@@Gods-Elect I'm sorry, been very busy. The LED bulbs did help, but I really think the better option is to get some aftermarket parts that are NOT from gm. One video showed that the reflective part of the headlight assy basically melts away because of the high temperature from the halogen bulbs. ( I forgot if it was a thin layer of chrome or aluminum, but either way, after it melts away, the housing really needs to be replaced.) Anyway, good luck and have a great weekend.
Thajk you. Fantastic explanation! Have mine for 9 yrs and 176k w DANGEROUS headlight output identical to your garage door demo. Your trailer absolutely validates your theory and explains the why regarding the problem. Cadi's class action law suit is an ABSOLUTE JOKE and an insult to anyones intelligence. (Talk about not taking ownership,,,, AND negotiating a ridiculous outcome that had to have been approved by a bogus judge...) Primary consumer of the brand is older generation and selling the car for years w this well known and dangerous problem speaks volumes about the business side of the co. (Car has done me really well, but headlights have always been issue. Wife (age 52 w good vision ) won't drive it and gives me grief when I offer it to my 23 yr old son to drive if his use might involve nightfall.) I have chinese HID's I've been running fine for ~3yrs, but output is same situation as your stock demo, just ~20%(?) brighter. (Improved from dangerous (stock), to fairly dangerous (HID)). I did Night Hawk stock replacement before that, w almost zero improvement. Your knowledge transfer gives me confidence to know HOW/WHY an aftermarket assembly will work better. I will replace for safety (me and next owner), looks (as current assemblies (like most 9 yr old plastic clear assembly covers )cloud and yellow requiring cleaning every 6 months), and improved resale value (or at least give me comfort I'm not selling 200k+ mile car to young kid that is really dangerous after dark). This is obviously one of my few hotbuttons - because: 1. I know untold qty of older folks have been getting financially reemed at the hands of Cadi and the stealerships over this topic. 2. The ridiculous resolution Cadi negotiated and the courts allowed in the class action law suit (this was just icing on the cake for any well informed SRX owner...)
I just bought used a 2014 kia Sorento LX and have the same issue, low beams are too dim, even after replacing bulbs. Ive learned it may be the chrome inside the housing has melted away. On amazon i see some that look like chrome inside and others that look dark so I'm hesitant to buy them. Also need to change to LED,less heat.
Voltage on the rh side of most gms run higher than lh. Both rh and lh reflectors would be produced at the same time under same process by gm supplier. My guess is true failure is not enough metallization and lack of in process top coaton on reflector to begin with, burnt completely off when HID was installed. all the plastic is high heat polycarbonate . the missing metallization on the back of the reflector allows for heat to escape .
Last year GM did a recall on the SRX headlight assembly, I have a 2014 Cadillac SRX and called my local Cadillac dealer they got my car in now my headlights work great, two hours and no charge.
Great job. Good information. Do you think the chrome housing be re-chromed? Or painted with a heat resistant paint? But my big question is do you think it could go back together after taking apart? I just replaced the buds two day ago. Wow, what a pain.
Gino, in my opinion that would not be worth the effort. Just replace with aftermarket and be done with it. To much trouble taking the front bumper on and off to be experimenting with re-chrome or high temp paint. Ours aftermarket headlights are still burning bright after much use.
I just replaced the halogen bulbs with led, very little improvement. Looks like replacing the headlight assembly is the only fix. You're right, replacing the bulbs was a pain, especially the driver's side.
Buy aftermarket headlamps, I got so frustrated they didn't do anything to address this I ended up buying a pair from eBay, they look cool and they got LED DRLS which looks awesome, and get the Sylvania ZXEs, they're very bright and kinda look like HIDs.
I am so glad I watched your video. Thank you so much for the info prior to me trying to replace the bulbs. I suspected something else was going on. I inherited my 2011 SRX and which is why I didnt get the letter GM sent out. Would you have any suggestions on getting that letter? I'm thinking to start with a GM dealer service center. Thoughts?
Check with your dealer first just incase GM has decided to own their mistake. I’m betting you won’t get any help and will need to buy aftermarket and replace them yourself. My aftermarket assembly’s with halogen bulbs are still doing great! Let us know what you do!
Hey Don, If the new assemblies fail on you I recommend getting ahold of the retrofit source. The are a us based supplier of aftermarket projectors and the quality difference is night and day compared to the OEM. I have a friend with a 17 Duramax and he changed to a Morimoto set from there. I would be willing to bet the output is at least double the factory with a ton more light brightening up the ditches.
Thank you so much for this very helpful video. I can't find the name of the aftermarket headlight assembly you bought from Amazon. Can you please let me know.

Don, I saw where someone recommended LED lights. I've done that on my Chevy Traverse and its great. I have a 2012 SRX also, with the dim headlights. Are the LEDs the way to go, or are you saying a new headlight assembly is necessary also?
Yes, new headlight assemblies are required. The design of the bulbs (LED or Halogen) require a concave reflector to direct the light forward through the lens.
My 2010 Srx low beam quit. I took out the ballast which had water in it. I put it in the oven at 150 degrees for 30 minutes. Siliconed the upper parts to seal from moisture. 4 years later everything works like new. And no you don’t have to remove front grill/bumper to access the lights.
Don, would it be wise when I get the new assemblies to also get LED bulbs and replace the halogens before I put the new assemblies on? Since led burns about 300 degrees cooler?
Thank you. Just a quick question. I found the assembly on Amazon. Could not find the brand you used but found a set for $305. It says Halogen bulbs only. And I think it even comes with halogen bulbs(according to reviews). But will LED lights work in it? Or is there a specific assembly that I have to get for LED to work. Was thinking using LED to extend the life of new assembly. Thanks again
Will do. Will the LED bulbs go right into the new assembly or will I need a kit? Also as of now it looks like I have a low beam bulb and a high beam bulb in each assembly. With LED will it be a combo bulb and only need one bulb per assembly. Or will need to purchase a LED for low and another LED for high. So still two bulbs per assembly. Thanks.
@@gregmarek731 use the Amazon function for your make and model and they should fit. Now for the High beams, If your model is the same as mine you can use the halogen bulbs that are supplied with your new assemblies. It’s only the protractor beams (the ones behind the thick fisheye lenses) that get to hot.
I got denied because I only had an invoice and not a receipt. Kinda thought it was the same. I installed the LEDs and the brights are awesome but the dim is no more than a running light or fog light. I'm going to replace the housing after seeing what you discovered. I don't have fog lights on mine but does anyone use their fog lights with the not so good dims? Just curious if it makes a difference?
Anything with projector beam lights has the same problem the lamp housing chrome burning out is the problem from the heat and no reflection from the lamp and the manufacture knows it I took both of mine apart and the corrosion from water leaks and excessive heat was was apparent
I got I got the same ones that you got. One question did you have to adjust the bulbs or the lens because I had to take it to the dealership because the Dim were shining too low pointed to low.
So it looks like the best fix is to replace the headlight assembly and install LED bulbs. They run a lot cooler and should slow down the deterioration of the reflective material.
Correct, I put halogen bulbs in my new after market assemblies because that’s what I had on hand. But after doing this postmortem video I believe you are correct LED’s would be best.
@@joeganns2510 I believe you can buy LED that at direct replacement for the halogen bulbs but if the reflective material is burnt off your headlight assembly reflector the LED’s will be worthless.
I hit a deer because mine were so dim. Body man replaced them with aftermarket assemblies and now 2-3 years later I am back we’re I started! No low beams! Suzanne’s, if it has projector beam headlight (most likely does) and if they have not been replaced, based on the response to this Video they will be a problem.
@@MrRv8pilot I confirm. I do have the problem with my SRX 2016 bought in Canada. Thank you so much Don for this video so well done. I am in the process of choosing an aftermarket assembly from Amazon and Led lights.
The dislikes are probably from gm engineers. ( They probably had to get someone else to show them how to dislike the video! 🤔) Yes, I meant to put small case letters. This junk doesn't deserve to have capitalized letters!
HID kits range from crap quality all the way up to outstanding quality. When buying these kits splurge for the good ones. Mine are 11 years old now without a hiccup. Even aimed properly people flash me all the time when they're on
You can also fix that haze on the inside by separating the lens from the housing. Take some patience and heat but you can also fix any sealing issues when you put the back together with the right epoxy
Hello Don, I'm in the process of ordering new Head Light Assemblies for my wife's 2014 SRX. Can you suggest the correct type of LED lamp. I did some research and not all LED are good designs. I watch a video from "Headlight Revolution", and the take-away was do your research!!!
Kevin, I wish I could, unfortunately I did NOT install LED’s on my wife car. Several other commentators have with great results but I don’t know the brand. Please post if you find a brand that works in your wife’s car. Thanks Don
I did a simple alignment. I marked (with tape) where my old headlight light assemblies shined on my garage wall and then adjusted the new assemblies to the same spot. Very little left-right adjustment was needed but good bit of up was needed for both.
Did anyone get the ACANNI "black" version? and did the work and fit the same as the shiny chrome ones? I need to order and find a body shop to install before we get in an accident. My wife goes in to work at 1 a.m. and we are now getting snow which is making visibility even worse!!! Please I hope I get a reply!
Rob, I don’t know if anyone has used the Acaii black version. I appears like the internals are the same. Please let us know if you do and how they look and work. My wife is still happy with hers.
You purchased a cheap HID system. I have had HIDs for over a year with no issues. I also opened the headlights, polished the lens, sealed the housing and no issues with nice bright road illumination.
Polo, It wasn’t cheap maybe low quality but not cheap!! I’m glad you found a solution that works for you but I’m quite sure most people are not willing (nor should they be required ) to spend $$$$, cut, polish and cobble together their headlight on a expensive luxury car. I spent about $300 on replacing both headlight assemblies what did you spend on HID? And how long will that polish job last in the intense heat of HID bulbs? The real solution here is for GM to own this engineering mistakes and fix the problem!
@@MrRv8pilot Hello Don, my set cost me about $300. I purchased a Morimoto set that I have used before with no issues. I remember seeing in your video that your reflector housings had been burned. Mine did not have that issue as a 2010. I have a feeling that someone if you were not the original owner may have used high wattage bulbs to get the lights brighter. As for the polish, I polished them well then used a high quality UV clear on my lenses. I also polished the optic inside to get better clarity out of the projector lens itself. While in there I installed a DRL switchback 12" LED strip to update the look. It was time consuming but worth it. Had thought about the aftermarket set but wanted the LED strip and HID.

We cleaned the hard water off the cover and worked great.
Great Job!! Thank you for taking the time to do this. Send this to GM! So did you end up using LED lows? If so, which ones?
Thank you, no I put the halogen back in (so far so good) but probably not a bad idea to use the lower temp LEDs.
I got a set of 6500 K color LEDs to replace both low beams in our 2013 for $100.00.
But I still say the designers and the company officials that won't admit that's it's junky work should be ashamed of theirselves.

I'm sorry, been very busy. The LED bulbs did help, but I really think the better option is to get some aftermarket parts that are NOT from gm.
One video showed that the reflective part of the headlight assy basically melts away because of the high temperature from the halogen bulbs. ( I forgot if it was a thin layer of chrome or aluminum, but either way, after it melts away, the housing really needs to be replaced.)
Anyway, good luck and have a great weekend.
This is obviously one of my few hotbuttons - because:
1. I know untold qty of older folks have been getting financially reemed at the hands of Cadi and the stealerships over this topic.
2. The ridiculous resolution Cadi negotiated and the courts allowed in the class action law suit (this was just icing on the cake for any well informed SRX owner...)
Well said,Tom
I just bought used a 2014 kia Sorento LX and have the same issue, low beams are too dim, even after replacing bulbs. Ive learned it may be the chrome inside the housing has melted away. On amazon i see some that look like chrome inside and others that look dark so I'm hesitant to buy them. Also need to change to LED,less heat.
Hi, what brand of aftermarket headlights improved the brightness?
What state are you in?
@@saward5826 Oregon
I pay $1720 to Central Cadillac of Ohio, and after 9 month GM send me a check for this.
Nice!
Pop in some LEDs from headlight experts 3yrs ago never had another issue. Same car
Interesting, was your low beams noticeably dim before you installed the LEDs?
Thanks a lot
Anyone know if it's the same story on the first generation SRX? Having the same problem but it's both sides.
I would be willing to bet the output is at least double the factory with a ton more light brightening up the ditches.
good info, thanks Tom.
Hello Don, so on the aftermarket replacement headlight assembly, did you go with the Halogen bulbs again?
Yes, Halogen and the wife is still happy 😀
I think it's funny how many of these are passenger side. mine is the same right now passenger side as well.
I’ve noticed that as well, strange!
Thank you so much for this very helpful video. I can't find the name of the aftermarket headlight assembly you bought from Amazon. Can you please let me know.

The stock lights on my 2017 Ram 1500 were also very dim! I swapped all my lights with Morimoto lights -
Don, I saw where someone recommended LED lights.
How do you remove it
So if I take mine apart like you did can I get it repaired or rechromed?
Don, would it be wise when I get the new assemblies to also get LED bulbs and replace the halogens before I put the new assemblies on? Since led burns about 300 degrees cooler?
Yes
I cut them open with a wiz wheel, I didn’t see any way of getting them apart without destroying them.
I bought aftermarket, or the used car dealer I bought the 2014 SRX dealer from bought aftermarket bezels like you did but they did not help.
Yes I believe LED will work and that's the combination I would recommend. (new light assemblies + LED bulbs) good luck and let us know how it works.
Thanks for all the help. Went with the new assembly and LED bulbs. Works great.
The mirror finish is probably from a really thin layer of aluminium.
I do if i think of it and yes it does make a difference. Let me know if you try it and what you think?
Using gas lanterns would be a big improvement over Cadillac's POS oem headlights.
Anything with projector beam lights has the same problem the lamp housing chrome burning out is the problem from the heat and no reflection from the lamp and the manufacture knows it I took both of mine apart and the corrosion from water leaks and excessive heat was was apparent
Thank you. I have a 2016 SRX and was wondering what was going on. What was the aftermarket assembly’s called?
Acanii is the brand I used. I just looked and they are still available from Amazon for $285. Mine are still working well. Don

what brand aftermarket assembly did you buy at Amazon?

What were the headlights you purchased from Amazon?
Fast forward to 9:15 if you don't wanna hear the life story and want to get to the actual fix
So it looks like the best fix is to replace the headlight assembly and install
LED bulbs. They run a lot cooler and should slow down the deterioration of the reflective material.
Correct, I put halogen bulbs in my new after market assemblies because that’s what I had on hand. But after doing this postmortem video I believe you are correct LED’s would be best.
@@MrRv8pilot will the LED fit the headlight assembly without the kit?
@@joeganns2510 I believe you can buy LED that at direct replacement for the halogen bulbs but if the reflective material is burnt off your headlight assembly reflector the LED’s will be worthless.
Wondering how the headlights are doing now that you’re about one year post install? Did you find that they began to dim at all like the OEM?
Still bright and the wife is happy!
I hit a deer because mine were so dim. Body man replaced them with aftermarket assemblies and now 2-3 years later I am back we’re I started! No low beams! I get flashed in town like I don’t have my lights on. I’m so sick of this horse 💩! I want to trade it in but my husband who rarely drives my car doesn’t want too!
wonder if you can powder-coat that piece ? that would make a better fix.
I don’t think powder coat will take the heat, but let us know if you try it and it works.
Have had several mdx's never had no problems with them but boy you can let me get this Cadillac and I've had several problems especially with headlight s

@@MrRv8pilot Thank you! I'm goin' in!
My 2012 SRX Has this problem and just got the middle finger from the Service Dept at Sunset Cadillac in Sarasota Florida. What do I do now? Replace both head lights?😵💫
Bad customer service is a business decision! The good news is that these headlight assemblies are reasonably priced on amazon and not that difficult to change. I installed the ACANII brand on my wife’s SRX when ever I did that video and she still happy
GM should be commended for engineering obsolescence.
I just did a set of these for somebody. I noticed a difference with new lights but they still aren’t happy with the low beams.
What type bulbs did you install?
@@MrRv8pilot stock H11’s from the other lights. I noticed a difference in the shop immediately. Im sure was same issue. I was going to cut open as you did and said the heck with it. Robert, it must be the alignment. We’re still running the halogen bulbs and are happy with the performance.

Yes, I meant to put small case letters.
This junk doesn't deserve to have capitalized letters!
Will these aftermarkets work with the active motion system.
Im not sure but if you order replacements for your year and model then they most likely will work.

@@MrRv8pilot I thought the brighter lights just burn out faster. Replacing my assemblies today. Thank you for the great info
Hi Don. Did you have to align the new headlight housing or was it a simple swap?
Thanks
I did a simple alignment. I marked (with tape) where my old headlight light assemblies shined on my garage wall and then adjusted the new assemblies to the same spot. Very little left-right adjustment was needed but good bit of up was needed for both.
@@MrRv8pilot OK thanks for the reply and the intuitive video. It fits my application exactly.

Yes I believe all came from factory with halogen bulbs and halogen bulbs do not require a ballast.
