Is this one of the best value studio flash units currently available? In this video I test out the Godox MS300, giving you a run through of the features and my first impressions after using it in a simple studio portrait session. At only $109 USD ($179AUD), this flash packs some serious features and build quality for such a small price.

A lot of great info about this flash in your video. Most other reviews on this unit are all spec. Also, 100% of your video is about the flash. The simple and straightforward shoot was great, as you are the first I have seen actually using the flash. The last bit of demo where you used it at it's highest power and shared your aperture and compared it to your lowest power settings was very valuable. Thank for making this.

Fun fact: I have been able to fire these at up to my camera's max shutter speed of 1/8000s using the X1 trigger. No curtain issues. I thought it was a fluke but it's not. Brilliant lights, these!
What camera did you use? I've heard that it has HSS but none of the reviewers on youtube ever mention that. Some say the HSS doesn't work with certain camera brand.

Right around the minute Cam says "the modeling lights are easily replaceable." I highly recommend doing just that, with LEDs. I got a nice set of four LEDs for around USD$15 that provide a nice bright modeling light and stay super cool.

@@Isaypreach These are the ones I use. They cost a little bit more, but they are extremely low profile which I really like. EmeryAllen EA-E26-5.0W-001-309F-D JA8 Compliant Dimmable Medium Base LED Fan Light Bulb, 120V-5Watt (60W Equivalent) 550 Lumens, 3000K

Great write up. There's actually a button that can be pressed in on the handle screw for smooth adjustment while tiling the unit up and down.

Thanks Russell. I'm actually not sure of the brand of that light stand. It's about 15 years old and doesn't have a brand name on it. It's pretty similar to a Manfrotto 004 stand in height etc.

Hi, thanks for the video. Have you tried it with super fast shutter speed ? I have pain to understand if this unit supports HSS (even though sometimes godox doesn’t communicate on that, some of there products support HSS)

I have existing flash brollies that don't appear to fit into the unit. Do I have to purchase a specific Godex brolly?
Avoid using your bare fingers to remove or replace the lightbulb. Just a friendly suggestion.

This is the best review for the Godox MS300. Which light stand did you use? Will an Amazon Basics light stand be strong enough to hold the M300 with a 43" modifier?

When you say heavy modifier, do you mean a 4ft (120cm) softbox hanging from the ceiling?
What would be the maximum size softbox we could use with this strobe?
It would really depend on the weight of the soft box rather than it's size. You shouldn't have too much trouble with something around 4ft / 120cm.

i'm on a budget as an ameatur. I'm trying to take headshot portrait for my classmates CV. Do I need a transmitter (extra $50-60) or are there other ways to just use strobe + camera (without other equipment)
You can use this light on outdoor or its only indoors

Anything with a baby pin works, and you can add one to all sorts of stands (even tripods) if needed.
can I use this outdoors with the Vagabond Mini?

I've used them. They are very good with a slightly better recycle time at 1/1, but are double the size and weight, and only go down to 1/16 power which is why I moved to the MS series which will do 1/32. In actual usage, there should be very little difference in most situations.
Hello . Would you still be able to take such good photos using one speedlight instead of this ? What im trying to say is it worth upgrading from using one speedlight for indoors use only to the ms300 ?
It is possible but for such a cheap price, you are getting a lot more power and the added benefit of a modelling light.
If you pro, for you doesnt mater light! You can make perfect photo with packet flashlight. Good video. Subscribe!

Did you replace the modelling lamp with white LED light as MS 300 comes with tungsten modelling lamp?
Hi Femy. No, the modelling lamp hasn't been replaced. That is the original tungsten modelling lamp that was supplied with the MS300.
@@CamAttreePhoto are there any bulbs you can reccommend in place for the one that comes with the ms300. my modeling lamp is too long for one of my softboxes

I change the incandescent modeling lamp with a Led one. The original one generated so much heat

I heard the modeling light gets very hot and within minutes, did you experience that?
I used the modeling light for taking portraits of my parents and had it on the whole time I did not have an overheating issue. It’s a light so it will get hot but nothing to the point where it would cause a fire. I suppose anything is possible but I didn’t have that issue.
I haven't noticed it being any hotter than any other tungsten modelling light Michael.
I tripped the breaker with mine using 5x strobes, so I went to LED bulbs to prevent this.

Or use a Nikon d810/ d 850 and shoot at 64 iso.....

i got the ms200 v and it uses led which produces white modeling light
just ordered the ms200 v, i chose it because the modeling light is now led🩷
