked cast and crew, and in each city, they invite 9 extra local musicians to play with them.

      No, I saw it in Richmond and there were only 9 guys (half locals and out of tune) in the pit playing with a recording and tons of sythn.

      the orchestra usually travels with the show. so the orchestra gets used to a surtain show...

    Do you know why there's so many keys in a pit?

    • @CBeaumontHIGTFY
      @CBeaumontHIGTFY 6 лет назад +4

      Purely because they provide more sound flexibility. As much as it would be amazing to have everything on a 'live' instrument, the pits are not large enough and even if they were, the money isn't there, alas! Keyboards are great in that they are able to be played by working musicians, yet produce so many different sounds which - if the programmers do a good job which can happen - sound realistic. There are some rubbish keyboard sounds out there, but there are some genuine ones as well.

      the touring version calls for 4 keys. The percussion part is also massive, which may require more keys. The original version in Broadway calls for only 3 keys, but more live instruments (23 players, as opposed to 17 players here)

      The additional keys serve as the "ensemble fill" to make up for the reduced number of orchestral players.

      Actually it is purely financial more than it is about pit size, while that can occasionally be a factor. Most non Broadway houses are smaller and even with a hefty ticket price you have to make ends meet with fewer seats. The music department is the first place reductions happen. When it comes to tours why shell out the bucks for a string section of 13 when 4 and a keyboard will do? You travel with your core musicians (conductor +4-6 others in the rhythm and 1st brass chairs), hire union locals for the rest.

      correct. The arkaos AV/projection was also triggered from the lighting console. Audio main console is a Digico SD8 (60 channels), with another digital sub console for extra channels.. can't recall which one that was.

      Sub Console is a Yamaha QL1

    It would have been great to hear these guys play! Unfortunately, I saw the show in Richmond and it sounded horrible. Only 9 people in the pit, all I heard was synth and vocal in the house. I know all these guys were mostly laid off due to union rules so there were local musicians in pit (they clearly didn't understand the Broadway style of playing). But they were way out of tune! I guess the FOH engineer didn't hear it (or was tone deaf)and kept their mics pretty hot, which made me cringe most of the second act. As a union musician, I felt ripped off at $175 a ticket. As a patron I felt ripped off because it sounded so bad.
