Mark is one of the best storytellers: through text, voice AND instruments! What it is, Aye a Man, Darling Pretty, Telegraph Road (Alchemy Live), Romeo & Juliet, and many more. Great reaction
This song was covered by Art Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers. Mark Knopfler wrote many more great songs: Telegraph Road, Tunnel of love, Private investigations, Romeo and Juliet, Planet of New Orleans, and that is just what he wrote and recorded with Dire Straits, he also wrote many great songs as a solo artist
Such a beautiful song written by Mark Knopfler, he wrote it with The Everley Brothers in mind, and they recorded it too, plus got to perform it with them. This song proves Mark CAN sing, and the guitar playing is gorgeous.
I have hoped for more reactions to this song for a long time! Knopfler and Dire Straits have many beautiful love songs, but this is possibly the one that touches me deepest and with the biggest impact. Although Dire Straits are terrific live, in this case, I think the original album version is better, and also quite a bit longer iirc. In fact in this live version, Mark botches the lyrics, and sings "I'll chase away" twice, when the first line should have been "I'll _wipe_ away those bitter tears." Not very important, but a bit distracting when you know it. The album version is also a bit more precise on the pauses, which makes the emotional impact stronger somehow, at least that how I feel it. Also, at 8 min 32 sec, it's 3 minutes and 20 seconds longer, ending in a long instrumental part. If you haven't heard the entire album Brothers in Arms, you really should. One of the greatest albums of all times. Thank you for a lovely reaction!
@@lhpl Ok, but wipe away the tears or chase away the tears I do not consider that a mistake. If he was someone who covers famous songs and his English wasn't that good so that he botches the lyrics somewhat proper, ok. Knowing the work of Mark Knopfler and his musical artistry I readily assume that he does everything with purpose;). A good day to you.
@@musashimiyamoto586 even the best make simple mistakes sometimes. If you know _Don't Bring Me Down_ by Jeff Lynne/ELO, you know there is a "mysterious" word. I don't know what Jeff was thinking when he wrote it - I guess he just needed a word to fit and made it up, and never got around to fixing it, perhaps because Mack (the engineer) said it sounded like "Gruß" ("greetings", in German.) When doing it live, the audience singing along however would sing "Bruce", so now Jeff does too. :-) When I sing along to _Why Worry_ I also sometimes mix up the first and second line. But I really have no idea how you would go about chasing away tears. ;-) Nice day to you too!

Why so pedantic? And how do you know he didn't intend to use a different wording? It is called artistic license.
@@musashimiyamoto586 It wasn't meant pedantic in any way, but I do believe it was a simple mistake.
I just happen to like the album version more.
