      Paul glanced at Halleck, took in the defensive positions of his guards, looked at the banker until the man lowered the water flagon. He said: “Once, on Caladan, I saw the body of a drowned fisherman recovered. He-”
      “Drowned?” It was the stillsuit manufacturer’s daughter.
      Paul hesitated, then: “Yes. Immersed in water until dead. Drowned.”
      “What an interesting way to die,” she murmured.
      Paul’s smile became brittle. He returned his attention to the banker. “The interesting thing about this man was the wounds on his shoulders-made by another fisherman’s claw-boots. This fisherman was one of several in a boat-a craft for traveling on water-that foundered . . . sank beneath the water. Another fisherman helping recover the body said he’d seen marks like this man’s wounds several times. They meant another drowning fisherman had tried to stand on this poor fellow’s shoulders in the attempt to reach up to the surface-to reach air.”
      “Why is this interesting?” the banker asked.
      “Because of an observation made by my father at the time. He said the drowning man who climbs on your shoulders to save himself is understandable- except when you see it happen in the drawing room.” Paul hesitated just long enough for the banker to see the point coming, then: “And, I should add, except when you see it at the dinner table.”

    Emotions are logical, just not all of them are logical for our modern world.
    Anger, hatred, fury... also love, lust and excitement. We evolved these emotions because it helped us in ancient times. Without hatred we would not have hunted all of our natural predators into extinction. Without lust we would not reproduce. And so on.
    But the times have moved on, and many such emotions no longer fit with what is best in this new world we have built, hence why we consider emotions to be "irrational" when in actuality they are perfectly rational for the world that was. Its just that as our world, by our own hand, has changed, we ourselves are unwilling (or perhaps, unable) to change with it. What use is hatred in a world where we could destroy the planet with the push of a button, when diplomacy has shown time and time again to be more effective? What use is lust when we desire to build lasting relationships to underpin our modern, monogamous society?
    Something is "logical" when it is a pragmatic choice/option towards achieving a certain goal, and this encompasses emotions as well. If our goal is to have world peace and happiness, then some emotions are logical while others are illogical and counterproductive. To say that all emotion is illogical is incorrect. To say that some of our basal emotions, driven by countless millenia of evolution, is illogical in our modern world and the future world we want to build, is correct.

    • @skeith1543
      @skeith1543 2 года назад +78

      Lust allows you to form the base of a relationship, from there you need to work at it to maintain the relationship. Anger gives you strength and determination to beat someone or something that has bested you before, Allowing it to control you completely leads to your downfall. Fury is just mindless anger. All emotions have a time and a place, It's when you let them over come your reason and better sense that they become a hinderance. Logic alone however is just as faulty. it only works properly when in tandem with human nature.

    “Emotions can be a weakness or a strength, or both. No matter the circumstance, both instances can be used as destructive weapons. Weapons, a pistol that can be directed to you, me, or us all. Even if you indulge yourself in the logic and rationality you know now, all it takes is for you to feel emotion to pull the trigger.”
    This is a concept I’ve learned throughout my life, especially through observing how modern society is now.
    Love, rage, sadness, and more are potential weapons that can function as one’s avid drive of empowerment or desire for demise. Love can inaugurate you into foolish behaviour. Rage, as well as vengeance, guides you into a path that provides you the satisfaction you yearned for so deeply, even potentially giving you disregard for your own well-being as a whole.
    It is logical to have these emotions, to embrace them as humans beings. They do not necessarily contradict each other as logical comprehension is applicable to human emotion. It is and was necessary for us to thrive as a species. A world full of apathy, is a world full of potential tragedy, as emptiness kills, kills one’s ability to think logically. Emotions are chief variables in a logical analysis. It only seems *logical* to understand each other, to understand that we, as humans, tend to prefer emotion over logic.

      Emotions are meant to guide us to “better” decision-making. Of course, they’re not perfect, but they should always be acknowledged and understood, and other times heeded. If a person disregards their emotion without understanding why they feel a certain way (or how others feel), that’s another way to come to an irrational decision; it’s purposefully shutting out information.

    This is my argument.
    Why do we prefer emotion, then logic? Why? To let our emotions show is to show weakness. Yet we had embraced this weakness and made a part of our culture. When logic is able to help us make the most efficient choices. But we as a species tend to defy logic for emotions. Many conflicts has been caused by emotions. From the hate of those wronged us, to the Germans hatred of the Jewish people. Why do we choose to do this? What does it even mean to be human?
    Simple. We show emotions for it is logical. When is a single ant strong alone? That is why we show emotions. We show emotions so that we can connect with others, so that we can unite, so that we are not alone. Thus it was logical to show emotion. When was a single person able to do something that history records. One may invent an invention. But it is a group who makes it. That is why we we show emotions.

      Exactly, emotion allows humanity to act collectively not individually as it acts as a catalyst to enabling human connection and through human connection we develop the strength to survive collectively, by being emotional we build groups and as a group, humans can more effectively survive which is why it is biologically written into us that we are social creatures that feel emotion, because it is evolutionary advantageous to be so.

    • @yamdagni
      @yamdagni 2 года назад +14

      You're missing something. All reason for using logic itself is to ultimately feel good emotions. Using logic itself is a sort of emotional response. Feeling is the base because no matter what we do it's to feel happiness or satisfaction, even using logic. You don't need to rationalize emotion, there is no need. For all of reality itself is irrational.
      What you said isn't the cause of emotions, it's just the effect. If you look into yourself individually, do you show emotions because of some ultimate rational/logical plan that is behind the scenes, or is it merely because you are in search of some sort of satisfaction?
      Showing emotions isn't even a weakness. Saying rationalism is before emotions is completely backwards. All of logic originates because of ones emotional response for the search of satisfaction and survival.
      We aren't looking for efficiency, we are looking for satisfaction. There is no need to rationalize emotion, it's completely irrational.
      And if you think about it, rationality itself is irrational. Why logic, why anything when you are gonna die after all? One can say that the goal of all logic is ultimately to survive, to thrive. But what is thriving but feeling content and satisfied. Which is after all a feeling. Survival is completely illogical, think about it. When one asks "Why should I survive" answer comes "Because I don't wanna die", and when we ask "Why do I not wanna die?" then it's "because I wanna survive."
      Fear of death is illogical because it is its own reason. And it's an emotion which fuels all rationality and logic.
      Rationalizing emotions is like trying to define a brick in terms of castles. Brick is first order, the castle is only second order.

    Humanity has a tendency to use logic as a way to dampen emotions. What we seem to forget is that the emotions are never gone. They are still there. While logic can only dampen emotions, emotions can overrule logic. Let me give you an example. Two sides are going to war. One side has resources the other needs for survival. You can use logic here in the sense that if you don't fight, you and everyone you know would die sooner or later do to starvation or other reasons. That can keep you going. It would be your crutch that keeps you fighting even though you know what you are doing is wrong. Even though you are killing and stealing, it is necessary for your and your families survival. The problem is that logic and emotion start to get real messy when you begin to involve stuff like ethnicity and religion. There is also taught emotions. Stuff like hate and fear can also be taught. We are told to be weary of strangers and to fear white vans. Some people are taught to hate or fear certain ethnic groups or religions. Sure as a society we have gotten better and have been making strives to improve on and educate people on being more loving and supporting. I fear all it would take would be a big enough war to set us back on braking the chain of mindless hate back a few years or even more.

    While all of that may in fact be true. I present an alternative way of looking at logic, what is logic? Where does it fundamentally come from? It usually comes from deductive reason, by process of elimination or some variance of that. What these methods basically boil down to is that’s they’re based around analyzing perceived information (gathered information from you or another or a combination of these, most likely), while I admit this isn’t a perfect explanation of what logic is as I’m sure I could sit here for hours breaking down how complicated logic really is, so it has to be taken with a grain of salt, in which case bare with it for the sake of the point I’m making. Without a doubt what you’re capable of doing while using logic is amazing evidence by everything humans have constructed. That being said, you only have to look a little further to understand the point I’m making, all those creations humanity is responsible for, they’re based around a persons irrational response. In other words, you can look at logic as a response or the next level to irrationality. The next logical question (see what I did there) is if we view logic as a response to irrationality. What does the next level past logic look like? And does it view logic in a similar manner as we view irrationality?

    In my opinion, human emotion and irrationality is the reason why a Utopia is unobtainable. So long as Humans have emotions like love and hate things can never run smoothly, this is because so long as those emotions are within us so to is greed, pride, etc. Those things are what leads a Utopian society into a decline. All it takes is single emotional response for a Utopia into failing

    Logic dies when idiots are given positions of power to cause chaos among ourselves. Sure, this instance, her war is made by rational people, but not everyone considers "Wouldn't it be more rational to find ways to advance the world instead of killing each other over petty stuff?"
    We have the technology to improve, all of those daydreams of space traveling and exploration and improving local stuff to the point where overpopulation wouldn't be a problem, but instead we use our technology to destroy, that's why we haven't advanced in over 20 years in a sense.
    Her speech talks about anger, but mine talks about greed. No matter how "Advanced" we are, we're still going to the basic instincts of self importance, to the point where we'll kill anyone who contests it.
    And this is a world I regret living, when everyone has to fight to be more important to others, that they lose track that it's the people who MADE you important that you should be helping back, and I don't mean those that gave you the time of the day, I mean EVERYONE.

    And then she says this.
    Speaks of an experience she saw on the front line, but eludes to something that happened far beyond her own life span. Personally.

    Emotion is best described as a double edged sword, it can be of great strength and can also be ones greatest weakness, however it is better to not throw it away, it is true a person without emotion can achieve many things, but they can also be easily taken down as they function more like a machine, they follow a set of rules that makes them predictable, it's the same as people who also throw away logic and facts but the opposite, they are erratic but can easily be taken down though they are far more dangerous due to their more unpredictability, in conclusion it is best to have both and keep them in balance, be predictable and unpredictable, know when to use emotion and when to use logic and when to use both.

    And that's what makes us the most resilient. No matter the cost, we fight for something way bigger than us. Consideration of personal gains when entire countries and peoples are at stake is not rationalism, like Tanya says. It is pure selfishness, maybe even mixed with cowardice and laziness.
    Nothing was ever built or freed by Tanya's so-called "rationalism".

    • @tricksnotreats7277
      @tricksnotreats7277 2 года назад +19

      Interesting argument, but I have to respectfully disagree. Why do nations fight wars? Why do countries put their very sovereignty at stake? Nothing is done just for the sake of it, there is a reason for it, a rationality, something to be gained that deems the risk taken worth it, whether that’d be over resources, territory, or a perceived threat. Was human civilization not built over time due to the benefits that a society could bring (e.g. only some people having to farm which allows everyone else to create and develop different things and contribute in different ways) and the developments that these subsequent societies brought, bringing mankind to where it is today? All of these were and still are done due to rationalism and human being’s reasoning and ability to weigh the benefits and risks of things against each other. What Tanya is referring to here is uncontrolled emotional reactions that pushes aside all rationality and logic and guides a person only by their impulse and feelings at the moment. THAT type of disregard of self-interest or what to be gained or lost is detrimental as you’d probably understand, if someone let their anger overtake them and murdered another person in the process, it benefits nobody and now that person who committed the murder is likely rotting away in prison. What you are referring to is selflessness, and someone who acts out of selflessness vs. someone who acts out of anger, hatred, or vengeance is very different. A society cannot exist and function if its members are only guided by emotion and their individual feelings, civilizations and nations only exist because people understand the need to put aside some of their own emotion and contribute to the continuity of their community.

      @@tricksnotreats7277 But why do we need continuity? Isn't it maked from our basic animalistic emotions to survive? I get it, we do need logic if we want to survive in this world, but we cannot just destroy emotions. I agree with what you said, that rational thinking is key to victory, but we also need our emotions as fuel to continue of the rationalitys and mankind as a whole. (i dont know if this makes sense because my english isnt best, so sorry about that).

    "If I may be permitted to give my opinion once more, General Zettour and rudersdorf are logical pragmatists, highly skilled in political and military matters. No doubt about that. They make for great soldiers, in fact, the same could be said for you as well. Our strategic HQ is truly a bastion of logic, a fortress of knowledge, you could even call it a think tank. It's because of this that you've all come to believe that the war is at it's end because it's the only rational conclusion given the circumstances. But, you see, that sort of thinking ignores one critical component of war."
    "And that would be what? Indulge me. "
    "Our chief strategists are far too rational, in a way it makes them blind to the real world. And thus, they've completely overlooked something crucial. Rationalism and pragmatism are not the only things that drive human actions. At our cores, we are all still foolish creatures."
    "You're suggesting that humans are merely beasts? That we're still slaves to our baser instincts without care for logic?"
    "I hate to be the one who has to tell you this lieutenant colonel but what you just said is exactly right."
    "Preposterous, what evidence do you have?"
    "Knowledge of history, though I guess, I really mean my own history. My own personal experiences and memories."
    "Explain how you know then."
    "I have seen hatred personified, it burned in the eyes of a man promising retribution no matter what the cost. I have seen the moment when a talented soldier lost all reason and gave himself over to anger. I have witnessed countless acts of vengeance. They were driven by fury and so I realized something during this war.... No.... perhaps it would be more appropriate to say I remembered something I'd forgotten. That I have personally experienced the irrationalism of humanity. I know what happens when emotions make someone unreasonable. No matter how much we believed we've modernized, no matter what social constructions we pledge to live by, humans continue to be foolish creatures. We think we're so advanced but when pushed we still prioritize emotions over logic. When a human being's overcome with hatred, they'll keep fighting without concern for self-interest or reason. Regardless of what they might stand to gain or lose."

      @@mugiwaraboyaa9406 I'm looking forward to that. Also, Tanya is correct but also somewhat wrong. My response to her would be this "There's a reason why humans are born with a frontal lobe that manages our emotions and logical thinking" I mean some people in the comments are pretty damn edgy. Scientific Reason or well Human Anatomy and biology aside...The frontal lobe of the brain Is responsible for Planning Organization Logical thinking reasoning and managing emotions so when you think about how everyone has the frontal lobe it only makes sense that we are all similar and prioritize emotions and sometimes we Prioritize logic a simple example would be this... If 2 Cruisers at sea were sinking one had 100 people and the other had 200 but you could only save one the logical answer is to save the 200 people... Now the emotional side of the scenario... If two cruisers out at sea are sinking one has 200 people and one has 100 people but your family happens to be on the boat full of 100, of course, we would go with the emotional response and save the 100 instead of the cruiser with 200. So Tanya is Wrong and Right at the same time Imo. Logic and reason are both hardwired into us so we aren't just animals who don't care for logic or reason we have it but are sometimes put into scenarios where we prioritize one or the other.

I've had one episode myself years ago when I could have hurt someone, or even worse, over anger. I never want to return to that state I was in. It is irrational to go on a rampage when suffering loss. But when a lion kills your children, then you go on a lifelong crusade to kill as many lions as possible? That's a sacrifice of one individual to create an evolutionary pressure on an apex predator. We can see the effects now. The vast majority of large predators could absolutely kill a human, but yet are terrified of us.
    There is a reason that hamurabe's code was revolutionary; "an eye for an eye" is a whole lot less destructive than "your entire family slaughtered for an eye".
