He was the youngest person to ever win that tourney at the time. He used to whip my butt everyday in practice when we were in the same weight class, and wrestling him like that made me the best I ever turned out to be, which was not all that good in comparison. To be fair, the guy wasn't really fighting with jiu jitsu. He was basically just wrestling. There was plenty of technique, but it was all wrestling energy, not BJJ. Wrestling is all about dominating the opponent and wadding them up in a ball until they quit. BJJ is the opposite. It's about moving an playing back and forth until I catch you or you catch me. It's super annoying to trying to roll with a wrestler, because it's usually just a stalemate. They generally are very good at takedowns and control, but not very good at submissions. It's always a treat having the Newb BJJ guy/ ex-wrestler trying to rape choke you from guard.

      Do you mean, they disengage to defend against a bad position they are in to avoid giving you a chance for a submission? If so, I would imagine it is a good move to do that on the wrestlers part. Its very difficult for a wrestler to transition to jits because the grappling part means points against you in wrestling. It depends of skills of personn. How serious& energitic they were in that fight. Are they on their prime or end cycle. Their weight class. So many other factors

    I'm a striker and I fully appreciate how formidable wrestling is for self defense. However, my only complaint is that I can't see destroying my knees on an asphalt parking as being the best choice for self defense.

    • @CaneFu
      @CaneFu 2 месяца назад +1

      @@artandarchitecture6399 NO, it isn't as most self defense situations do not justify the use of deadly force and you will be in a heap of trouble if you shoot someone. If you don't mind going to prison for several years while losing your life savings, your home, and your family...then yeah, a firearm is perfect.

      @@gnq_k I used to be a bouncer and had to fight a wrestler late one night in a parking lot. He came at me but I tagged him several times on the way in, breaking his nose. He did manage to get a two leg take-down on me but I was able to get up and then beat him across the parking lot, dislocating his jaw. After that first take-down he didn't seem to have any defense when he was getting hit. It would be best to master all the skills but any kind of fight is an iffy situation at best. I'm older now and it's too late to learn anything new but I would add wrestling to the mix if I had to live this life over again.

    Is Jake Clark really 228 pounds? He was an 87 kilo guy (192ish) in competition as the old man in the field. Usually when you’re mid-30s you don’t cut that hard anymore. I could see him being 210-215. 36 pounds is an awful long way down.
    If he is 228, that is incredible.

    Chokes & joint locks are illegal in Olympic wrestling !! Having grappled with 4th Dan black belts , I had no problems taking them down , then the fun starts ! Pins don't count as a finish & again submissions are no longer allowed in wrestling & were banned in the early 1900's . Control to survive on the mat with a submission specialist puts any wrestler in big disadvantage . Much respect, but have pin as a finish & see how long you could compete/ survive .

Work out for last 5 years with my youngster work out partner of 59 years old can stil bench 500 lbs. Pulls same, and deadlift 650 to 700 lbs.
