Pre-stain definitely helps and creates an even coat but I have noticed that the stains end up lighter. Maybe it’s just me but I noticed using like varathane expresso or any dark stain that it comes out more like a goldish/orange rather than a darker brown look I am going for.
I’ve often wondered about the benefits of pre-stain. Thanks for taking the time to do this Mitch.
Thanks Chuck!

Interesting. I noticed the same thing with the oak. I'm wondering if multiple coats of it would cure this. Maybe another test is in order lol.
This is really useful and timely. I am doing a staining project tomorrow and I was uncertain about using pre-stain but you convinced me. Thanks.
I'm glad it was helpful! Thanks Ken
Pretty interesting indeed, Mitch! 😃
Thanks a lot for testing it!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks!
Never used prestain but I always disliked staining pine and I was surprised to see it even made oak look better wow!
Thanks Mitch. Looks great.
Awesome job!
I use the pre stain when it is like furniture or something I want to look nice. If I making a cabinet for the garage I just stain it.
Yes I agree.
I didn't know about this... Interesting...
It definitely makes a difference!
Jesus Christ I was looking at the thumbnail and didn't see the face and was wondering what was Linus doing
