    I was at Kice Island for my very first shelling experience with a shelling tour company 3 weeks ago. It was an 3 hr tour. We went to Dickman's Point (?) also. It was amazing. I collected over 50 Florida fighting conchs and a bunch of other shells at low tide. I could have spent all day there. It was overwhelming and amazing too. No Junonia shells but I did find a worn out alphabet cone and part of a broken one. I am addicted...Love it. Can't wait to go back. I will have to settle for Fernandina Beach which is closer to home.

      I use The Sanibel Shell Museum website, my Florida Living Beach book, my Bivalve shells book and a few other sources to ID shells. I wish there was one good resource, but it seems that like shells, it's easier to ID them when you know what region they are from.

    Hi Sharmon,
    What a beautiful afternoon on Kice.
    It's one of my favourites, so I was very glad to see that you visited the island!
    And wow, as always, Kice didn't disappoint!
    What a gorgeous shells. I really love that Rose Murex because of the spikes on it.
    As far as I know, I've never seen that before.
    And that Pitted Murex as well.... I'm in love😍
    Hopefully, there won't be so much rain this upcoming week.
    Fortunately, here in the Netherlands, finally, summer has arrived. After months and months of rain. We even broke a new rain record. 🙄
    So, summer is very welcome, with temperatures around 78.8°F. That is warm enough for us. 😅
    My cats don't like it. They lay on my bed all day, sleeping and being lazy. They go out at night when it's cooler. I can't blame them.
    The only thing is that they like to lay very close beside me, so I've got two little heaters near my legs. So I get it quite hot.
    I don't have AC. That's not common in Dutch houses.
    I only have a fan, and that's it for keeping me cool. 😅
    Well, all that beside, I hope you have a wonderful week, with no rain and lots of sunshine!
    Sending you lots of love, and, of course, a big hug, xoxo ❤, Ilona

      @SWFBeachLife  3 месяца назад +1

      I've heard almost all of Europe does not have air conditioning as well. I don't think we would be able to live here without the AC. It can get quite brutal in the middle of the day. I have 3 cats that I love spoiling when I'm not at the beach. My daughter's cat is a siamese, my husband's cat is all black, and my boy, Arnold, he's a grey tabby. My husband and I adopted kittens last September, so they are coming up on a year old. I love them to pieces! I often thought about beach training my boy, but I think it's just too hot. Stay cool beach friend!!! ❤️

    I love these shell hunts. You're a great narrater and I've learned a lot. A few years ago I bought a large round fishbowl filled with beautiful shells at an estate sale. Im in southern Utah, so no shells here. Thanks to you, I've learned the name og my shells. I think the elderly couple that passed, had spent alot of time in Florida. A couple of weeks ago, I found a box of very large, very beautiful shells for 25.00. I snapped it right up. I think some of them are scotch bonnets, but I might be wrong. I have google lens, so will see what google knows. Lol. Thanks so much!!!!@

    Ok, the quote explains a few things from earlier!😁 It's great to always live in the moment. And that rose m is really a nice specimen! I actually have 3 albinistic great A cockles. Don't look like your shell though - they're almost all white but have a hint of yellow all over. If I remember, I'll send a pic. Was the egg cockle albino? It was so white on the inside, it looked like it to me. That jasper cone was beautiful and big. Great seeing the south end of Live! Thanks Sharmon! xxoo

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 месяца назад +1

      I don't think the egg cockle was albino. I should have shown everyone - there was a sunray venus clam shell that was bleached white but still very shiny. It's funny how that happens too sometimes with these shells. I am almost done with my printer tray table! I am going to put some of these neat shells in my "special box" but some of these others will go in my table so I can look at them all day long 😃

    We were just recently on kice as well. Took a tour with swfl. Wish we had run into you. I have a question on how you clean your sand dollars? I know you use hydrogen peroxide but what ratio do you use and how long do you leave them in there?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 месяца назад

      I use 100% straight hydrogen peroxide and I tend to do it in batches. What I do is get all my sand dollars together and completely cover them with the HP in a rubbermaid container. I put a lid on the container and leave the whole container in my garage (it's darkest spot I can find). The HP will break down with light (that's why they sell it in a brown bottle) so I try to help it along and have the sand dollars soak in the dark. I check on them about a week layer and rinse them real well. Sometimes there will be stubborn ones that won't go while. Those I put to the side to paint 😃

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 месяца назад

      90% of what I find down here in SWFL are calico scallops. They are normally purple or pink, but can be white too. Bay scallops have coloring a little different, browns, yellows and they can get bigger than the calicos. Rough scallops have really cool wings (anterior wings) on the bottom of their shell. The wings on the calicos are square and the ones on the rough scallop are more tapered. I don’t always get them right either - don’t feel bad!!! 😃

    Wow that rose murex is pristine. It's so hard to find those perfect. I agree those Florida cones are hard to find in good condition, I think I only have few that aren't worn or chipped in some way. Congrats on the pitted murex and all your amazing finds, can't wait for next week!

    What happened to the trees. No green. Is this a result of past hurricane. How long till it recovers.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 месяца назад

      Florida is awesome because just about anything and everything grows here. What happens on some of these islands are trees that can't tolerate salt water are killed by high tides and drought, leaving this "ghost forest" behind. It won't recover, but the trees may in time be replaced by mangroves and other trees and bushes that can tolerate the harsh, island conditions.

    We are coming back to sanibel in February. I want to go to Kice island. We did a tour in March with sand dollar shell tours and I don’t think they go to Kice. Who would you recommend that would t break the bank?

      I was just there taking shelling tours for over a month and found Ali’s tour to be the most fun and competitively priced. Every time I went out with her on both the guided and unguided tours I came back with great shells and goodies! She knows the area and has been shelling these islands for a long time. She is also a really cool! SWFL Shell Guide highly recommend!

    Hi Sharmon. Thank you for that comment (quote) at the beginning of the video. I needed that today. It's been another tough week. But I thoroughly enjoyed the shelling video on Kice you shared with us today. Among your treasures, I especially loved that first Florida cone you found, the rose murex, the incredible hinged spiny jewel box with all the glorious purple inside. (Wish that hinge would last forever.... what a necklace that would make.) I loved the unique coloring on the beach bowl -reminded me of butterscotch morsels. The first Florida fighting conch you found was incredible too. All of it was incredible and it warmed my soul. Have a blessed week, my friend!

    I loved this trip to Kice, and the I like the different way you're shelling. So many times in past videos, I've thought to myself, "That could go on a frame for a mirror or a photo. Even if it's broken, that part could be covered by another shell." The only shell you showed today that you didn't keep that I would've kept was the shark eye, with all the cracks. Yes, it was beaten up, but that's why I liked it. Thank you for an island trip this week.

    • @SWFBeachLife

      I know the shell you mean! I could have snagged that one, but I would have wanted to paint it white for a white shell project. I have a whole bunch of "craft" shells that I don't think I'll be using, so I'm going to try to sell those to make room for better broken shells 🤣
