I use my nasturtiums leafs that look like huge Lilly pads as lettuce when making a tuna sandwich. The flowers are also edible. Great video.❤️🌺🌸🪴

Winter sowing is wonderful Sandy. So glad you have also had great success with it. A hoop house sounds lovely! I hope some day I can have a greenhouse to hang out in and start seeds this time of year. Sharing plants with others is just the best 🌱

What I love the most about this video is not ONLY the amount of plants you grew but learning that I can actually winter sow my tomatoes and peppers! I looked for information for a while but I couldn't find any because yes, they are a warm weather crop, but seeing your results is mind blowing! Thank you so much!

Hi Steph, thank you for the winter sowing update and I also wanted to mention after watching your video about using a tote for winter sowing I decided to grow my tomatoes and peppers using the tote. I’m in a zone 6B and my plants were on the small side compared to other gardens near me at first but they have been in my raised beds for almost three weeks now and they are catching up fast along looking so healthy. This tote method worked great for me and although I did need to water them a few times after the weather warmed up in early spring, this method was so much easier then the traditional I will be winter sowing in totes again. Thank you so much!

This was dated June 1st, 22 and thought it was 23. In 22 I had great results, it was 23 not so much and left my updated results on your other WS video. The foxglove in 23 did excellent and can’t wait to see them bloom this year in 24. With piecing together different info from your’s and other’s videos I believe I figured out my dilemma of dealing with this extreme high temp bubble and bad WS in February Z5a, WI.
Ugh! I’m so glad I saved back some perennial seeds as two I wanted globe thistle and Russian sage did not turn out in 23 WS. I will try those inside.

Hi there! Yes, it was from 2022, I will try to remember to do a ws reveal video this year again. I'm getting ready to begin seeds/winter sowing over the next week. The blue globe thistle works well with WS, give it another go. As for the Russian sage, I haven't tried that one. Echinacea & ladies mantle are other perennial seeds that have done well for me. So excited for you to enjoy your foxgloves this year, they are so beautiful 🌱

Everything is looking great! I've had only moderate success winter sowing in the past so only grew a few "more reliable" things this year. And yeah, I'm a big hand talker too, lol.

I learn something that will save me money. Thank you. Last year, I bought planting trays with humidity domes. Works well but expensive. I'll start saving gallon milk jugs. Also, my success rate with starting seed is abysmal. Maybe half will germinate, half of those gets eaten by pests (slugs and earwigs), throw in user error (me), and very few makes it to full planthood. I have successful sunflowers though. Those guys are tough.

I have to admit I was very distracted by the perfect concentric circles radiating out from the Japanese maple.
I just yesterday planted out some spring onions we had winter sown. They've been sitting there for months. I'm hoping they grow a bit. They looked about half done.
I really struggle with marigolds. This is the first year I've gotten any, really.
I've seen people who just sprinkle their poppy seeds around in the winter where they want them. Hard to control that way, but seemed very easy.
What we really liked about the winter sowing is how it makes gardening possible in the winter. Even if they don't all work, if you're using relatively inexpensive seeds, it can be so great to get through the dark of winter!
Uh oh - we pained some rocks red (not nearly as realistic as yours) to keep birds away from our strawberries. Oh, dear.
Well, I guess we'll try some bird netting! Cheers, Colleen and Jason

That was great Steph. Your poppies are looking amazing in a short time. I've never tried them before and would like to. Is it true I could just scatter the seeds this winter to have next spring? My overall sowing was also 50/50 but a lot algae. I'll still do it again for next year.

My marigold Eskimo didn't do well either, only 3. None of my blackeye Susan vines germinated, I will try again. Those Hungarian poppies will be beautiful once they bloom. What do use to write on your containers?

Hello, I start winter sowing in February, and put containers out Feb, Mar, and April. As I accumulate containers, I put more seeds out. Things that benefit from cold stratification, such as perennials and spring cool crops such as onions, can go out first. Then, toward April I winter sow annuals ie. Zinnias, Cosmos, gomohrena etc. Hope this helps. I also explain this in my winter sowing videos, which I have a whole Playlist on my channel if you would like to check it out. Thanks for watching!

Do you think that on the tote system if you were to drill the drain holes approximately 1/2" from the bottom, on the sides, that it would help retain moisture?

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Год назад

Hi, I dont know so much that it would help retain moisture, but it may allow more rain water in by having more holes. I pinned a comment you can take a look at about my thoughts on the tote experminent. Its pinned as first comment.

Hi Jeanne! those are crushed egg shells. I find they help keep slugs and snails away from my newly planted seedlings.

@@HookedandRooted I thought they may be egg shells. Thanks!

    • @HookedandRooted

Hi there! I soaked the seeds for a day or so before planting/sowing them. I believe it helps break down the hard outside "shell".
