BYU fan here! Just do us a favor and rank BYU as 8th in the Big 12 so we can have a chip on our shoulder! The team will take care of business after that!
ASU is probably a favorite next year. BYU and Baylor and Iowa State are in the mix. I think Colorado takes a step back. I wouldn’t be surprised if TCU, OK State and Utah are highly competitive next year.
BYU likes being the underdog. It's in their DNA. 10 years of Indepedence ingrained that mentality into the program. They Don't know how to play from a top or lead position. The Alamo Bowl was the perfect scenario for BYU. No love, no Press, no Hope... that's when BYU shines. This season was the perfect storm. Even against lesser ranked teams, BYU was picked to lose by odds makers over and over. Kalani's biggest job is going to be retraining every person and player in the Football program to play from ahead or as the favorite. If he can't? Then BYU will always be an upper tier team in the B12 but not the perennial power house they want to be...
I guarantee you BYU while returning its senior starting quarterback, and most of its pieces from an 11 Win campaign will not be ranked to start the season.
BYU needs to make some changes to their offense before they should be favored for anything. Multiple turnovers, 50% completions, and wacky play calling gets old and loses games that shouldn’t be lost. Why is no one talking about this?
Probably because they won 11 games… And it’s not just because the defense. Utahs defense was just as good as BYUs this year (going off points allowed) yet they had a 7 game losing streak. BYU did a lot of good things offensively, they moved the ball Retzlaff was their leading rusher through the first 1/3 of the season due to an injury depleted RB room. Retzlaff was hurt against Utah and probably shouldn’t have played against Kansas. Offense has a lot of good things going for them and has retooled the o line nicely. Comp Zach Wilson’s first 18 starts to Retzlaff (and Retzlaff played better competition) and you would take Retzlaff.
The eye test is crap. We need to create a 32 team playoff brackets 5 rounds with no bye's. It allows all conferences in the mix and lets the players and coaches determine who is the best. But it takes the power away from the Couch Potatoes using their rose colored eye test and their pole dancing to figure out who should be in the playoffs.
@@rambomoore381 depends on who you talk to. 12 left out several teams that could have had an impact. And the SEC’s great hope was a great flop. There is a good chance that all SEC teams will be eliminated soon.

Short answer: No Long answer: BYU can’t compete long term. They’re closer to a Houston tier program than a Kansas tier program. They’re capable of a top half finish 1-2 times a decade, and not much more.
