@@themidwestshredder Im looking to buy my son a set of step on bindings and boots. He will only have one board and mostly carve with a little park every now and then. So im looking for a good all mountain set up. Would the genesis binding and photon boot be a good combination. My thinking is the genesis binding is a little softer and the photon boot is a little stiffer but could possibly be loosened up for the park with the ankle boa?
@@michaelsutherland9069 it’s so hard to answer this because we all prefer something different. For overall riding I like the Swath and the Ruler. One of those boots combined with the regular step on binding will work just fine in the park and all mountain. When I go to hit a jump or a rail, I like to be able to make last second adjustments if I need to. With the photon, I feel like it’s a little too stiff and I can’t move around the way I want. If I was just carving though, I would go with the photon or ion. The Genesis binding and the Photon would be a killer set up. Is he a newer rider?

@@jgm113 I had purchased a set of DC control boots and have rode them three or four trips now and after you get them adjusted on your foot and heat molded correctly they are better than the swath I was riding

It’s better to use regular boots with strap bindings, but you can make the step on boots work. Burton doesn’t recommend it.

Great video and information! Definitely wouldn’t recommend using snowboard bindings/boots for wakeboarding. Wakeboard boots are designed for your foot to come out when you have bigger crashes. “Unless you have a system setup”
Thanks man. Yeah that other video was all in fun. I don’t think anyone took it serious. Also, most wakeboard cable park boots are not meant for your foot to come out in big crashes.
I've been riding the ions for the last two seasons and would Definitely say they are significantly stiffer than the photons or the standard ion. Super comfortable, but out of the box closer to the driver x. Thanks for the vids!
agreed , I have step ons and initially had photons. SImply 2 soft...got the ions and its all good.. great product
I also went with Ions, was riding Driver X before. Photons for me were too soft as well. Ions + step on = amazingly good edge to edge response. I tested them and I loved them, tomorrow I'm getting my own with Genesis version.
Whoop Whoop received my Step-on's yesterday and my ION boots.. Ok slapped those bad boys on all good except on the left foot. Just behind the big toe knuckle area theirs some discomfort there.. So i'm going to try molding the liner at the weekend and see if that helps. Buddy just want to say been loving all your Videos and watching them has really helped me make the decision to get some.. Im 50 my son is 14 and i need to get off that lift and riding as fast as i can and get as much of a headstart as possible ... as he's way braver and quicker than me...

I think that the photons are usually the 'go-to' boots for all-mountain riders and from there, people change their boot setup according to their riding style.
I for one ride too aggressively (overpowering the normal boots and bindings) so the stiffness of the photons actually helped me dial it back a bit and help my movements become more precise.
I really wanted to try the DC boots but if they are 'softer' than the photons and with less ankle support, I'll guess I'll skip on them and wait until the variety will increase.
That’s awesome Mike. I can totally see what you’re saying about making your movements more precise. They’re great boots for all Mountain for sure. For what you like, Photon is definitely a better option than the DC.
Next season’s 21/22 DC Judge Step on will be an option for you as they are stiffness rated 8/10 and should be comparable to the Photon.
I have tried on the current DC Control Step On and find that it is about as soft as my Photons that have 4 seasons on them and are getting fairly ‘packed out’. Too soft for me.
@@jhrycun this proved true. I have the Judge and Photon SO, when they're cranked down the stiffness is very similar.

I picked up the DC Controls and used them for the 1st time this past weekend. They were very comfortable and I had a good time all day!

Informative comparison. The DC control is a great add on to the comparison. Just wondering however, for people with wider feets, would you say the DC liners are wider than Burtons, as burtons have a ‘wide’ range.
I definitely feel more space near the toes but I’m not sure how good they would be for someone with wide feet. I have a friend with wide feet and he went one full size up on the regular (non-wide) step on boots and he says he has had no problems. I would probably play it safe and get a wide Burton boot.
I've watched a load of your reviews on the Step on's and I've loved em all - I'm in the market for some and i'm looking at the ION's with a standard set of step on bindings and this maybe sat on top of my 10 year old Burton Vapour.. thanks for the great reviews

Nice comparison review! I did not like the Burton Ruler. Definitely not for those that don't like that super snug heel counter. I love the DC Control. Great comfortable boot and very adjustable.

Hi, not sure how I missed this. Sorry for the late reply. Yeah I can probably make a video about this in the future. Really what I do is buy the epic local pass and I plan a few trips with several friends. We all get a place together and we split the cost of the car rental and the condo. This is where most of the money is spent. For each person it ends up costing $150 to $200 for the place, the condo and food. We usually fly out first flight on Thursday and take the last flight out on Monday night. This gives us a chance to ride Thurs, Friday, Sat, Sun, and Monday. I usually fly on Southwest. They have the best prices round trip and you get 2 free checked bags. I usually only check my snowboard bag with all my gear in it. I’ve purchased round trips for less than $100 at times. The big expense upfront is the epic local but it pays itself off in one trip. My friends and I take 4-5 trips in one season. If one daily pass costs anywhere from $125 - $175, we get our money’s worth easily.
Got the Swats but not enough support on the ankle and heel hold. Got the Ions now and they are the best. The strap realy holds the heel better

Thanks for the videos. Been out of the game for 15 years but restarted this season in Breckinridge and Big bear. Realized I need to upgrade at least my boots on my 2004 Raven Burton board. Few questions. Got a 2022 Burton Ruler step on 10.0 but no medium men’s bindings to be found so late into the season. Found Escapade women Large. Some say it should be same as men’s medium. The boots do click in but all the instructions manual and rages say only use men with men. What are your thoughts. Thanks
Hi, I was always told the men’s boots should only be used with men’s bindings. Men’s highbacks are usually taller than women’s but I have a feeling there are other differences. I have never tried this.
Hey Jimmy, nice overview of the boot options available. I did notice the Ions were missing but also know they are the most expensive and probably the stiffest option. Have you had any experience with them? Wondering if being that stiff would make the setup over responsive or twitchy?
Hi, I don’t have any experience with the ion. Since the photon was already on the stiff side for me, I didn’t want to go any stiffer with the ion. Some people that are hard charging all mountain riders really love the stiffness of the photon and the ion though.
Hi Jonathan. From my experience with the Ions, it is true that these boots are said to be the stiffest and are often discarded for that reason. In my opinion it is a mistake because they CAN be stiff but they don't HAVE to be. Let me explain. I discovered that they are also very versatile because they are very adjustable. You can set them pretty loose if you want to for a smooth cool ride. You can set them pretty stiff and responsive for hard carving precision You can adjust the top part and the bottom part independently and when you know what you like and need according to conditions or what you want to do, the two strings system allows a very precise adjustment. It is not as fast as the Boa system but the versatility and precision is worth it I think. And they are also very lightweight. In a nutshell, maybe not your boots for entry level and intermediate riders, but a high quality all mountain piece of equipment for advanced and somewhat experienced riders

This is so in-depth. Thank you for the great information. I've been wanting to try to the Step-ons. I currently wear an entry level Burton boots and I feel it has some heel lift (I might need a pair with narrower fit). May I ask from your experiences do these Burtons all fit the same in terms of wideness? Which model would you say offer the best ankle support, including DC?
Hi, as far as step on boots go, they are all similar width (not including the wide versions). They all offer good ankle support. The Photon and the ion have the snugger strap so those will offer even more ankle support and can help prevent heel lift. They are on the stiffer side though.
See if you can try a pair in person at a shop so you can feel them out 🤙🏽

I feel like swath is slightly better quality, but love the look of control, and it's slightly more affordable
Everything you said above is correct. The swath is definitely nicer quality. The control had some stitching issues near the toes. My friend still rides his like that and doesn’t have problems. Both will work, just comes down to what you want to spend.
I still ride both step ons and regular strap bindings and while you can strap in a step on boot I'd highly discourage that as they are crazy rigid by comparison. A burton ruler step on is not at all the same as the regular ruler boot. My one complaint with the step on's is makes it feel like your walking in a ski boot again as they have very little ankle flex as no strap is holding that heel in so they have to.
From making Burton Step On videos, the one thing that has blown me away is how different the boots feel to everyone. Believe it or not, some people even think they're too soft. I do agree with you that a step on boot like a ruler is stiffer than a regular step on boot. I remember saying that in some of the old videos.

I’m sorry I’m late to the party on this one. I’m a fairly new rider ( intermediate level) I was originally thinking photon as I do like to carve but mostly playing around doing tricks and bits on the mountain. Would you still recommend the swath for that or does the photon sound better for me ?
Photon is on the softer side and gives you more ankle movement because of the articulated cuff. It's still good for carving but not as stiff and responsive as the photon. All preference on what you plan on doing. If carving is mainly your thing, go photon.

For me, all the advantage of the Photon, but feels comfortwize like the Swath

I will say that I tried DC Control boots and thought they were soft, sloppy and left me feeling a serious lack of performance.
@@joshuasills definitely go with the photon soft. The photon soft has the perfect combination of stiffness and flex. You'll be able to carve just fine at slow speeds. Super comfortable and it is a higher quality boot than the DC for sure. I get what you mean about the DCs.

Good work bro! I heard that DC step-on boots aren't as durable as Burtons. People said, DC boot's cable plastic guide can break easily. Is that right? What's your experienced?
In my opinion, the finish on the Burton boots is better quality. My friend that owns the DC boots has not had problems with the plastic guides but he did mention loose stitching near the front toes.

has anyone ridden both the dc control and the burton photon ? Im debating switching over to step ons and I currently ride the DC controls with strap bindings. I do like the control so far. Never tried the burton boots so unsure. Thinking of trying photons
Hi Jay, I’ve ridden both. The photon is stiffer and is better quality in my opinion. The control is comfortable and is a little wider than the photon near the toes, but Burton does offer a wide option for the photon. I was not a big fan of the finish on the control Step Ons. My friend who owns them had some of the stitching coming apart near the toes. After he told me, some of the viewers also told me about this. The photon is stiff and is great for carving if that’s what you’re into. Another option that you can look into is the DC judge step on if you want to stick with DC. The quality of the materials appears to be nicer. It is stiffer than the control. If you like a little softer, comfort, and ease of getting in and out, the Burton Swath is amazing.
I would love the ritual as im a beginner however, it doesnt have a wider version which felix have.
Have you looked into the limelight? That’s also a comfortable, softer boot but I’m not sure if they sell it in wide.
Jimmy great bid again! Just got a step on setup. When stepping in, do u face the board parallel to the mountain facing uphill or downhill. I had a heck of a time the first time trying to step on and keep the board from sliding. Tried to kick a groove in tbe snow, but it was to icy and hard packed to create that snow lip to hold me in place.
You can learn to step on while moving too. I actually find it easier especially when the conditions are icy and hard packed like you said. A bit of a learning curve but once you get it, you're golden. It's honestly the best thing about having them, makes it worth paying the pretty penny to own Step Ons
Of course, this only works when there's a flat-ish section at the top of the run when you get off the lift 😅
If you’re already on a steeper part of the mountain and looking to Step On you should be facing downhill. This will allow you more leverage to engage your heel cleat first. Once your heel cleat is engaged, start riding and get onto your toe edge to engage the toe cleats.
Dude, I just got my '22 Step on bidding and boot setup, and it was really helpful watching your videos to help me decide! I got them mounted up, but I did have a question for you - there seems to be some give between the board and the baseplate when flexing back and forth on my floor (just got them mounted a couple of days ago). The screws are all tight, but I have noticed the gas pedal squish stuff makes up part of the base, so maybe the squish is by design? What do you think?
Hi Alan, if the screws are nice and tight and you have just a little play between the binding and the board when you flex back and forth, it'll be ok. Which boots did you get?
@@themidwestshredder thanks for replying- I got the Ruler. I used to ride the K2 Maysis, so I was going to get the swath, but could not find in my size. Since trying the ruler, though, it feels great, and the internal man hold similarly to the double-boa Maysis.
Going to re-check those screws - I really think it’s just the natural flex given the squish material on the heel side base of the binding.
What forward lean setting do you like?
@@alanthompson9240 ok cool. I love the rulers. Comfortable right out of the box. When I’m riding a lot of park here in the Midwest, I don’t run forward lean. When I’m in CO though, I put them on F3 even if I make laps in the park 👍🏽
totally helpful, thank you! Can't find review of the Lotus step on anywhere. Question: If i try on a regular Burton boot and a DC lotus regular boot, would they fit the same as the Step On version? Asking because so many places are sold out of step on and I hate to buy a boot online not sure if they will feel good on me, but I may have to. I'm thinking if the regular boot fits the same, I can try those on in store to make that determination.
You’re welcome 👍🏽 Yeah they should fit the same. It’s getting a little late in the season already and if you can wait, Burton should be releasing the new updated binding with the new toe hook before the start of next season. I have a feeling they will sell a kit to retrofit the old binding but not 100% sure. It’s called the escapade. You will get the new binding and will be able to try the boot in person also. Just FYI, I wear a size 9 running shoe and ride size 9 DC and Burton boots.

Excellent review! I’m using the SO Photon since 3 season, I’m thinking to buy the swath to have the versatility to ride standard strapped binding (I will probably make a day or two splitboarding next season) do you think I will make it?
Hi Daniel, it will probably work if you remove the rear cleat. Just depends which binding you use.

No problem Devin, let me know if you have any questions. If you like to mainly ride all mountain and you like to carve, the photon and the ion are great. They are on the stiffer side and super responsive. The ruler, swath, and dc control are still nice and responsive but more on the medium flex side. I tend to use the swath and the ruler the most because I get the movement that I want in my ankles when I want to hit a box or a rail. All are nice though.
I actually cut a hole on my inshore so I can ride comfortably lol. A hack for wide food peeps. Does the DC boots feels wider? I have the ruler one.

Ive ordered the Ritual (Swath) Step On for my wife. With both Boas pretty tight, do you think that you are approaching stiffness anywhere close to the Felix (Photon)?
She currently rides Felix in regular strap binding boots, but I figured that maybe too much response in Step On.

Even with the ritual being super tight, it won’t be close to the stiffness of the felix (step on version) because of the articulated cuff. The upper portion is pretty flexible. It’s such a good comfortable boot for everything though. I think she’ll enjoy it. Good choice on that one. Unless she is a super aggressive all mountain rider, I don’t see her not liking the swath. 👍🏽

@@wheaty64 with my strap bindings I mostly used DC boots. My favorite boot was the kush. It was a little bit on the stiffer side (7/10). It was a laced boot with a boa that would tighten at the ankle.

They run true to size. I have a buddy that wears 9.5 shoe and wears a 9.5 DC step on boot. It fits comfortably for him. I wear a 9 shoe and wore these same boots and I could tell that they were a little bigger than my Burton step on 9 boots but they still felt great. Unless you have a wide foot, I wouldn’t go much bigger.

hey jimmy i have the photon in 9.5 but it hurts my pinky toe after every run. i got a pair of 10's in the dc control for a good deal. how do you think it compares?
DC controls will probably work for you. They have more space near the front toes. I feel like all the Burton boots are a little tighter than the DCs. The DCs are comfortable and ride good. They’re not as stiff as the Photons but still responsive. My buddy rode them this season and he was really happy with them.

Bought size 10.5 burton's, but my regular shoes size is 10. Somehow, it was really narrow and tight inside the boot, now I re ordered an 11 DC Shoes Control ones since store was out of Burtons for that size. Although I heard some guys that usually wear 10, go for 9 with snowboarding shoes and they always recommend going 1 down from regular shoe size. I'm really weirded out by this since 10.5 was too small for me. Maybe its just Burtons? But then again, now I pray that DC one's at size 11 will fit me because no local stores had any to try on in person so I had to go with online retailer. Anyone had similar experience?
The DC control is wider at the toe box. I think you’ll be fine. Some people size down with snowboarding boots because over time the boots pack out. In other words, when they get broken in, they can stretch and can get a little bigger. For me, I wear my normal shoe size with Burton boots. All of our feet are different though.
@@themidwestshredder Got my pair just today. Comfort wise they are nice. However, I have a question. How much should the heel lift inside the boot? When my knees are bent and I'm standing on flat ground, heel feels in place and I'm somewhat touching front of the boot with my toe. Toes are not bent, not crammed, feels alright. When walking boot feels also quite good.
Although if I try to lift my heel inside the boot as if I'd be maneuvering on snowboard or hitting uneven surface, it slides up a bit but not too much. If I try to force heel lift inside the boot by bending forward more and trying to stand on forefront of my feet, I can lift it from what it feels quite a bit. Therefore, I'm a bit unsure if this is the right fit. I take it heel should never lift at all even if forced, right?
I'll give these boots a day of walking at home to shape/mold around my foot to see if they get more loose around the heel. A bit confused if this is how they should feel, and quite worried if they'll get more loose over time, as that would mean all the weight of my body would mostly be on my forefront foot if the heel will start lifting up on uneven surfaces.
Any tips, or observations from your long time experience with boots and snowboarding? :) Also my feet length in centimeters is 28, the boot length is 29.5 according to manufacturer. Downsizing would bring it to 28.5cm. I kinda don't want to buy 28cm exact, as feet expands from blood pressure, and I already tried 28cm ones from Burton and it was just crammed.
For reference what the manufacturer writes;
29.5cm - US 11.5
29cm - US 11
28.5cm - US 10.5
28cm - US 10
Maybe I should order a pair of 11 to try them on at the same time and see which ones fit better? Like 11.5 feels great size wise, its just that I think the inner sock boot will loosen up and my heel will just start lifting. At the moment when they are fresh of the box, heel does not lift when walking, but if I try I can lift it just slightly, and a lot more if I really force it. Also I have this fear that if I order US 10.5 they might be too small, not even talking about US 10. Since I've read a couple of reviews, and majority are saying that they had to upscale one size from their usual burtons/normal shoe size. The length of the boot from manufacturer is somewhat misleading in my opinion just from trying 11.5.

Ciao, I am 56 years old ... with a lot of riding experience, but now I need to ride quietly,without making so much effort and without hurting myself.... i bought the Step On Binding, but the boot no yet, which step on boot do you recommend?, a model that fits well and is comfortable, no hard stiff, no park, no jump, just fun. Hi Davide, the boot i would suggest for you is the Swath. It is comfortable and not stiff. You can put them on super fast and take each one off in seconds after you are done riding. They ride well too. One of my favorites.

What are your favorite boots to ride? Been watching all your videos and it seems like you preferred the Rulers. Bindings/Boots(Rulers) are showing up today unfortunately haven’t been able to find anything local to try in person. So I’m hoping I won’t need to return and change size or style of boot.
Hi, I prefer the ruler bc of how simple it is and the medium flex. I also love the swath and that’s the boot I’ve been using lately. It’s a little softer, but They’re easy to put on, take off, and super comfortable. The photon is good too but too stiff for me and the way I like to ride. 👍🏽
@@themidwestshredder would you say the Swath fit true to size for you compared to your street shoes? I ordered a size 10 in the rulers because my old ride boots were size 10 but typically in street shoes I’m a 9 to 9.5.
@@h1ghVolTTagE all the step on boots I’ve used fit true to size to my street shoes. I wear a 9 and use a 9 step on. They feel snug but that’s how I like them. I also tried a half size bigger once and they were still comfortable 👍🏽

@@themidwestshredder I’ve been wearing the Rulers around the house for the last few days and not sure if I’m just cranking the BOA’s too tight or the fitment isn’t great with my foot. Was able to find a couple pairs of the Swath’s online in a 9.5 that I’m thinking about ordering and sending the rulers back.
Does any step on boot work with all of the step on bindings? Like do the clips line up on all of them?

Hi Jimmy, I just ordered the DC step on boots. I read the reviews on Amazon and found some concerning things:
1. Boa system fragile (they posted pictures on the broken piece)
2. Stitching quality is sub-par
3. There is alot more flex on the 2 pins in the front. ( they move more when trying to step. It's not as hard in the front side like the Burton boots)
Can you please confirm on your end if these are valid? Much appreciated 👍🏻
Hi Joe, I did get in touch with my friend who owns the DC step on boots after I read your comment. He rode them during the season and can answer this better. This is what he said.
1. Never had any problems with the BOA system.
2. He did mention that there was an area near the front toes on one of the boots where the stitching was a little loose. Nothing big but he did notice it.
3. He did not have any problems stepping into the binding all season. I rode with him a lot and I never noticed him having this problem. When I used the boots I did not notice any difference stepping into the bindings compared to my Burton boots. The boots had more toe space at the front and a little less ankle support like I mentioned in the video but no problems getting into the binding.
Joe, I can tell you from riding the Burton Ruler, Swath, and Photon that none of them have any of the problems you mentioned just in case you decide to return the DCs to go with the Burton.

I just bought the Ruler step on and i am watching this video wondering if i have made a mistake... Since I mainly like hard carving maybe i should have gone with with the Photons..... Do you think that i made a mistake??? :D
If you like a very stiff boot and you like to carve, I would’ve gone photon. However, the ruler will still carve nicely with the Step Ons. It’s not as stiff but it’s comfortable and gets the job done everywhere. I also like the Ruler in the park. Really it comes down to personal preference. You like stiff, then photon. You like mid flex, go ruler.
I had to sell my Rulers. They had too many painful pressure points and they didn't hold the feet very good.

As far as fit, do you think the DC’s are the same length as the Burtons. I wear a 10 in Burton, would I order the same in DC?
Yes I believe they are consistent in size. DC control is a little wider at the toe box area from my experience.
Just to confirm. A DC boot is 100% wider. Even wider than a Burton Wide boot. I ordered both to see which I liked and returned the pair I didn’t like. I could not stand the Burtons (Photon, Wide) for more than 10 minutes because they were still to narrow. The DC (Control, standard width) width felt amazing out of the box and throughout the day. Snug but not painful.
The DC Control stepons were the original model that were a little stiffer than the newest version.
Hey Jimmy, what do you think about buying women's step on boots as men? I got the women's pink re:flex step on bindings cuz i really wanted the colour way, and i'm a size 8 men's so i was gonna get the size 9 lotus for women and use the women's bindings, do women's boots tend to fit differently compared to men? I bought based on mondo, and size 8 men's and size 9 women are both 26cm mondo size.
Hi Ben, from what I understand, women’s boots aren’t as wide as men’s boots. At least that’s what I’ve been told. Also, the men’s highback are taller than the women’s.

@@CryoBio I think you’ll be fine. It’ll still be really responsive. Even without the highbacks, the step Ons work well.
Hey, so I work at a store where someone just returned brand new Burton step on bindings and ruler boots. They are met exact size and I’ve tried them on and the boots fee very comfortable. I bought Burton mission bindings and Burton moto boots a while ago but am looking at returning them to get the step ons instead. I would get both the boots and the bindings for a total of $410. After returning the missions and motos, it would only be an extra $140 for me to pay. I live in an area with small hills and want to move out west to snowboard at bigger resorts. Would these be worth it for me to make the swap? I am 20 years old and weigh 170Lb. Would the bindings break down eventually? Thanks!
100% worth to get them at that prize. That’s your chance to try them out. If you don’t try them out, you will never know. They will last, trust me. I beat on mine a lot in the park, here in the Midwest, and out west in CO and they have held up really well. Actually last season was the first season I didn’t break a part on a binding and it was with the step Ons. If for some reason the toe hooks wear down, Burton will replace that part for free. It’s easy to change out. The boots are quality boots too. Go for it man.

They worked awesome and I honestly can’t see myself going back to straps even after just 1 day on the step ons. They are just so much more convenient and I didn’t feel unsafe on them at all

Ordered a pair of the Acid Wash Swaths just now in size 12, but been seeing online a lot of people complaining that it’s uncomfortable so they have to go up in size & other accounts saying it’s only uncomfortable for a few days then it’s molds in nicely. Not sure if that was only for the 20-21 models as I haven’t seen much feedback for the 22 model (if they did anything different) any feedback from yourself or other riders? Should I go up to 12.5 or a 13? Do they make it in a “wide” version? Or just go get it heat molded professionally at the local Burton store in Tahoe?
Hi Jared, when you get them, put them on and walk inside your house. If they’re just a little tight, that’s ok. If your toes are kind of touching the front of the boot and it’s not uncomfortable when you walk, you’re going to be good. That’s how mine were and they feel great when I ride them. If it’s uncomfortable when you walk and your toes are curled up, go a half size bigger. Trust me, you’re going to know for sure as soon as you try them. Good choice man, I love the swath. Super comfortable and it’s the easiest boot to get in and out of. Let me know how the fitment is for you when you try them.

I also heard from a Burton Store associate earlier today that last years model was having that issue so they redesigned the foot area for the 22 model! So fingers crossed 🤞 I saw your video last night of you going into the Burton store and seen the Acid Wash color way and I HAD to have it since I got the acid wash bindings. I didn’t see that color anywhere though when I purchased the boots & bindings so I had to do some digging since they are super hard to find 👌
Btw, they don’t offer the swath in wide. They only have the photon wide. My friend Ron has wide feet and at the time he bought his boots, Burton did not offer a wide version. He went a half size up and he was good to go. No problems at all 👍🏽

As a park rider, I prefer a boot with some flex. Would you say the controls are softer than the swaths when they are loosened? Or are they comparable?
Hi James, they are comparable but I would say the Swath have more flex. They are also better quality in my opinion than the DCs. The swath are light, have nice flex, and they are super easy to put on and take off. I love those boots.

If you like to aggressively carve don't use the Ruler step on. Nearly broke my left ankle (very bad sprain) when I lost an edge and wiped out. I would never have this issue with standard bindings, so riders who carve a lot I think need something more stiff. Looking to get the Ion.
I tried on the Ruler at my local shop and within 4 mins my outer feet started burning. The sales guy recommended me getting the Photon wide. Is the DC control wider than the Ruler? Also do you know if DC sizing is the same as Burton? Thanks for the videos! Your videos got me curious to trying out the Step on.
The DC control is definitely wider at the toe box but the quality of that boot is questionable. My friend mentioned to me that some of the stitching is coming apart near the toes on his. I’ve had other viewers tell me the same. The judge looks to be better quality but I haven’t tried that boot. Did you try out the wide photon to see how that felt?
@@themidwestshredder Thanks for the reply. My local shop only had the Ruler for the Step on. They suggested that I order the Photon wide from Burton to try. After seeing the price and not being able to try it on first, I was hoping for another alternative. I guess I'll wait til next year to see if more companies will come out with more boots for the Step on. Because of your review on the Clew, I have it on preorder. But man, waiting til next year is just too long. lol

@@flyinby82 I have the burton photon wide. I have very wide feet (EEE). foot size is 8.5 if i remember and I had to wear the 9, out of the box it felt okay but as soon as I made the boots snug my foot was cramping and hurting after 1 run. I heat molded the boot after 3 riding sessions, and it is infinitely better. This is my first season snowboarding so I can't say how its normally supposed to feel but before I would have to take a breather after 2 runs and release the boas and shake my foot, now i can ride all day. Hope that helps.
@@flyinby82 You can always buy it from Burton and return it if it doesn't fit. It costs like $6 to send it back.
I just spent fifteen minutes waiting for a review of the Ion Step On boot.
I really wanted to include the ion boots in this video but I didn’t have the funds to buy the boots. In the thumbnail, you can clearly see the Ion boots aren’t there. RUclips is something I do for fun and to help people but the money comes out of my own pocket.
@@themidwestshredder I just scored a pair of used 2022 Ions for $325, so I hope they are as good (or better) than my 2019 Ions for my strap bindings. Now I just need to find some step on bindings on sale. I used to rock the step in system from years ago, and I was devastated when they were discontinued. Hopefully, these are a good substitute; they look superior.

Which boot did you end up liking best for your warpig?
On my warpig I’ve only tried the photon and the ruler. If you like a stiff boot that’s good for carving and all mountain riding, I would go photon. If you like a medium flex boot for everything including park, I would go ruler. I rode mostly the ruler. I prefer a medium flex boot. Any of these burton boots plus the DC would ride great with the warpig. It’s all personal preference 👍🏽

I’ve heard people talk about this but I’ve never experienced this myself. I’ve used all the boots in this video. From what I understand, it has a lot to do with the fit.

Sorry I’ve never purchased or used the ion boots. However, many of the viewers do say they are stiffer than the photon.

I have a question! I bought the Large step on binding, but I’m a size 10.5 (I haven’t bought my boots yet). The size guide online says that the large bindings are for size 11 boots and up. Am I gonna be ok with the Large bindings with 10.5 boots? Thanks!
Hi Adam, with a 10.5 boot, you want the medium binding. If the boot is too small for the binding, it’s not going to work correctly. My buddy is a 10.5 and he uses the medium binding. Double check that you’re for sure a 10.5 in Burton step on boots before making a final decision. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Unfortunately, my wife got me large bindings from Burton online back in March, and I’m not sure if they will exchange them for a medium, especially since she deleted the email receipt. I’m usually a 10.5, but sometimes 11, so we were torn on which bindings to get, but in your video you said the boots are true to size. (I haven’t ordered the boots yet) That’s when I knew I messed up getting the large. I’ll try contacting customer support and seeing where that gets me. Thanks buddy.

Got a pair of Photons to go with my Step Ons and I love the response. Not much of a park guy as I'm at that age of being more cautious about my well-being (mainly my knees lol). But I chase the adrenaline rush from bombing down the run and carving 🏂🤙 the photons let me do exactly that!!

Im looking to buy my son a set of step on bindings and boots. He will only have one board and mostly carve with a little park every now and then. So im looking for a good all mountain set up. Would the genesis binding and photon boot be a good combination. My thinking is the genesis binding is a little softer and the photon boot is a little stiffer but could possibly be loosened up for the park with the ankle boa? Which binding do you use?
This comment eases my mind! Ordered the photon boots and the x bindings, tried doing as much research as possible but still makes me uneasy buying something so expensive without being able to try it. I'm the same were I stay away from all jumps/tricks but love the adrenaline of bombing runs and getting some deep carves!
