    Thank you for posting this video, it was a life saver when the top on my C70 2008 got stuck in the middle few days ago. I do not want to take any credit on this since I got the answer to my question after calling your company today but would you please be able to explain in your words the last step (missing in this video) to put the pressure release cable back in its position which was pulled at 3:56 in the video, so that other people can understand the last step too. Only once the cable have been "unreleased" then pumps start working or else the motor just makes noise and nothing happens.
    Thanks for all your efforts and keep doing the great work!

      Hello Akshat, thank you very much for your comments. You posed an excellent question. Indeed, the pressure relief valve will not allow th pump to build pressure once it has been released, so it needs to be reset once you are ready to use the pump again. This will allow the pump to move the top again, assuming that the problem you had with the top at first is fixed now. To reset the pressure relief valve, you will have to climb into the trunk, get access to the top of the pump, and push the button-shaped pressure relief valve back down. You will notice a groove in the valve. Make sure to manually move the locking lever on the pump back into this groove once the valve has been pushed down, so that the lever prevents the relief valve from popping up again once the pump builds pressure. You can see the button and the locking valve in our pump removal video ruclips.net/video/1IjMvJbMA08/видео.html. You can see me working on the relief valve starting at about 7:44 ruclips.net/video/1IjMvJbMA08/видео.html

    AWESOME Videos all of them on the C70 Transformer Metal Hood thanks for posting them very very informative and useful.
    Problem my 2004 C70 the hood is down in the trunk, and we cannot get it lifted, it seems stuck, not solidly stuck but it only moves a very small way.
    Scared to apply more force and break the glass rear screen.
    At the start we pulled the pressure relief cable, but we still seemed to have some pressure in the system as when we tried to push down on the faux canvas cover part actuating cylinders when we pushed down on one cylinder the other popped up, we solved that by jamming one and levering down on the other one. Also, the hinge cylinders needed a lot of force to get them to retract and to get the trunk lid to pivot at the back edge.
    Having managed all of that with two fairly strong adults, trying to lift the hood parts out of the trunk we could only get a few inches {At Most} movement then nothing more
    Now of course the pump runs but is doing nothing as the pressure relief valve needs to be reset AND we cannot do that as the roof parts are in the trunk and we cannot lift them out to get to the pump to reset the valve.
    HELP PLEASE
    thanks
    David

      Thanks for the kind words. The top for the C70 is very well engineered, and it is a joy to see the top for a true 4-seater cabriolet storing so tightly in the trunk. We enjoyed making this video, and all the other ones on removing and replacing the hydraulic components for the C70 top, because there was no similar video out there, and we kept getting desperate calls from Volvo owners. Almost all modern convertible tops are hydraulic, and the seals on the hydraulic cylinders will fail at some point. Regardless of whether it is a Ferrari, a Volkswagen, a Chevy or a Volvo. Hopefully, our videos will convince most C70 owners that they can take on this repair by themselves and save loads of money. The manual opening and closing is by far the most intimidating part of the whole top repair. If you can handle this, then you are in excellent shape!

      @@bigbuckstuxx3786 Thanks for asking. Could be the pump or a bad sensor or a leak in the system. You may want to have the dealer read and reset codes on it, with the hope that they can raise the top for you while they are at it, and identify the malfunctioning part. If it's the pump or a leak, then we can provide the part. If it's a sensor, that shouldn't be too expensive through the Volvo dealer.

    PHEW dont know what we would have done without these videos
    PROGRESS and REPORTS
    Hood is now UP and locked it was a RPITA and we had REAL DIFFICULTY operating that front lock latch while the hood was in the boot (trunk) No matter how hard we tried it would just not turn and this was after removing the ski hole trim so we could get good {better} access to the front lock latch Eventually we managed it, and then it was a weight lifting test (there being only two of us) to get the hood up and latched down THIS IS A FOUR MAN JOB no mistaking that. Now of course I had to drive the car back home with the error message on the dash and the alarm going crazy. Next job is to look at the pump as well as run VIDA to see what error codes we have now.....PHEWII
    I am not quite sure but wonder if the car on the video had all the hydraulic fluid drained out as the actuating cylinders on my car don't move very easily as they seem to be still under a little pressure, for sure the back hinge ones were again doing the double shuffle dance, force one down and then force the other down and the first one pops up again until you jam it hard.
    BUT FOR SURE without these awesome videos I can't imagine what the cost would have been at the local Volvo garage assuming that they had some REAL TIME experience with these C70 hoods and knew what they were doing.
    ONWARDS as they say this so far has been an ACT III DRAMA, I suspect it is going to be an ACT VI DRAMA.

      Thanks for the report. Yes, it is VERY difficult to do this as a two-person team only. Congrats on getting that far with just two people! I'm not super strong, just a regular guy, but it helped that we had some practice runs before shooting this video. Dealers always put four people on the job, and most dealer would rather not touch it. To answer your question, there was no air in the system when we did this.

    • @TopHydraulics

      You won't get much movement out of the front panel without the rear panel being unlocked. However, maybe that'll be enough for your purposes. Otherwise, you are best of waiting for the key or finding a way to bypass the key.

    I was Cleaning the internal storage cover with the top coming down and only had the front panel of the top released a little and accidentally pushed the the internal storage cover forward and when I went to move the top automatically it moved the trunk lid down onto the third panel and gave me a top malfunction error. I followed your video and just released the pressure cord and manually put the front panel down and used the 6 mm Allen wrench locked the front panel and pulled the internal storage cover down locked it and locked the cable for the rear panel and went and manually closed the trunk with a 4 mm. I get no messages but as soon as I drive it says not safe and makes a beeping noise. I am currently disabling the battery over night to see if that works. Also I reset the green button and pushed it down and the button did not come back up. When I try to use the automatic top down button I hear the noise and my windows go down and then back up and nothing else other than it detached the rear truck areas and unlocks the third panel cable. Does it take time for the hydrolic pump to reset ?

      We accidentally overlooked to show how the front lock cylinder is also locking the top in place inside the boot. You will have to unlock it manually with an Allen wrench the way you would when unlocking it from the front windshield. Space is tight, but you can do it. Remove the plastic plug in the front panel's headliner, insert the Allen wrench and turn the latch...

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  2 года назад +3

      If the problem with the top operation has been solved, then you can recommission it as follows:
      1) Accessing the pump through the trunk, push the pressure relief valve on top of the pump back in until it is secured.
      2) Release the rear frame lock again with the 4-mm Allen wrench via the worm gear in the trunk lid. This is necessary because the computer did not count the movement of the frame lock and thinks the top's position is illogical. Once the frame lock is back in the open position, the system should take over.

      @TopHydraulics  3 года назад

      Thanks for the detailed message. Don't worry, you can probably fix this yourself.
      Code CRM-C053 means there is a signal missing from the pump while the top is trying to activate. In most cases, this is caused by water intrusion in the trunk causing corrosion on the pump. If so, then you can fix this yourself by swapping pumps as shown in our video on pump replacement: ruclips.net/video/1IjMvJbMA08/видео.html
      Take a look at your pump first and see if it is corroded. If so, then swapping pumps will likely fix the problem. If not, then please get back to us to go through other possibilities.

      Yes, there are several possible problems: 1) When you manually turn the worm drive with the 4-mm Allen wrench in the trunk, the computer does not register that movement and will assume that the frame lock is not closed. 2) The roof panel cylinder under the middle roof panel might not have been extended all the way again and the computer doesn't read the middle section is secure this way. 3) The front may not be fully latched - that's rare.
      Obviously, you need to fix the initial problem that prevented your top from lifting with the push of a button. In many cases, that would be replacing the pump in the trunk, or it could be a bad sensor somewhere, or it could be a leak. Once the original problem has been fixed, you can normally get the computer to ignore the faults after you have manually put the top back into the position where it originally failed. Or you could go to someone who has the Volvo software on their computer and have them reset the system.

    Thank you so much, this is a great video. I was opening the top few days ago and the upholstery of the first section got stuck in between, so the convertible top fail to open or close. My son and I were able to low the top inside the trunk, in a open position. I have to release the hydraulic pressure and follow your instructions here did every thing you mention. Means the roof is fold inside the trunk, I pushed forward the rod on the cylinders the trunk cover cylinders are up and then I open the trunk and turn the 4mm key to look the front corner of the trunk lid. The problem is that as soon as I try to start the engine the "ROOF NOT LOCKED" display turn on. Do you have any quick help you can give me tto solve this problem? Thanks so much.

      Thanks for the detailed description. try to unlock the corners again with the 4-mm Allen drive in the trunk, flip the trunk lid back and see if the system picks up at that point. To make the pump build pressure again, you will have to push in the brass knob of top of the pump that was released when the release cable was pulled.

    Very well done videos (plural) sir A+. Would you be kind enough to you tell me/us if you have a video explaining how to replace the # 3 or any of the hall sensors that surround the # 3. The yellow illuminated button under the trunk lid on the right side that raises the roof panels while stored in the trunk (to access the trunk storage area a more easily) doesn't work any longer and a "Top Malfunction, See Manual" code is displayed on the gauge cluster. It sounds like from what I have read that it is the number 3 hall sensor that has become defective. But I have no idea how to locate/access it so that it can be replaced. Hope you're able to help give us some foresight into this type of repair. Thx

      Thanks for asking. We had this car available only for a bit over a day and are grateful for having been able to figure out and demonstrate the manual roof operation, plus removal and replacement of all hydraulic components in that time. Unfortunately, we did not have time to get into the sensor system on the C70 top. Since you have been able to derive that sensor #3 is bad, let's hope that you can find out through some more research on forums where it is located. Removing and replacing a sensor should be a simple task once you have located it and created access.
      I am sure that you will be successful. Once you have gathered all the necessary information, could you do the C70 community the favor of posting a summary (and idealy some photos) of the sensor location and replacement, and post a link to that forum post here?

      @TopHydraulics  2 года назад

      @@rorygallen433 Hmm, that's a brain teaser. I believe in both cases the step that happens before the trunk module flips forward again is the front locking cylinder locking the roof either to the windshield or to the frame inside the trunk. I wonder if the sensor for the top/front lock mechanism being closed is not getting that signal to the controller and if the problem is a chaffed wire somewhere that relaxes with the top being up but doesn't relax with the top being folded. The sensor is a Hall sensor, which is not a simple switch. Is this at all temperature dependent, i. e., do you get the miracle revival upon closing the roof after five minutes both when it's warm or cold outside? Do you get the same symptoms if you cycle the roof twice instead of once?

      Thanks for asking. If you get an error message that the roof is not locked, then either the roof is not locked or some micro switch is not working. More likely, the roof was not locked completely. Please double check that you have latched the front completely and the rear frame via the Allen wrench turning a worm gear back in the trunk. Once you have taken care of the "roof not locked" message and if the top still does not move, then I would inspect the pump next. See if it got rusty from sitting in water or if the fluid level is below minimum in the pump's reservoir. Here is the link to our pump video: ruclips.net/video/1IjMvJbMA08/видео.html

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  2 года назад

      Thanks for asking. The $1500 quote from the dealer certainly does not include parts and labor to replace all lines. More likely, they have quoted you for replacing one pair of lines and they were generous on the allocation of labor hours. The hoses that fail most commonly are the ones in the trunk, going to the cover panel cylinders. See this diagram: www.tophydraulics.com/diagrams/c70diagram.jpg
      You can do the job yourself, it is quite simple for the hoses in the trunk. We currently charge $149.99 per hose. The hoses come with o-rings for each end. You will have to identify which exact hoses you need according to the diagram linked above.

      Thanks for asking. It turns out that we overlooked one detail in the video. The front of the hard top locks inside the trunk when the top is all the way down. It locks by utilizing the same front locking mechanism that hooks into the windshield header. As you can see in the video on manually opening the top, this mechanism can be actuated with an Allen wrench inserted through an access hole in the trim of the front panel headliner. You will have to remove the plug that covers the access hole, then put an Allen wrench into the locking mechanism and turn it. Space is tight, but you can do it!

    I’ve got a 2007 C70, I have the trunk cover up and I’m trying to pull the roof out of the trunk but It won’t release. It has these 2 beefy plastic hinge “hooks” with rubber end boots that go into a crevice on the back window panel portion. It feels like maybe something other than that could be holding it back tho because we actually pried it out enough to bypass those “hooks” and still couldn’t lift the roof out. I can’t get to the 6mm allen on the front headliner because it’s stuck in the trunk. I tried to gain access to it by opening the rear seat frame to trunk plastic access panel but I am unsuccessful and I figured that didn’t matter until I was ready to latch the front down anyway. Everything else you mentioned in the video like the pressure release cable and lid catches have been messed with trying to get this roof out. Is there any difference in years or models? 1-- Is there an preventive Maintenance prescribed that C70 owners should be doing?
    2-- Just curious...IF my roof is NOT working, what could possibly be the reason for me to get 2 or 3 friends to put it down :} This is a great video and I am so grateful that you took the time to make it available but, how come you didn't start with it in the trunk simulating, "What do I do if I can't get the room back back up in an emergency?"
    LASTLY, I have heard that you should never stop the Roof operation midway but, does it ever just malfunction or stop by itself half-way up or down? And, if it does is there a quick fix to get it driveable if I am alone and away from home?

      Hello Larry, thanks for asking.
      1) The best preventative maintenance is making sure that the pump never drowns in rain water, so keep the weather seals in the trunk area clean. There are various treatments out there for keeping the rubber weather stripping subtle, such as "Gummipflege". I do not have a part number for you on such chemicals, as I'm guilty of not doing such preventative maintenance on my own convertibles. 2) You need to take the top down manually if there is a hydraulic leak in the front half of the system.
      There is no simple answer to your last question, depends on the circumstances. Don't stop the system half way for more than a couple of minutes unless you have to.

      @@TopHydraulics Thanks so much for getting back to me but, I travel with electronics for my biz so, my trunk is always try. I was more concerned with the cable(s) or String I see in my rear view mirror during top operation that seems to look like something may be unraveling. I didn't know if there is someway to replace that before it actually breaks or, if there is some sort of diagnostic available.

      @@MisterHumour Good question. Nobody has told us about the tiny nylon ropes in their tops unravelling. I don't know if Volvo actually sells those strings/ropes/cables. You may want to measure the diameter of these ropes and look for a high quality replacement online that is the same diameter, then cut and splice in a place where your splice will not interfere with the top operation.

      Pete Garyga assume you’ve figured it out by now- but what this video doesn’t address is how to retrieve the roof from the boot when you’ve not manually put it in there. What you need to do is push down the ski hatch so you can just about see the front of the front roof section. There you can access the Allen key latch that bolts the front section to the windscreen when the roof is up. You need to unlock it (it is a real faff) because once the roof is in the boot, it latches to Stop it from bouncing around. Once that is done, the roof will be free.

      Thanks for asking. The hard top C70 was introduced with model year 2006. If you have a hard top C70, then this video should apply to your car. I would be surprised if there were major differences between the manual top operation on a model year 2006 and later model years. The manual key lock is a bit hidden. If your car does not have it, then maybe you could consult your owner's manual on emergency unlocking procedures, or a fellow C70 owner with knowledge about this could chime in. Top Hydraulics offers all cylinders, hoses, and the pump. We rebuild the cylindes and the pump to be better than new ones inside (because we use much better seals and we are excellent at upgrading pumps), and we make new hoses that are far better than the original ones.
      If your pump is bad, then your best option would be getting a rebuilt one from Top Hydraulics first and then sending back your old one. It sounds like you are not n the US. We currently charge $80 for international shipping to most countries. We ship via FedEx International Priority, which is very fast.
      Here is the pump on our website: www.tophydraulicsinc.com/en/volvo/700-c70-hydraulic-pump.html. You can send us yours first, or we can send you one from our inventory first.

      @@regisguichane2995 Hello Regis, nice to hear from France! We ship internationally every day, and a few times per week, our parcels go to France. If the pump was bad and there are no other problems with the roof, then you can simply swap (replace) pumps, push the relief valve button down, secure the cable, and operate the top again. It is rare that the computer needs to be reset with Volvo software. Normally, the error codes go away by themselves. Sometimes, you may have to disconnect the negative battery cable over night to make the computer "forget" old error codes. You do not have to purge the circuit of oil. We ship the pump already filled with fluid, so it is "plug and play". If there was a leak elsewhere in the system, then you will have to find that, of course, and take care of it.

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics  6 лет назад

      @@regisguichane2995 You have both options, and they cost the same in the end. Go to www.tophydraulicsinc.com/en/volvo/700-c70-hydraulic-pump.html. You will see "select order method". Select "send in your pump first" if you want to send us your pump first, then we rebuild it, then we ship it back. Select "order now with core exchange", and the price goes up by US$200 (currently), which is your core deposit. You get the full $200 deposit back once we get a decent core back from you, with no parts missing. That should make your decision easy to go with the core exchange, where we ship a part from our inventory first, then you send back your old pump for a partial refund.
