    Justine you must know that the french style you are describing is only representative of a veeeeeeeery small part of the french population. Most of us don't really care about the 2 color max rule, or have heirloom jewellery from their ancestors. The people you are describing are the "upper crust" of the PARISIAN population, and older women. Young women are just like everybody else in europe, shopping at h&m for poor quality clothes and following trends. Maybe some decades ago there was a particular "french style" but now fast fashion and internet has made it obsolete. I know you are a stylist so you are mythologizing the "french style", but please be honest with people. French style may exist but it is not the regular people style.

    Justine, everything you say is so true, I'm french too and most of those cultural things like light make up, the pair of ballerina, the fitted blazer (I have since for ever), the heels (I was recently in Poland and I live in London, there the women are ultra feminine like knee high boots, mini skirts and dresses, super long hair and mostly skinny!), even all the things in my purse is exactly like you said (it's like a survival kit). In the US, the workplace dress is bit more formal where there are 4 seasons than in the warmer climate such as the south or western part of the country. Also your industry dictates the level of style and formality. Retail is certainly casual but can be edgy depending on personal style, whereas finance is formal and probably mkre classic

  • @LuluGardien
    @LuluGardien 6 лет назад +156

    I've lived in both Sweden and Paris for several years (and I am German) and these things you mentioned are really generalized. In the end, everyone everywhere is an individual and decides for themselves what to wear. Of course, there is a difference as to what people feel comfortable with but I think especially for what Justine said, most people here in Paris also throw things on in the morning because they need to wear something. This is a really "white-people-elite-french" way of dressing that Justine described and it is not at all okay to leave out what people really wear in France, because essentially France is not just french fashion, but it is African, Arab, European. It isn't just chic and classic, but there is a lot of hip-hop culture, bohemian looks, there is also a lot of poverty in Paris, because France is one of the developed, rich countries with the highest unemployment rate. Basically, I have never seen someone dressing like Justine, although I am at a good and "formal" university where some people even come to class with blazers. Often people wear high heels but SO many people love sneakers here, there are bright colors in the African dresses and there are women with a lot of makeup. But then again, people sometimes wear makeup, sometimes they don't. One must not generalize and one shouldn't through out these rules of fashion to people because they will think this is the reality. It's not. just be yourself and never let anyone tell you that a nation has a specific way of doing fashion. people in France look like Jenny and people in Sweden look like Justine sometimes. And in Germany, there is both styles as well. Because it's not about where you're from but about who you are as an individual.

    • @LuluGardien
      @LuluGardien 6 лет назад +31

      @Iranier1 That's true, I respect their opinion of the fashion world. But that's not what they're saying. If they want to give an expert opinion on the fashion industry, they're much much educated than me. That is why I watch and enjoy Jenny's videos. But this video is not about the fashion world but about "French/ Scandinavian style" which refers to everyday outfits and then, in this video, they should not use generalizing formulation, because the general population does is not reflected by the things mentioned in the video. All I am saying is, this "french style" that Justine describes reflects a VERY VERY small percentage of French women and there are so many more "French styles" that should be at least mentioned.

    • @myssangela4872
      @myssangela4872 6 лет назад +16

      what you're saying is 100% true, but we must not confuse the general fashion "rules" of a nation with what people actually wear in their everyday life. i live in italy, and even if I hate the current fashion trends and I don't follow them, I still have an idea of the "average italian" 's look. I think it's about what's more popular, not what you dress like every single day of your life. I have friends who, just like me, wear whatever they want whenever they want it. I also have really stylish friends who sometimes go around in an anonymous jumpsuit and no makeup if they feel like it (or need to). and sandals with socks, for example, is something no one would wear anyway, even tho I'm pretty sure there _is_ someone who does that. just like you see people with hip hop, street, classy, sporty etc style because of course there are. But I do also understand that if I'm able to keep in mind all of this while watching this video, a lot of people will just assume that's how everyone dresses like, so... how do you escape this circle?

      Then you never walked long enough in sandals in hot weather. Because if you do your feet get extremly sweaty especialy if the sandals are of synthetic materials and if often chafes the skin. Because socks in sandals are considered so horrorable lot's of people wear sneakers but if you have very hot temperatures the feet will will also sweat. There is a reason why so many people suffer athletes feet/foot fungus.

    • @lepeypylapa

      I am a south american girl living in Germany. I do not get it either. The whole Point of sandals is that your feet are free and can breathe. We wear sandals all day long, by 30C and don't have this problem. If your sandals are hurting your skin, they are probably bad quality PU or just the wrong fit for you. This is the reason why I only buy leather. Socks and sandals is a huge No-go! Only people >60 wear them in Germany.

      It depends more on the industry you're in than the country. My swedish parents wear formal attire both on and off work, and this is normal where we live. So I don't agree with the girl in the video that her way necessarily is the "scandinavian way".

    • @LoveeAsHell
      @LoveeAsHell 5 лет назад +3

      Ron But it's wrong! I'm french and I can assure you it depends where you're working! She's describing the cliché bobo Parisian way of style here! But in reality, we're more casual than classy ^^' You can see it in the streets! 80% of French people are wearing t-shirt/jeans/sneakers every day at work, about 15% are wearing chino pants or skirts or dresses with rather heels or derbies, something preppy but not too formal, and only 5% are going to work dressed in a suit! If you're working in the finances or in something where you need to be uptight then yes you have to look formal and classic!

Being that you could dress Scandinavian, you could dress minimalist, classic, tomboy, girly, French style is popular right now. You can also wear lots of denim. Nothing will stand out especially in the cosmopolitan cities. Everyone is doing different things, less cohesion than a variety of culture and style. I enjoy that aspect of the States.

    As an Australian middle age woman both styles resonate however I think the Scandinavian style suits just a little more to my lifestyle as it seems not so uptight for the laid back Aussie "middle age" genre. Really good u-tubing from both sides.. Appreciate the effort of both women and opinions and can wholly value the look and style of both region's which is purely an aesthetically styled version turned to each woman inddivudally, no matter what country they are born or assigned with. :) Thank-you lovely ladies for a wonderful insight.

    Hi Jenny- I came here from Justine's channel and I am happy to find you- subscribed! I have family in Iceland (I have been there 8 times) and also in Paris (never been there) but I am not Icelandic or French, so this was very interesting to me. I always wear flats- clothes always casual, mostly classic- colours are black, white, natural colour linen. I wear my hair 'classic French' (bangs, shoulder-grazing and not really styled, but I also use your bun style. I live in Washington state, USA.

    Fascinating. Here in Ireland I think we would all have been brought up for years on the more French way of dressing not realising it was particuarly French. I never realised how strong these unspoken 'laws' were until Justine spoke of them. They feel intrinsically 'right' to me. Though I really like the Scandi edgy, casual and cool look I don't think i could pull it off.

    Idk how it is in Sweden, but in Denmark, I rarely see anyone with lipstick and there is really no reason to wear sunglasses for most of the year. We only get around 3 weeks of actual summer, so...
    As a fellow Scandinavian woman, a thing that I would never leave the house without, besides my wallet, keys etc. would be a really moisturizing chapstick. It gets really cold here, even in the summer so your lips can easily get dry and crackly.

    I am now over here re answering these questions but from New Zealand
    1. What do you wear for work? Now most offices have a uniform, pencil skirt or suit pants, shirt, blazer in company colours and a small logo somewhere. Simple. If you choose, probably the same but in black, or you wear your little black dress. Heels are common in offices. Many kiwis work manual jobs so farms is short shorts (stubbies), swazie singlet, swanndri jacket in red/black or blue/black checks and complete the look with a bucket hat and gumboots. Everywhere else really has uniforms or you end up in a high-vis suit.
    2. New Zealand style in 3 words: Practical. Casual. American. We don't take things seriously here and everything's quite laid back, wear what feels good. But we follow American trends mostly.
    3. What would a kiwi never be caught dead in? In a country where men wear shorts shorter than women, most things go. What would we never wear? Anything too formal without reason, dressing up here without an event to go to is weird. We do wear nice clothes but it's kept casual for dinner and such. No one owns an evening gown, it's just that little black dress, again. On the fur matter, you get A LOT of possum fur here. Possums are a huge pest and have to be killed to protect native birds. So to make use of all the animals that have to be killed we use their fur for all sorts. Normally its woven with wool to make it softer and warmer but sometimes the animal is skinned and used to make a jacket or line gloves. It's super expensive because you don't get much fur from one animal and they're hard to catch. We also have a lot of sheep and cow skins, not to waste the skin of dairy or wool farm animals when they reach the end of their life.
    4. colour scheme: Anything goes, but neutrals are normally the go to, there's really no rules on what you can and cant mix here. Right now yellows, oranges, browns and reds are popular.
    5. What would a kiwi never leave the house without? A jersey or jacket since the weather changes at any given moment, maybe not in summer. But in summer definitely a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are a must! CFCs have destroyed the ozone pretty bad along with other causes, the burn time here in NZ is 7-10 minutes. There's 67,000 new cases of skin cancer here a year, compared to a total of 16 000 for all other types of cancer. We only have 4.5 million people. Slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat and wrap on some sunglasses

    In Canada, I'm a uni student and I wear a blazer with dark pants and rain boots (because Vancouver), but I have class mates that wear slippers and sweat pants, so in this community it's up to you. In terms of work, I would say it depends where you work, everything from shorts and a tshirt to a full suit.

    Thank you fordoing this video, it was very interesting. I come from an area of the United
    States that has a lot of descendants of Scandinavian immigrants, people who
    immigrated in the 1800's. The style is very conservative and sometimes,
    outdated. It is interesting to hear that the Swedish women dress in very modern
    and trendy styles.

    I'm from Finland but I spend quite a bit of time in Sweden and have a bunch of friends there, and while I'm sure we're generally a bit more casual than the French, you most definitely see suits in the street. Bankers, lawyers and businessmen and -women will wear formal clothing to work. I study international law at uni and while I wear yoga pants to campus, a lot of business students dress pretty formally even to class.

    Having had both French and Swedish girlfriends, when younger, my impression is that you can't really generalize about French or Swedish women . . . although it is much easier to get to know a French woman, if she really cares for you. My Swedish girlfriend was a law student at Lund University and President of the college division of the Center Party. She might dress conservatively at the university, but loved to go topless, when we were hiking or biking in the country. My French girlfriend was a millionaire from being an actress and singer. I lived on a farm in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley at the time. The moment she fell in love with me, she ceased buying expensive fashions and thoroughly enjoyed dressing like a peasant girl or hippie in rural Champaign-Argonne.

    This topic was so spot on for me. I am from Central Europe but have moved to Norway years ago and am constantly split between what to take from the Scandinavian style and what to take from French/European style. I find that a great issue with the Scandinavian style is being oblivious to body shapes. Mostly because a lot of nordic women have a build that allows them to break the rules (tall and slender). However for me - an inverted triangle petite - the boxy Scandinavian clothes are a recipe for disaster. Whenever I try a winter coat made for Norwegian women I just want to rip it off me cause of how unflattering it is. At the same time though I love how sensible women here are and have added a looot of sneakers and dropped high heels almost entirely. Better for your legs long term and infinitely more comfortable. High heels are just not worth the pain for me anymore. It would be cool to hear from others or from Justine and Jenny what they think might be best of both worlds. I always wonder how the few scandinavian women who are petites deal with the clothing style.
