Great idea with the needle test!
I did this some weeks ago with a razor blade, where I lightly cut into the neck/stem to see whether it would bleed the white latex sap.
Same concept, but this sounds less destructive so thanks for sharing!

I might use this in the next couple of days. I have the very first figs that I grew myself beginning to ripen (or they have sunburn and are rotting, who knows?)
I did have two breba figs that ripened and that I ate that were on the trees when I bought them. Neither still had the white sap when I picked them but there was a lot of anxiety involved. 😅

You just explained why it is very possible to get a fig that is drying on the tree in a humid place vs a fig that is left to become dried on the tree. Lower relative humidity prevents spoiling or souring.
This is also why a fig like Ischia Black is great choice in the Willamette Valley and a gamble in humid climates. IB has an eye that explodes.
I have been watching videos where folks in humid places are leaving the figs on too long lately.
You can tell as they start spoiling at the eye.
Your perfect time to pick is different than mine.

@@thenotoriousfig - One more thing is that figs also spoil in very hot places vs the Willamette Valley - my first Black Madeira was at Wolfskill and spoiled. It was caprified and rather nasty. This is why Harvey is always cautious when he does his taste testing vids.
I just don’t worry about spoiled figs where I’m at.

What if the neck is on tree and not a stem. My BMKK all I see is the next in tree and when it’s ripening I see it creasing when drooping
You can poke a little on the fig side and if the sap flow has stopped, it'll stop there too. If they are too dense, then try removing a leaf. Anyway you look at it, it's an experiment. Don't forget to put in fridge and see your results that way too. Good luck!

Fig-uring out when to pick a fig...
The organza bags are great for deterring birds, but not so great for rats.
I don't have rats here, just mice and squirrels mostly. I have a big German Shepherd dog that chases most critters.
@@thenotoriousfig We have some rats where I live. Plus I have some lazy cats, but they aren't earning their keep :-)
How do you keep the squirrels from getting by them?
@@CrimeWatchNPUT bagging right away helps and the dogs in the yard keep them away
Agreed. At least once the rats have discovered figs, a piece of fig in a snap trap set out at dusk works great as bait! And way less problematic to clean up afterwards than peanut butter if you have as many ants as I do. The organza bags do help with my ants, but some bags don’t wind up tight enough and do get invaded.
