    I think that cycle you quoted from the book has sped up. Now, 1 year after is dowdy. but 10-15 years after, it's back in style again. For example the cycle between high rise to low rise back to high rise jeans, or the cycle from skinny leg to boot/flare back to skinny. It's all sped up to 20 years or less because they want you to throw away your old jeans and buy new ones every year.

    • @justineleconte
      @justineleconte  7 лет назад +69

      +lestrange I would even say that this never-ending "revival" trend is almost a characteristic of our generation... This fast turnaround pace is something fostered by the fast fashion industry. But I don't know if it will stay like that... Usually, when a trend/behaviour goes too far, the following trend is to "react" against the first one by doing the opposite.

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged 7 лет назад +27

      There have always been revivals- the 70's brought back many styles from the 40s. Then the 90's brought back the 70's. And now we've got the 90's back again. (but I even remember some hipsters wearing 90's ditsy floral prints about 5 years ago, so the 90's revival has been dribbling back for a while.)
      The gaps are just getting shorter in between. First it was 30 years, then 20, then 15.
      If I was being generous to the fashion industry, I might say that when the eye gets tired of one thing (wide lapels, wide legged pants, etc, it reacts by swinging to the other extreme to see something fresh (narrow lapels or skinny jeans, etc.). But if I was being more pessimistic, I would say they periodically move to the opposite in order to make people desire to buy all new clothes. Planned obsolescence - make people want to get rid of their clothes and buy the new versions. They have to make the new thing different enough that the old ones look completely "out".

It's so nice how you take into consideration that we are all different and that having a different opinion or background is totally ok. I also found very interesting how you brought a quote from the book to illustrate your point of view: it shows how much you value knowledge. It's a pleasure to watch you. I love your channel, but I have to say that I think trends exist only to make money for big businesses. Big businesses deliberately make women more unsure of themselves than they would ordinarily be- and we all know that a woman who is unsure of herself tends to purchase more products than a woman who is confident about herself. No, thanks. I think I'll just wear what I like, as I've always done. Much love to you, though, Justine! Keep it up!

      I think it's inevitable to be influenced by trends. For example, you hardly ever see people wearing those massive shoulder pads (well, this winter, it's slowly coming back, but much less dramatical) or massive perms, even though many adults used to do that in the 80s and probably really liked the look. A massive trend right now, I find, is quite casual clothing even in festive or official situations. The kids of the millenials will maybe think that we were massive sloths, always wearing denim and brushed cotton shirts. ;)

      It's like in The Devil Wears Prada. Even when you think you are being unique fashion makers still create garments based on trends. Either some imitation or alternative to what is on the runway or what celebrities are promoting. Even if you tell people you don't care about any trend anytime you buy an article of clothing, even if it is on clearance or at a thrift shop, at some point it was trendy. Unless you are out there cobbling your own shoes 🤗 so the fun is that you can embrace some trends that fit your personality and your add own twist. Enjoy participating in your culture but still be yourself.

      I’m so glad we are in a time where everything is out there.
      I had a rotten time in the 2000’s avoiding hiphugger bell bottoms which were everywhere and made everyone look short and fat. I finally settled on bootcut because they were relatively subtle but still in style. Thank goddess skinny jeans and leggings came back in. I’m ok with loose, or crop pants, too.

    I tend to look at catwalk trends to see if I will like anything from fast fashion retailers later that year (I don't have a budget yet to shop for higher quality clothes, but I'm planning on starting to invest into them in next couple of years and start learning how to sew.)
    I became extremely picky over last year, so if I don't feel like it flatters my body or goes with the rest of my wardrobe I will most likely not buy it. If I like something and how it makes me feel, I don't think I'd really care if it's in fashion or not.

As someone who went to high school in the 90s, I can brag I would never be caught dead with a plaid pair of pants, a shirt with a giant yellow happy face, platform tennis shoes, blue lipgloss (out of home, I did have one as a gift, but the little voice inside me told me not to let anyone see me wearing it.. little voice was right, lol), or my head full of tiny butterflies.

    I commend you on this most sensible response. I am in Turkey where fashion follows trends, but only on a more modest and low-key level. It is against the norms here to "stand out," so I must choose my trends with care, but I also must be up to date according to the secular part of society, which is a wee bit more than half the population.

    Justine, you are the queen of "not fast fashion". How insightful...as an older woman I have seen many of the recent trends before when I was young and have been happy to wear them again but covering more skin than I did first time around....I feel so comfortable in the clothes of my 20s the Boho looks. Of course I don't bare my midriff, but I remember instinctively how to make styles from the 60's/70's "rock" so I have had a fun couple of years restocking my wardrobe with flares, kimonos, even Gucci style embroidered jeans/denim jacket with the coral snake etc.Luckily I live in a place (Guatemala) that attracts young tourists who love these styles..Europeans and N. Americans on "adventure" vacations, where I live these clothes are always "in style". You are so right about geography affecting trends! I do dress more sophisticated as well, but for street fashion where I live Boho is always " in" as the young tourists want a fantasy of what they thought adventure travel was in the 60's and 70's. Trends are difficult for you to discuss because your viewership is so varied but your videos have staying power unlike "Lookbook"/ "Fashion Haul" ones that will grab interest only briefly while the newest trend is "in". HInt: never throw out your very favorites, esp. anything you have personalized. My flares of old lovingly hand embroidered by me would have been so current this Spring...sadly I tossed them about 10 yrs ago...never toss your favorite item from any given decade because one day you will wish you had it again! Til it comes around again, the item may work for costume parties

    I read that book when it first came out and still have it I believe. Studied fashion design in 84 and discoverd that I was more interested in why people wore what they did rather than what they wore. I will add to Lurie's opinion on tight and slim fitting pants, that at the time there was no such thing as stretch denim or fabric with lycra in it. So I guess new invention can add to what can be in fashion.

      I am not sure if there really are timeless pieces. Even if it's something really basic like a little black dress or a pair of blue jeans it'd vary in sillhouette, cut, fit and those are not immune to the influence of changing trends. I'd like to see a video on it to be honest :D.

    • @katk5205

      I've always been way ahead of fashion, by wearing what is ugly now. High fashion is ugly, but it's new ugly not 1980s sneakers and blue jeans ugly. For example I often wear very 90's or very 70's outfits. Right now 90's is in, but in a very modern way, and 70's mustard sweaters are popping up but I've been wearing that 90's trend for 5 years now, and I've moved into very 70's looks lately with a splash of very original 1992 grunge look. But even before i explored ill fitted jeans with sweaters I had tartan pants with leather jackets in an original 1978 punk look before the 'edgy' look became fashionable.

    • @laliday
      @laliday 7 лет назад +12

      There are timeless pieces. It depends on quality and longevity of the piece. Some things will mature in the closet like a good wine. They don't have to be plain either, some small avangarde details are fine. But trends are typically marked with ridiculous details that are difficult to overlook. Think peplum blouses, or heavy shoulder pads, or bell-shaped jeans, very pointy shoes or square toe shoes. Consider platform shoes, they are bulky, heavy and they completely change the balance of your figure. They can be trendy for a year, but will never be elegant or timeless. You need to understand fine art and know good design to be timeless. Things like proportions, color combinations, and a balancing act in relation to shape. To be timeless you cannot overdo on any of these trends. You can still buy modern items, but not overdo in the details. See Betty Halbreich on youtube. I'd consider her style to be timeless. You will still need to vary some items, and perhaps add modern details, but you can keep your clothes in the wardrobe for years.

    • @justynawisniewska1213
      @justynawisniewska1213 7 лет назад +9

      Yeah but trends go deeper than over the top things. Fashion shifts and the shapes of classic pieces get outdated too, be it any kinds of shoulderpads or a very fitted dress shirt is quite outdated, they are slightly more loose fitting now. I am talking about the cut and little details shifting with time so therefore it's hard to buy truly timeless stuff. When things from the past get back in fashion they are given the modern twist exactly with that, a certain fit and cut that is in at the time. High waisted jeans were not anywhere to find round 2012/2011 in stores and skinny jeans were unheard of in early 2000. If I got any jeans at that time no matter how high quality they'd look quite weird and ridiculous now. I mean of course you could go on without switching the closet out for round 5 up to 9 years choosing simple clothes and just adding a little pop with an accessory or some statement piece. If you mean timeless by that, just not switching things out every season then I agree and I think it's absolutely ridiculous to buy almost a whole wardrobe every season. But I don't think it's possible to go on for multiple decades with a timeless and always fresh looking wardrobe if you see what I mean. Unless you have a very very distinct style that is totally unique to you, but very few people have that and pull it off.

    I am a guy, and will likely use none of this advice as it usually doesn't apply to me. However Justine's thought process is so reasonable it makes a thing I wasn't interested-in in the first place (fashion), less alien 👽 and more understandable.

    Does anyone else here alter their clothes after purchase? I buy both new and second hand clothes and find that because of my shape (top heavy) short waisted I rarely find a perfect fit. I also dislike some details eg. these tabs that hold up a rolled up sleeve, so I cut them off immediately. I will add lace, pockets, motifs etc or shorten or slim down a sleeve to make it suit me more. I am about to change some assymetric hemmed items to straighten them up, I don't know if it will work but I no longer feel good in them. Hopefully each item will have a new lease of life! Fingers crossed!

      I've started doing this. I bought a dress secondhand online the other day, and the top of it just did not fit at all, so I cut off the top and made it into a really cute skirt. I also cut off those sleeve tabs on most of my shirts.

      I used to and I don't know why I stopped. I'm petite so I would hem pants but also change where the knee of the pants was. I've also changed waist bands completely, especially if the original was elastic.
      I like changing the buttons on a garment...they can be cheap quality or dated

      I do. I am too small to find clothes that fit in stores in the US so I buy something close in size and I tailor it. Now I'm addicted and even in the rare event that I find something that actually fits, I still find some fault with it and I end up tweaking! I am not very good at sewing, but I do what I can.

    This book is outdated for sure. Fashion has different rules today than 30 years ago. Now almost everything is fine to wear. Fashion started recycling and changing much faster in the 90s. Now its life cycle is even shorter, so is the timeline in which it's recycled.

    Someone in a fashion book mentioned if you wore the style in the past and it was in style then , " don't wear it again " . The reason is because you might be age inappropriate . Example would be 80's style on a 50 + . Speaking from my own experience . I learned a lot from this book and I will stick to the basic rules of fashion . Classic styles are always elegant .

    I have to think about a friend of mine, he is well-known in the local arts community and he has been wearing a beard all his life. The past few years hipsters have been inviting him to 'beard groups' and such on Facebook. He told me he despises hipsters and he can't wait till the trend is over and they shave off their beards again...

    I liked your channel before coming across this video but after this one I love it, and have subscribed. I really loved the quote about trends, and I mostly agree with it,but like someone has already commented, I too think that the timeline has sped up. The 70's fashion is back in vogue, and a few years ago the 1960's had made a comeback. Now the cycle is more like 20 - 40 years, and it recycles often. Think 90's grunge look and Brown lips that Kylie Jenner has made fashionable again. Again, I really loved this video and how elegantly you handled the question.

    We are about two years behind Europe on fashion trends in the US. So many women are still wearing painted-on skinny jeans with kimonos, ugh. I look at European channels and brands to see what will hit our local shops in two years, or more. One year from Paris to New York, one year to San Francisco, Seattle, Florida, etc. Three years or more to the mid-west, if ever. It’s now the end of July 2020 and they don’t seem to know about how COVID19 changed clothes and footwear.

    I don't care about trends anymore. I am 51 year old North European living in Australia. I agree Justine about almost everything you said. Colors. Your skin type. Etc Also as we share love to Japanese culture I studied and watched a lot of internet material about Japanese culture. At 51 you need really good quality and comfortable materials. Australia has really good merino wool. I have a lot in grey. I also love navy. Burgundy. When I was younger I experimented with crazy colors but to be honest never cheap fabrics.
    Now I like some crazy accent LOL but only as accessory.
    So I agree with you - find your colors, shape, fabrics. I am crazy about silk. It's your second skin. Read and studied a lot. When you are young you don't care LOL I live in a country which is not genetically suited so I have to adjust. I trust my body. It loves silk, linen, etc

    It seems to me about every 30 years or so the style of that time is back for a flash in the pan. Remember when bell bottoms came back not long ago? Now neon and 80's type fashion of a sorts is back. God help us when 90's fashion returns!

      Pssst, 90s came back into mainstream fashion about 18 months ago in the UK and Australia (not sure about the rest of the world). It was unflattering 20+ years ago, and it's not improved with time. Teenage girls seem to like it, though.

    I saw a video saying a black blazer is a classic piece that never goes out of style. Then I saw 3 different videos saying blazers are out, blazers need to be a boyfriend blazer, etc. I can’t keep up. I remember when I entered the work force as a young woman, another woman had this extensive wardrobe of expensive suits that were all extremely dated (in my mind) and I felt sorry for her! I don’t want to be that person!

    I live in Canada and the trend continues to be lulu lemon, especially for high school and university students...workout wear as day to day wear, but many can also wear those clothes to work....so I think that's why leggings under everything are also a trend eg. under short dresses.
    it seems like the only pant style where I live now is skinny, and that's not the best look for me. I'm on the east coast so our winters aren't snowy or pleasant, just cold and damp, so I think that affects how well we dress in winter. we just want to stay warm and dry.

    WEAR WHAT YOU WANT TO WEAR.
    I don't agree with stop dressing with something that you like because OTHER PEOPLE tell you it isn't cool anymore.
    If you got the balls, then You must not care about trends and wear whatever you want whenever you want.

    We all follow trends, subconsciously if not consciously. Otherwise, even if we shopped in vintage stores we would buy something that people might laugh at us wearing - believing we are dressing up in costume or a themed party. Being edgy and different isn't about being an odd-ball if style and social acceptance is still our goal. So we all know what is 'acceptable' and 'safe' for our times, even if we buy from more unusual stores or try to develop our own style.

    Hi, Justine, yes, so funny is this feeling about trends! I was brough up in a hudge city and european community and then lived in underdeveloped region - and what you say is so true, because I have experienced really in situ that the perception of "fashion" is "ridiculously" local and even very, very socially determined in more hidden places of the world.
