  • Our crew is excited to receive Jennifer and Benjamin who come down to show us how to climb coconut trees with hunter’s tree stands. Benjamin voices his support of recent trends away from climbing spikes on boots which hurt the trees, to the more benign, tree stands. They talk a little about Benjamin’s tree business Coco Cuts, and how Jenn teams up with him to sell the extra coconuts through her network. He calls her the Coconut Slinger, and she laughs, “That’s right, the Coconut Slinger, they are beautiful extra abundance for the hard work he does and then we can share them with the community and I can get cocos for my family.”
They start with safety and show us different kinds of harnesses. Benjamin makes a point to always use a flip line and shows us how to clip one on. “Don’t climb without one,” he says. “I have had treestands fall before, so you always want to climb clipped in around the tree with your flip line.”
Jennifer demonstrates how to set up a belay system and tie off coconuts to gently lower delicate racks of young coconuts to the ground. She discusses strategies for maximum harvest and optimal tree health and then demonstrates how to coil climbing rope. She warns us about the rhinoceros beetle, this huge beetle which has been decimating local coconut populations.
Benjamin gears up and gives us a demo. He sets the tree stands and climbs up into them and uses them to inchworm his way up to the crown. He cleans dead fronds and harvests coconuts, carefully lowering down the newer more delicate racks and cut dropping the older ones.
Thanks for the lesson Folks. See you next time!
