Between 1957 and 1969, the CIA armed, financed, and assisted in the training of Tibetan guerrillas, initially operating inside Tibet and later from a base in Mustang, a remote corner of northwest Nepal. The project was code-named ST CIRCUS. Over several decades, filmmakers Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam interviewed participants in the operation and documented this chapter in Tibetan history. Their film, "The Shadow Circus: The CIA in Tibet," is the most significant record of this history. Recently, the Tibet Museum in Dharamshala opened an exhibition with the same name, featuring their photos, audio recordings, and video records. Kunleng host Tsering Kyi will speak with Tenzin Sonam to discuss the importance of this controversial operation carried out by Tibetan resistance fighters and the CIA.
