- Nikon D610 to be released soon. The D610 will not exhibit the dust / debris issue of the D600.
This video demonstrates cleaning the debris and dust specs from the Nikon D600 Image Sensor. Ultimately, the debris returns in the end.

Kyle, thanks for the response. Your documentation and analysis of the problem is exceptional. I think the D600 community really appreciates your contribution to determining the root cause of this issue. Thanks for your videos.
Brian, really interesting to get your insight into this issue and learn your techniques. Obviously we will all be keen to hear of any follow up by Nikon. Thanks !
I'm really sorry you, and many others, are experiencing this issue but thank you sincerely for documenting the spots on the sensor and their recurrence after tedious cleaning. I've been wanting to move into an FX body and the D600 was the obvious choice.
The D610 is about ready for a full roll out and not only do I expect this sensor spot issue to be corrected but also that Nikon would upgrade all D600 owners with this issue to the new body.
Best of luck, thanks again, and happy shooting.
You and thousands of others know plenty about this issue. It was so bad a class action suit was opened and then Nikon issued the recall. Nikon gave me such a hard time when I sent my D600 back to them before the recall. They broke it and said it was my fault and sent me a $1300 repair bill. I had to escalate it and prove to them it was a working camera before I opened the case. It was such a problem but, taking a picture after opening the case and just before shipping it to them saved me. They had to replace my D600 with a refurbished unit. Now I have a working camera with the spotting problem. I'm sending it back to them again for the one time warranty review. Wish me luck.
Good luck. Maybe upgrade to D810?
This is disgusting, Nikon seem to be a bad company, I had a new D7200 it had the same spotting, cleaned 3 times within 600 actuation's. Verdict traded in as it was crap.
This is why I've held off on buying a D600 to replace my D300. Also while I'm not happy to see are having a hard time cleaning the sensor it does make me feel better that it took me a box of swabs to learn to clean my d300 when it got especially dirty! Thanks for this.
Thanks for the review! I have to do this because I take long exposures with my D600. I tried air blowing and it wasn't enough. This helped a lot.
Thanks for sharing. I contacted Nikon Canada and arranged a free repair. They send you a prepaid shipping label in email, no questions asked. My dust off image looks much dirtier than yours. Maybe because I take a lot of time lapse.
My D600 debris has been removed by air blowing only. Guess I am lucky for that. Great video Brian
nicely put and 100% true, my d600 and ALL nikon cam/lenses ect have no issues either, keep up the good work brian.
Great to hear! I have an early one on the serial number list.
Thanks for this - a healthy dose of caveat emptor!
Some have reported that the problem "goes away" after several thousand actuations - clearly not in your case.
After much research on the issue, I find it is a historical Nikon problem.
The point is: sensor cleaning is just another technique that you need to add to your repertoire if you want to appreciate all this camera has to offer. I, for one, don't find it onerous and fully intend to purchase this (mostly) splendid machine.
Thailand. You are absolutely correct that it is a sad case for a Nikon product to have this problem. I had my D600 serviced at the L.A. facility a month ago, and they replaced the entire shutter assembly. After a few exposures, the oil debris problem came back, unfortunately, in my case I am about to go
on a vacation next week and won't be able to have the camera"repaired" or "cleaned" prior to my trip. Never in the almost 25+ years of owning a Nikon have I ever been so disappointed w Nikon.
Is it worth sending to Nikon or will this problem be solved after some wet sensor cleanings?
I am currently noticing dark spots on the top left side of my pictures starting at f11.
do it yourself
Thank you for sharing this video.
what should I do in case of fungus problem? there is a small fungus on the corner of the sensor.
I am glad I could help. You should check out my review in the link. It explains many aspects of the camera, including the dust issue.
I agree. Nikon to release D610 soon. I suspect the issue will be resolved in that camera.
Hi, thanks for the great video. I bought a refurbished D600 and have the spot problems. I have about 2 weeks left on the guarantee. Did Nikon honor your complaint and fix the problem. And how was it fixed and how long did it take? Thanks.
Well said. I agree. Sensor cleaning swabs are an unnecessary additional cost. But the D600 is phenomenal otherwise. So in the end it can be justified. Thanks for watching.
I purchased a New D600 last September just before the Nikon D610 was announced. I was hoping that by this late in the production cycle Nikon would have fixed the problem given that there were so many complaints. After 4300 shots my sensor is a disaster and needs to be cleaned. I've owned a D200 since 2007 and it's never required a cleaning as bad as my D600 does.
Yes, without question the D600 is a lemon with the oil debris landing on the sensor. It is unfortunate.
do you know what setting we have to be in to be able to operate the lock mirror? my lock mirror for clean in the setup menu doesn't allow me to use it. please help.
Yes. Without question. I just tested the D7100 and its excellent. But the d600 is better in terms of dynamic range. The real question is whether the good ole D3 or D700 will meet your needs.
Your welcome. Just trying to take another perspective, documenting another D600 with an early serial number.
it's the lubrication splattering on the sensor, not a dust issue.
that dust is produced by the curtains. They are ground (they break their surfaces or edges by contacting) whenever taking photos. Nikon in South Korea has recently decided to provide free cleaning service and if the problem persists after the service, they will replace the cameras with new ones.
I own this camera same as the D800e. The D600 is a awesome camera I have over 6,000 shots on this camera. Like the film days nothing escapes dust, sorry but true. I bring my cameras in for a yearly clean-up after deployment and after the clean it's all dust free. I had two of these gems at one time I should have stuck with the first one. But I had traded for the D800e, the first one didn't have a dust issue straight from the box. Now is a good time to purchase one while the price is coming down
I would suggest sending it in as this would extend your warranty for another six months.I had my D600 serviced at the L.A. facility a month ago, and they replaced the entire shutter assembly. After a few exposures, the oil debris problem came back, unfortunately, in my case I am about to go on a vacation next week and won't be able to have the camera"repaired" or "cleaned" prior to my trip. Never in the almost 25+ years of owning a Nikon have I ever been so disappointed in the company.
I got the d610... it gets oils spills all the time... and now the mirror gets stuck up...
Any idea what serial numbers might not have this flaw?
30,000 plus on my Nikon "repaired" D600 and it spits out the dirt or oil like when it was new. Going back to them a second time because I am tired of doing 20 rounds of wet clean to get the sensor reasonably clean
Really, after all these years. Its a shame. I was so excited to here
the D600 introduced back in 2012. What a disappointment. I keep
cleaning mine routinely. Best Wishes
I agree that this spotting issue is very irritating. However, the spots were extremely light and hard to see (in the video anyway) after the sensor cleaning and the 1,000 shutter actuation test run. Perhaps there was still a small amount of dust in the camera or on the back of the lens? Anyway, I think it would be interesting to perform the same test on another Nikon Full Frame not known to have this issue and see if any signs of dust show up after 1,000 shutter actuations (a baseline of sorts).
Thanks
It is not the lens, if it were then cleaning the sensor would have done nothing - and the spots would have remained in the same locations.
After doing the cleaning, new spots came back in new locations.
After a certain number of shutter actuations does the problem go away? I've already had mine cleaned once at around 4000 actuations and the problem seems to be reoccurring. This is a major issue for me since I've been shooting a lot of macro with small apertures (f/16 - f/45).
I can. Off the cuff, I would say the D7100 looses significant dynamic range as you increase ISO compared to the D600. Generally they are about a 2 stop difference. I am compiling some D7100 results now.
hi, i bought mine, brand new from JESSOPS in strattford, london, last year, and contrary to some people, ive had no issues at all, and i have many nikon cameras film/digital and pro lenses all perform perfect, my d600 24-85 and batt pack goes with me everywhere...hope ive helped you.
I followed the instructions from this video and the one on Sensor Swab's website to try and clean my sensor. Afterwards, there appears to be what look like little wet spots on the sensor from the solution. I can't see anything whenever I take a photo though. Is this okay/normal? I only used 3 drops of solution.
how many times did you have to clean the sensor? My 2 month old D600 is like an ad for Sahara! Gonna send it in for cleaning under the warranty. My 4 year old D90 didnt have this much dust. ever.
I just bought one yesterday at a local shop with a later SN (305XXXX) and I have spots already. I was on the lookout for this problem and even waited for a later SN from the shop and no luck. At f12 or f16, they are quite noticeable. I had three spots after 5 shots! I have about 20 spots now. I'm going to send in for a Nikon cleaning first to ask them to try to solve it but then will move to self-cleaning if it returns. Sad.
Can you compare 7100 to 600? ISO performance?
hell be back
is that liquid 'oil remover' or just for standard debris ?
VisibleDust makes 2 separate products, somewhere i readed that if you want the oil out you must get 'SmearAway' and not 'SensorClean'
Did you watch the video at all? Regardless of what liquid he used, he demonstrated that the sensor was dirty - then he cleaned and it was demonstrably clean as evidenced by the photos - then he did another time lapse and you could see NEW spots forming in real time. It wasn't the same old spots reappearing, it was new spots in new locations.
Thanks for backing me up.
I found mine have this oil / dust issue (got from same place). have you checked yours?
I had spots that persisted at the same frame location, however they don't seem to be there after change of lens. Make sure you have sensor spots before getting all bent out of shape! SN 304xxxx
If it were from the lens then him cleaning the sensor would have done nothing….. He cleaned the sensor and the spots were gone, for a short time. This very well documented problem is wide spread and has nothing to do with the lens.
My shutter count 4200+, haven't seen any sensor spots.
i hope so since they have released it today, at least the specs and look of it :) but bit disappointed since it doesn't have so much change from the d600 itself, just small ones.
do I need 100% full battery to be able to operate the lock up mirror?
same here. .I had my D600 serviced at the L.A. facility a month ago, and they replaced the entire shutter assembly.
I dont know what you and others are expecting when you stop cameras down to small apertures. Every DSLR i've shot (both canon and nikon - nikon d40, d90, d700, d3s, d800, d600 and canon 5dm2) all have had dust spots especially at f11 and up... mostly with just wide angle lenses. Just clean it when it needs it.. not that big of a deal. I had one spot with my new d600, i blew air in it.. bam looks perfect now... took all of 15 seconds
Good video
Hi Brian! Becouse the d600 got the dust and oil problem is it worth to buy d700 or d7000 instead ? Thanks!
Man I want this camera wo bad but I don't know if it's the right time to buy. Has nikon came up with the new solution yet other than sending it back to the nikon service shop? When I read the specs if this camera I was so happy untill I found the major issues about this camera. Now I was thinking of getting the d90 while waiting for nikons next solution that will fix this problem.
I've heard that when the D600 is sent to a Nikon service centre, not only is the sensor cleaned, but they also remove the excess lubrication that is spattering on the sensor.
Hopefully, this claim is true. I will do a test to confirm this when I get my camera back from them.
This is so sad to buy a $2000 camera and go throught this.Does any know were the nikon D600 body is made?
I bought this camera refurbished from Nikon via Adorama on ebay. Really bummed to hear about the potential design flaw, but after being out a year can you say if they have corrected it yet? This is my first step up into FX territory, and was supposed to end my need for renting FX bodies for weddings. Help!
My spots/dust always come in the top left corner too! I had a d5000 for two years and a D300S for two years and none of this. Once I got my d600 I had spots within 3 months!
Not happy at all with this problem.
well said sir, my d600 and other cameras; d800e ect is brill and performs perfect, i will always be nikon...happy snapping
Thanks
My D600 shutter count its at 3600 and only took one swab to clean. serial number in the 5010000.
I somewhat disagree with your assumptions. I hope to compare the 6D to the D600. However, if you already use Canon, no major reason to consider the D600. But, if you are already on Nikon, the D600 is still an awesome camera. Regardless of the debris issues. It has not impeded me to take great photos. Yes, it is annoying, but most photos are not taken at f/16 or f/22. I still standby the D600, and recommend the current deals available.
i own this camera and it's actually a really good camera. i do have the dust problem but unless you're shooting plain scenes, like a sky or something, with a small aperture, you don't see those spots. i've also read from other people the the problem goes as it gets older. it's an over lubrication thing.
Ive had the same dilemma. was hard to decide between 5d mark ii or nikon d600. as 5d is almost 5 years old so decided to get nikon. My shutter count is less then 200. There are already oil spot on sensor.Thats really annoying but anyway i dont regret my decision. I am not afraid to clean sensor but cleaning swabs adds extra costs.
d610 coming soon. but i own a d600 and i must say, the camera is a peach. you don't notice the spots, but that would depend on what you shoot. it's not a problem unless you shoot a lot of skies with small aperture. or other plain backgrounds.
Not True, the d610 also has sensor debris problems, I don't think I'm an exception.
Went to shop where I bought camera. Despite what they said before buying it, they didn't seem surprised and even let me come to the back and watch them clean it. They also offered to send into Nikon to try to fix the source of the problem - excess oil? The guy thought the spots were definitely oil when looking at them with a loupe. They smeared a bit and required about 4 separate swipe cycles.
Is this why I'm seeing alot of Refurb D600's on Ebay?
i agree with this. the d700 is a great buy, even though its the previous generation, it's got great high iso performance. full frame most important. megapixel, not really that important.
Hi i looking to bay nikon d600 ? do you think it is good idea ? thay are selling around 1300$ . If i clean it carfully always is a bad idea ? i dont want to be disappointed... Please help
Perhaps try the D610
does nikon d610 experience the same problem??
Koste Kostojcinoski i have not seen issues with the d610, but some owners claim the issues still exists
Koste Kostojcinoski I have the same issue on my D610 =(
+BAZIL3 - my d610 has spots in upper left too!!!! NOT FIXED!!
Agreed. It has not been fixed!
My d600 does not have this issue,
I got this with a D7200 2018, SOLD!!!
you can use a 1000 fine grit sand paper to clean the sensor
And here I am not having to worry about oil or debris because I use a DSLM :P
I really love the d700, but most of the ones I've seen cost almost as much as a d800 which sorta makes the comparison moot in my opinion
You may find your senor problem comes from the way you change your lenses. Leaving the internal optics side up on the desk is never going to help. Dust gets everywhere, remove lens and rear cap it. Keeping it bayonet down, lens up. This minimizes the dust getting into the optics. When you leave it for 5 minutes uncovered of course your sensor is going to collect the dust that's now collected in your lens!!!
Ha ha ha ha! Perhaps.... I will do the same thing: I will buy a D600 as second body to be placed at the side of the D800E. This issue of the D600 is less common than people might think. And in the worst case, sensor cleaning is an operation EASY and inexpensive. And you have to do it once or twice, then the problem goes away. In any case, the D610 is fantastic, too.
WHEW! i thought i was the only one having this problem
Not necessarily 100%, but yes, it does need to be near fully charged.
Why oh why have Nikon allowed this to happen :( Having a major re-think about buy the D600 which seemed the only sensible choice to upgrade from the D90.
If the NIKON D600 had been a car, you would have seen some action from NIKON very fast. Toyota learned that lesson many years ago in America. And it did cost them a fortune. But with a car, it is easy to change to another brand. But when you have some pretty expensive lenses, you just don't change to Canon, since the camera industry cannot agree on a standard fit.
I hope for NIKON that the problem with oil specks will be solved with the D610. But that does't free them for the responsibility of production fault with the D600. The decent thing would be to offer D600 owners with constant oil problems a new D610. The introduction of D610 is NIKON's subtle way of saying, that they have fucked up on the production line in Thailand.,
Another issue, that has not been discussed is a collective lawsuit against NIKON.
d800 is obvoiusly aimed at people who 'need' resolution. fashion, advertisement, that sort of stuff. unless you 'need' that resolution the d700 is all you need and it is still an awesome camera.
I kind of lost interest when you took the lens off and then lay the camera down on it's back :)
I lost interest when he told us to remove the lens .
I'll be back!
Mine too. I was able to remove my debris by rocket blower. I kept doing it once every 1000 shots. No debris so far. My sn is 300xxx.
?????? kamera???
Very good tutorial. But sometimes you have covered your work, putting your body between the lens and the scene of cleaning the sensor. I think today is EASY to clean a sensor.
As a Canon 6D owner, I would like to send my best regard to D600 owner.
😂😂😂😂
I too have a faulty D600, what a nightmare. Debated on sending it in since the repair was 30% effective (some poll I found on the internet). I decided to send it in, they paid for shipping and all, covered under warranty. Shutter replaced. When it came back it had a 2 spots which were pretty small.
So then I shot a wedding and put about 500 photos on it. Rechecked and now there are 14 or so spots, some are pretty big. Not acceptable.
Found thread here www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1265732, some law firm starting a class action on this: www.zimmreed.com/Nikon-D600-Spot-Issue/64550/ not sure how much it will help. I signed up and awaiting a response back from them.
i bought a brand new 550d with 415 euros half a year ago and don't have even a dust spot.i really liked the specs of d600 but this is so disapointing.!!!
Get a D7000, the perfect bread and butter for a beginner like you ^_^.
maybe there wouldn't be so much dust on your image sensor if you put caps on your lenses when they weren't mounted
D7100 has dust issues too....a lot of spots visible only a few months of use!!!
I think this will void your Warranty. ( if they find out. )
That's why u don't buy a d600.. I'm so happy I went for the d7100
I bought it BECAUSE oft this problem. You can clean it yourselfe and now its cheaper than ever...
hi, end of the day all camera makers sooner or later do a price drop or cashback, its just marketing by the makers, d800/ d4 /d71000 ect all have come down somewhat in price.
No you aren't. The issue is not a show stopper, but it is quite disappointing on Nikon.
If the 6D was as good as d600, I would.
I sent my Nikon back, looks like they just cleaned it and sent it back to me, but they didn't send the warranty card back, so now i have no way to send it back the second and third time required for them to replace it, and it is basically unsellable now, they should have just refunded our money, its very dishonest and has made me want to change brands, i am saving for a Fuji now.
I am on my 3rd D600 with this issue EVEN before 5000 actuations. Nikon is downplaying it.
I love the camera but this problem is ridiculous. Tech support does not even use the word oil spots, they tell you that it is "a dust problem and you are dirty and you need to be a bit cleaner". Sure thing Nikon, I had a T2i that never had a speck then spent $2k on this and I have had globs on my first camera, globs on my 2nd and severe spots on my 3rd.
Very disappointing.
My camera is in for the 3rd time for oil spots (dust is not a problem). NIKON will not inform in what batch number range the problem exist. Thus I will not recommend the camera to anybody until NIKON solves the problem. I have had all the NIKON digital cameras and never a problem with dust or oil.
I use the came for travel photography, and being on the road for one month I do not have time to constantly clean my camera (I use Visible Dust).
Shame on NIKON, because it is a great camera.
If I was a Japanese working for Nikon and saw your video... I would be really ashamed.
