- In this video, we try out the new Burton Photon Soft Step On Boots at Copper Mountain in Colorado. With the addition of some neoprene sections, these boots are supposed to be the softer version of the regular Photon Step On Boots. Check out the video to see what we think about them!
you are the first to review them as far as I can see on youtube. well done!
Thank you 🙏🏽
that’s awesome well said good info
I commented on another video that the "standard" Step On bindings
arrived a few days ago. I actually looked at the Photon Soft boots but
decided on the "standard" Photon Wide Step Ons for my very first set up
mainly because I need the extra width to keep my feet comfortable. The
boots will arrive in a couple of days. 😎👊 I have no doubt that they will
have more than enough adjustment to keep me happy when I go in the
park. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video.
Keep yourself safe! 😃👍❤️🏂

Thanks Randy! Hope you enjoy them 🤙🏽

@@NHlocalhow do you like them now? I’m in between the same boots as you were, soft vs wide! 🤔
@@marciliopereira9007 I love the setup! Both the boots and the bindings have been great. The only downside is you lose quite a bit of lateral flexibility. For me it's not a big deal.
Thank you for responding.
If you were to choose today, would you pick the regular wide over the soft ones?
I have burton rulers and I’m looking into step ons 🙌🏼 great video
Hi Bryce, glad you liked the video. Thank you 🙏🏽
Mine just came in! Got the soft boot and still feels stiff I can’t imagine the regular one 😂 going to the mountain this weekend so it’ll be my first time with step ons!
Awesome! Those neoprene sections make a difference for sure. Have fun!!
@@themidwestshredderthanks man! Let me tell you. Step on bindings plus these boots are amazing!!!!! I had very very small amount of foot pain at the beginning of my day and but compared to my DC boots I had before just wow! I had a amazing day at the mountain and I am 100% loving Burton step on bindings and their boots!!! I’ve also seen people make videos about their being heel lift but on these 2024 models there was 0 heel lift for anyone wondering. I am excited and want to be back at the mountains asap!!
@@raulmarquez9206 awesome bro!
Great review. I just commented on your binding review asking about the concern I had with boot stiffness. I’m like you….I don’t like an extra stiff boot after 30 years of soft boot riding, but I am over the strap bindings especially riding goofy and tendinitis in my left wrist. I need to research the Burton Women’s Felix. Thanks again for the great reviews. 🏂
No problem, I replied to your other comment 👍🏽
I have the 2024 Photon Soft Step On with the new metal pants clip. After 2 weeks, the metal on the left side simply broke through due to material fatigue.
Hi, which metal part broke through?
I love your videos 😊
Thank you so much 🙏🏽
Copper's not in the MidWest. ;)
I had issues with my right pant leg staying in for some reason. Wrapped some rubber bands around the metal ends, and the added grip helped a lot. Would upgrade to these new clips if they sell them separately.
@@jplpagan haha it’s not but you have to take those trips when the weather is bad here. The day I left to CO it was pouring rain. Today it’s below zero and windy. The Midwest can be rough sometimes 😞 Hopefully Burton will sell them.
@@themidwestshredder bro it was BRUTAL today. no snow in SE Michigan, but the temp hit 0° and winds hit 50mph gusts. Someone actually asked me if I was going snowboarding. 😜
Again on the hometown hero! Am I missing a video somewhere??? 😂 Really good video as always. 👍
I might see if I can buy some new clips. I often find my pants have wiggled out of the current clips from normal riding. I think the deep squats pull them up 😀
That’s a good point about squatting down 👍🏽 I can see how that can happen.
Bought the swath and thought it was too soft. Ordered the photon that should be here this week but now wondering if maybe the photon soft would be a good choice. Long time skier turned snowboarder so maybe I’m just used to the firm boot. Felt like the swath flexed forward too much on toe edge turns.
I think the Photon will be perfect for you 👍🏽
I'm not a fan of BOAs. I wished that the SO Ion's came in 14W. With the pants clip, I have a 34" inseam and even w/ the pants touching the ground, the old clips didn't stay in. Your leg when skating can really extend or something. The new clips work w/ my Burton AK bibs, but not Dead Bird Sabre pants. It might depend where the extra re-inforcement material is placed (Skiing pants are more on the side not back).
Very true. Someone else also mentioned squatting a lot could cause the pants to come out of the clips.
I can't decide if the Photon Soft or the Swath is better
If you like a soft boot, then go with the Swath. If you like a more stiff boot, go with the Photon Soft. Both are great.
I’ve read a lot of reviews saying the regular photons get soft after they break in. I want a boot that I can wear both in and out of the park that will last me several seasons. Do you think the flex in these will hold up, or would it be safer to go with the regular photons?
It would probably be safer to go with the regular photons. The only thing is that they are really responsive and stiff so you would have to get used to that. If you already ride a real stiff set up then it probably won’t be a problem.
Hey there, thanks so much for the review. I have the softs and I like them but am wondering how the softs compare to the regular photons regarding stiffness. I know you’ve ridden both. Are the softs just a little softer or are the normal photons way stiffer than the softs? Thanks for your response. Great channel! Keep it up :)
Hi, they are just a little stiffer. Going onto your heel edge, they feel the same. The only difference is mainly going onto your toe edge. The two neoprene sections on the soft boots give you just a little more flex at the ankle. It makes a difference for me and I love that they added that. The regular photons don’t have that so they’re stiffer in that section. So just a little more stiff than the soft, but not by a lot. Thank you.
Any update on the duration of Photon soft after couple months? Just making sure that they are as durable as others in the category
The are holding up just fine. I plan on riding the same boots this upcoming season. I love the Photon soft.
how much stiffer would you say they are compared to the rulers? normal photons felt just a touch too stiff while the rulers felt completely foldable with them on. it hopefully looks like these aren't quite as stiff as the photons while still giving *some* sort of support
These are the ones you want. Just a little less stiff than the regular photons. They feel nice and snug but just give you a little more flex than the regular photons.
Would you be able to comment on how the following StepOn boots compare in stiffness/tightness? I can't seem to find much brand to brand commentary, only within individual brands. I currently have the Kendos and want something stiffer as I do very little park/freestyle and lean more towards the natural terrain/freeriding side of all-mountain. I just spent a week riding all over Snowbird UT and found myself wanting to adjust multiple times throughout the day, so I also am not liking the traditional laces. Thanks!

Hi, I’m only familiar with the Burton stuff and the DC control.
any idea when they will be back in stock. I live in Europe idk if they still have them in the US but id really like to get them before going
Hi, I’m not sure. Here in the US they have the black ones in stock.
On burton.com
Entire toe box seam failed on both 2022 photons... So yeah was obvious that they were too rigid and transferred all forces to that weak toe seam... both twisting on the toe, and lifting when heel side. This addition of a flexy section would take some pressure off them but I suspect still too much stress on that seam in heel side or twist, but maybe they did some work on the toe seam too.... I was so happy to start with on these, but yeah by day 70 these were junk. I'll see how they evolve over the next few seasons. Wouldn't take much to make them work, but they can't be built like normal snowboard boots and survive my riding - last season showed that.
Hey man, I know this is random, but I was just wondering if you could help me out. I'm looking for some new bindings, and the step ins really intrigue me. I found the Clew's, and am really leaning towards those however I have heard that they seem to be quite heavy especially when riding. Should I go ahead and pre-order them, or maybe look somewhere else like the burton step on's?
Hey no problem. Personally, I prefer the step ons over the clew. Simple design that works great. Light, responsive, and easy to get in and out of. Eliminating the straps is really cool.
I've heard that Burton boots run on the small side. Just curious if you went with your shoe size for the Photon Soft boots or if you went one half-step up. Thanks!
Hi, I went with my shoe size and they were perfect 👍🏽
@@themidwestshredder Thanks for letting me know!
I have the swaths and I like them however…when doing certain tricks I’m getting a lot of play in the heel area. I’ve tried j bars and they are super uncomfortable. It’s gotten so bad that I’m actually using some old Burton custom traditional bindings. Those bindings make my feet feel secure however…straps suck! Not only do I find them annoying to get into but I’m constantly having to ratchet them down (the bindings are in like new condition).
So my question is, does the strap on the photon boots help keep the foot more secure?
Also, in terms of feel, flexiness, and comfort, how does the photon soft compare to the swath?
Thanks!
Photon soft is pretty awesome. It’s stiff enough where you can carve awesome and at the same time it has just that little bit of flex that I need to ride park features comfortably. I would say the stiffness is between the ruler and the regular photon. The snugger strap does help with heel lift for sure.
Compared to the swath, the photon soft is a lot stiffer. It feels awesome though with that neoprene section they added.
