The band shifted towards old school metal and hardcore punk since The Cult Is Alive (2006). Darkthrone can't be narrowed in to one sub-genre as it draws from so many influences.

Ok so after letting this song digest a bit in my brain gullet and having stumbled on Abbath's new releases, I'm getting way more into this "Black N' Roll" style. I know it's been around awhile, but it's just so damn good.

Paul Womack soulside journey is still great but I meant 1991-1995ish. From Blaze through Total death. Everything since 2003-4 has been great because it’s Darkthrone, but it’s been too punky and not enough raw chainsaw riffs and nazgûl screams for me and few others. Cool mature song on yet another seemingly cool album, and a cool message for the fans! Darkthrone is an important and slightly underrated band, now involved with about 6 genres of metal.
They do not get the respect nor the attention that most other bands get, even of the same generation. Out of Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, and Emperor (and maybe Gorgoroth), Darkthrone gets the least attention and it often slips under the radar even for black metal fans. Their music is maybe the least steered towards near-instant luring in of listeners in an otherwise hard to digest genre, and it takes a calm mind to learn to appreciate their music. So the question is, what world or dimension do YOU live in?
The beginning is slow-paced tempo with old heavy metal feel. Thick c-cassette sound and lemmyish raspy vox. Latter half has nipple hardening quitar and a must-learn-riff.The more I listen the song, the more I love it.
Darkthrone now has my heritage fully covered. First with the classic *Canadian Metal* & now with this *The Hardship of the Scots* representing both my parents. An Aberdonian & a Glasweigan respectively. Cool !!! 🤘🏼

Thanks for keeping us on the loop Fenriz. I like the powerful kickstart, music has to be like beer, alive and cold. The art cover is cool and raw, pure graphite drawing on paper, nothing fancy. The melodic side on the guitar resembles some folk, scandinavian heroic theme, but doom and crust punk is still present. I like the lyrics, they show some attitude! Cool thing i was just listening to leave no cross unturned the other night wondering what have you guys been up to, glad to know a new album is coming out. Greetings from Portugal
set by set, an exciting, atmospheric and emotional journey through sessions with darkthrone during whole their artistic process of creating this very personal album that captures sincere passion and where a most clean form of exposure the feelings is need to tell another musical story.
The first time I listened through it I was like "meh", and it didn't have the instant impact on me that Tundra Leech had when they showed that ahead of the Arctic Thunder release. Having listened to it daily for a week or so I think it's pretty good. Good riffing, and especially the riff towards the end I would describe as epic. So musically it's good. Vocally it's good as well, but it could be higher in the mix - and there's a bit of power lacking in his voice IMO. It sounds like it should I guess, but Ted does have more power in his voice, and I wish he would bring it out. But yeah, good song. I saw someone asking if people would have listened to it if it wasn't Darkthrone. My answer would be probably not, as this is a genre I'm not really into. But when Darkthrone releases new music, I listen to it, and I almost always find something good in their music. They're doing their thing, and doing it well. As most fans, I sometimes find myself wishing they would do songs harkening back to their BM-days, but then again - if their soul is not behind it, why bother? Then people would probably criticize them for copying themselves, and doing it poorly. If you want to listen to BM-Darkthrone, there are many albums already in existence to listen to. IMO musicians are always best when they make music that reflects on their current motivations and inspirations.
I think the lack of power in the voice is a result of the not so cool mixing of the very high reverb on the song. Hopefully its just this song that has that kind of style of mixing the voice. I rarely like it much.
52 years old and just getting into this band wish it didn't take so long. Great stuff
