Is it a bad thing that I am totally obsessed with the sound of the Rhodes? It's been that way for many, many years. You nailed this one perfectly. The Rhodes tone is definitely a slice of heaven.
Add a 68 yr old fan in there too who's also a big fan of young James (Shawcross) as well. Have really enjoyed following this young man & have much respect for him. Need more young people like him in the world of music today instead of those who are so highly promoted commercially!
I've seen ray play this in person 7 times in various cities..a couple times in the front row....stil crank this while driving every time I hear it...an iconic keyboard solo forever
Great job, a great song and a fabulous musician playing it. James, you are so specially gifted, I am always amazed at what you can do from memory. I love the sound of your Fender. Thank you for your performances, they are absolutely terrific!!!

I can't afford a Rhodes, and I just play some chords over my midi keyboard (I know some music theory since I've been playing guitar for some years). It is just an emulation, not the real thing, but oh my... I love that sound. I think the Rhodes has the best sound ever! I hope I can have piano lessons next year and start learning :))
From one keyboard player to another - outstanding! My first real keyboard was a 78 Rhodes and all these years later I wish I kept it. Today's samples are OK but nothing like the real thing. Thank you for posting this.
Excellent performance my friend, souful and subtle. I'm a guitar player, but just like you I love 70s sound, Maestro phaser and stuff for my guitar, so hand to hand with the Rhodes' sound. It's a nice thing that young people, like you, are bringing back these astounding and unique sounds from said era, props to you.
Great performance, JPS. The Rhodes has a distinctive sound and I definitely agree with you: some songs played on a Rhodes will not sound the same played on any other instrument.
Amazing Can't even imagine how much work it was to not only learn all the piano parts, but also transcribing the guitar parts and vocals for it as well
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I am so glad you agreed with those who requested you play the whole song. While I am not a Doors expert in any way, I have heard ROTS enough times to know you have it down perfect. I was waiting to hear thunder in the background.
I will always consider this a classic rock, jazz, blues blend for sure. Everyone who loves this song as much as I do should always remember it could only have been written by The Doors.
Ray was a true magician on keys. Lord was with classic taste, Emerson was with progressive vibes, but only Ray was with those dark jazz vibes... Rip mr. Manzarek, bloody master.
Thanks for bringing me here James!.Superb playing. And definitely it's a challenge playing something meant for something else, but here you were splendid. :) I can now imagine that video of a cat on the hood sitting proudly while the car is cruising like a boss.
Credit where credit is due. I'm learning this even though it's above my level and this is my 'go to' video for this. I've watched this so many times and will keep referring back to this throughout my progress. Brilliant!
Yeah, i like that cover bro ! good work. Interesting note too, For those that dont know, the Doors never had a bass player, their bass sound all came from the keyboard.
You really are a great musician! I am a pianist too, and it is amazing to hear that old, bluesy, nostalgic organ sound! I like pianist like Alan Price, Mike Carr, and so on. This organ gives a great sound! I have no way how to explain it. Is it really from 1973!? Unbelievable how it looks and sounds!! 😲
Yes, this is from 1973! All original, too, aside from a few capacitors. The Rhodes is actually a type of keyboard, with an amplifier and speaker cabinet below.
Wow that was amazing. Maybe the best thing I've seen you do. You really showed your mastery of the keyboard and music. (I wanted the tempo just a touch slower though). Did you get the original music or did you just figure it all out by ear? The ending was so perfect. Those high notes on the fender rhodes are the really iconic sound that proves you are right, they couldn't have got that sound on any other keyboard. Now I want to hear you play it with your band in the recording studio - looking forward to that video in the future.
I had to figure out the solos by ear, my official Doors anthology book doesn't have them for some reason. If you can find me a vocalist who sounds like Jim Morrison, I will record a first-class cover of the song with vocals and all the instruments!
@@ThePianoforever nice thank you for replying so quickly! Also, what mics did you use? Not like specific brand (if you had that it would be cool), but was it a ribbon, large diaphragm, small diaphragm, etc?
I don't remember the specific details, but large diaphragm would always be best for recording a speaker. If I was recording it today I would use two U87's three inches from the speaker off set from the center of the cone.
No he's just pressing lightly with the left hand , the rhodes works like a piano it has hammers that strike metal plates and the sound is licked up by pickups like a guitar kinda so the harder you hit it the more noise it's gonna make
Oh man, one of my favourite songs from back in the day, performed expertly, and with great soul. Am I wrong to think that this is really more jazz than rock? Made my day. I'm looking forward to your version with other instruments included. How will you do that? Overdubbing? Or do you have a band?
I could do anything only for playing a fender rhodes😍 can you play something of the rooftop concert of the beatles where billy preston played a fender rhodes please??
Greetings James: "hopefully you liked it" you asked; yes sir!, that was a very fine performance, your careful, gentle touch really paid dividends upon your Fender Rhodes, you could tell you had spent a good time learning that, you could hear it. Many thanks to you, i shall remember that gentle performance. Kind regards Simon. PS: was it Dorian ?
In my opinion, the Fender Rhodes is one of the most beautiful sounding electronic instruments in the world and that cover was fantastic too.
A sound that has never been duplicated. I love my Fender Rhodes.
+1
Totally agree- amazing sound
Yep it has a fantastic sound. Love it. Technology can lose vital strengths and substance.
One of the most sounding instrument ! But the sound is generated mechanically ;) not by an Electronic process
The instrument is beautiful like its sound
It's like a 70s car interior
Is it a bad thing that I am totally obsessed with the sound of the Rhodes? It's been that way for many, many years. You nailed this one perfectly. The Rhodes tone is definitely a slice of heaven.
Do you have your own Rhodes yet?
As a 71 year old Doors fan, I want to thank you for that great rendition of "Riders on the Storm". You have a wonderful channel.

I can hear Jim Morrison in my head when you play this. Will there ever be another voice like Jim's? I don't think so. Well-played, James!
Only one Jim Morrison.
@@ThePianoforever Only one. Only one.
One of the coolest songs ever
Your playing takes me to the another dimension whenever I close my eyes and listen.
I think this Rhodes was staying brand new waiting for you to play this. Now it can start to age. Well done, thank you very much for this opportunity.
I hope that with my help it ages gracefully and with dignity.

damn, its so beatiful for my ears, if my life got a soundtrack definetly will be this song, thanks for this masterpiece.
Just a beautiful piece. Thanks JPS. RIP RM
Your work touches the heart!
I am so glad you think it is good.
The late Ray Manzarek would approve of this cover!
Wow!! Love it. I'm trying to learn this. You're awesome.
Love this man! I remember hearing this song in Need for Speed Underground 2 on the PS2, so much nostalgia.
Snoop dog cover
Lol the first time i listened to this song was in a strip club a stripper was dancing it 😆
SAME

I could have played this on on other instruments, but......
Spectacular. Great arrangement and stellar performance!
Thank you for your kind words about my performance.
Amazing

I wanted to add that too, but thought it was better to focus on the Rhodes.
Ray would've been impressed by that performance! Brilliant!
Stellar, man, just stellar.
That was really great! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks for coming by to see what I was up to.
Wow, Pavel. Great job, tone, playing and voicing of the lyrics on the keys.

Even though I'm just a bassist, I just love the Rhodes and the Hammond... If I could start over, maybe I'd play one of those.
Wow! Great performance on a classic instrument. Good job.
You did a great job of this. Thanks for telling me about it. Very much enjoying your videos
I enjoyed this. Thanks for making this video.

Well the truth is that the Doors used a Fender Rhodes in there original recording.
Very Nice playing,James!
I hear the thunder and rain in my mind.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
I was thinking I could too.
I really enjoyed that....awesome job
That was seriously great -- well played!
SUPER. THANK YOU.
Thank you for coming by and the comment.
Wow! Incredible!
Thank you!
Just speechless dude. Ray would proud with the skill and passion you show and bring to this keyboard.
Sounds fantastic!
Thank you.
Their last recording, I think. Strong work! Took me right back. You nailed it.
It was awesome. You do that cool trill very well. I have no idea how you'd write that down in sheet music but you did it so well.
I had to do a lot of it by ear.
Awesome
Sounds AMAZING
Fantastic
It's a Match between Jim and Rhodes voices

sounded awesome.
Thank you.
That was awesome! That sounded about as close to the original as you can get. I'm still waiting for "Crystal Ship" btw.. lol
I plan on doing lots of Doors covers; with the Vox, Piano Bass, and Rhodes there's a lot of pieces I can play.
Class of 1969 says that was great. Thanks! Now can you play "Light My Fire?"
Looks fun, gotta love the Rhodes sound too! Do you have sheets for this?
It's available online.
Very good job man, amazing, peace.
Music Magic.....just like the Doors
The Rhodes were great , you are awesome playing on it!
It was a true pleasure to play.
Thank You James.
Thank you for the visit.
Beautiful. How would one replicate this sound/tone with a just a midi keyboard and a computer ?
I want a suitcase 88 so bad... I have been looking at a Yamaha cp 70 lately though.
The Rhodes 88's are nice, but they still sit on the same amp (same size).
Very well done. Thanks for sharing! :D
Thank you checking out my latest upload.

Harvey Brooks played lotsa bass on Doors tunes.
Does anyone know how he miked his Rhodes?
We recorded it with mics in the front and rear to pick up both channels.

I thought it was originally played on a vox not sure. You did a great job love the sound of a Rhodes.
They used a Vox on Light My Fire.
SO COOL! :)
Yes, everyone loves Riders on The Storm.
