Utopia started in 1974 as "Todd Rundgren's Utopia", a 6 piece prog rock band led by Todd Rundgren. Their 1974 self-titled album is regarded as a prog masterpiece consisting of just 4 songs including the epic 30 min "The Ikon" which filled the whole of side 2 on the original vinyl album. Their next album was a live album called "Another Live", still a 6 piece but with some personal changes. Then big changes from then on es they became a four piece - with Todd Rundgren (vocals, guitar), Roger Powell (vocals, keyboards) and John 'Willie' Wilcox (vocals, drums) from the "Another live' line-up joined by Kasim Sulton (vocals, bass) with Todd and Kasim handling most of the lead vocals and instrumental trade offs between Todd's guitar and Roger's keyboards become part of their sound. Their 1st album as a 4 piece, the Egyptology themed "Ra" (1976) was their first as just 'Utopia' and was a transitional album bringing in more rock. The tour for that album featured a large Sphinx head and a 20 ft high pyramid which Todd would climb during the epic 'Singring and the Glass Guitar' and after tying a harness to his ankle he would throw himself off of the top at the climax of his guitar solo! Their next album "Oops Wrong Planet" (1977) featured shorter more rock influenced songs. We then get to "Adventures in Utopia" (1980) an album where the band wanted to write songs that drew influences from some of the most successful bands and songs on the chart at the end of the 70s. The album was their most commercially successful with the pop flavoured "Set Me Free" (written and lead vocal by Kasim) a USA top 30 hit. 'Caravan' is one of the top songs on the album and features Roger on lead vocals. The album was presented as a kind of soundtrack album for a fantasy TV show called "Adventures in Utopia" and each song was supposedly from a different episode - 'Caravan' is listed as being from episode 8 'The Oasis'. The band personnel stayed the same for the rest of their time together as Utopia with another 5 studio albums released and various compilations and live albums following on. They re-formed for a short tour of Japan in the early 90s (with a live album and DVD recorded and released) and then reformed again in 2018 (I think) for a major USA tour with a set list taken from their whole career (from which live DVD CD set was released. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, Roger Powell could not take part in the tour and a brilliant young keyboard player called Glasys took his place and did a fantastic job of honouring Roger's legacy with the band. Todd still tours and releases music and Kasim is in his band - Kasim also still tours and releases his won music too. Todd's solo career started in 1970 and has always been more commercially successful than his work with Utopia and as well as a string of solo albums (on many of which he sings and pays everything himself) covering all types of musical styles and genres and of course he is world renowned producer too having worked with the likes of Sparks, Meatloaf (he produced and played guitar on 'Bat Out of Hell'. All of Utopia played on that album), Hall & Oates, XTC, Patti Smith, The Tubes, Cheap Trick, Steve Hillage, The Band, Grand Funk Railroad, New York Dolls etc

Just an added bit of fun trivia: Kasim Sultan's bandmates from the E Street Band, Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan, also played on 'Bat Out of Hell.' Rundgren wisely ascertained the Springsteen-like qualities in Jim Steinman's compositions and imported Bruce's backups to reinforce the sound. Sheer genius!

I first saw Todd Rundgren's Utopia during the 1974/1975 tour of the first album. I can't remember the exact date but it was also Kevin Ellman's birthday. (While trying to research Kevin Ellman's birthday I ran across an 11year old video from an CNBC broadcast. This clip was a short Power Trio version of The Ikon featuring Todd, Kasim and Kevin, who was a CNBC financial consultant/contributor).
The original 6 member lineup of Utopia is still my favorite version of the band; and that concert still ranks in my top 5. When that stage curtain parted and that band broke into The Utopia Theme I was charged, musically, forever.

Todd is a musical genius. You may know this from previous comments already but Todd produced the Bat Out of Hell album for Meatloaf and also the 1975 album War Babies for Hall & Oates. That is an album worth an exploration. Very underrated and the songs have a similar sound and feel to Caravan because Utopia played on the album. Loved the reaction. ❤️✌️

Todd is SO underrated as a guitarist. Actually he’s underrated at everything he does and he’s one of the best that’s ever been. I hope you’ll get into more utopia/Todd Rundgren. This one was sung by the keyboardist Roger Powell. Great song. As for the guitar/keyboard trading licks, they would do this a lot. ‘Sunburst Finish’ is another good example

I got introduced to Utopia in 1979, my senior year of high school, in Whittier, California by Mike and Nancy, coworkers at Farrells Ice Cream Parlor in the Whittwood Mall. I was played Singring and the Glass Guitar off their RA album. It guided my music searches for everything Todd Rundgren. In January of 1982 I entered the Air Force when I was 20 years old, and every search for music meant finding new Todd and Utopia material and new material I got. This search continued right up to 2013 when my dear friend Becky Grutell took me to see Todd at the Canyon Club in LA. He played his new album State. He invited people to go on stage and dance on the last song. Back stage I told Todd that I've been promoting him and his music by asking all live acts if they have any Todd in their collection.( which still happens today) asking groups if they like Todd Rundgren. I then autographed a disc golf mini from my recent accomplishment, disc golfing in 50 states in 50 days. I gave Todd another mini asking for his autograph, which he did, then I simply asked Todd, can I give you a hug,Todd? which he said yes to. Have a great day people! Thanks guys

Keyboardist Roger Powell wrote this song and sings lead vocal. Powell was a protege of Robert Moog, the inventor of the early model synthesizer. Powell was a Moog sales representative. He's done a few obscure solo albums starting with 1973's pre-Utopia 'Cosmic Furnace'. Rundgren's idea for Utopia was to have a democratic band where each member had a chance to write and sing their own material, even drummer John Wilcox. Powell's an OK singer. Bassist Kasim Sulton is an excellent singer who could match Rundgren and sing higher parts. Sadly, Roger Powell has been unable to tour for a long time now due to health problems, but Kasim Sulton is still a member of Rundgren's touring band. For Nick I recommend the Proggy song 'Sunburst Finsh' and for Lex the Pop-Rock 'Love In Action', but they have a metric ton of great material.

    Some great songs from Utopia

I've always found Todd Rundgren a bit difficult to listen to at times, but Adventures in Utopia is his finest album IMO. There's several more classics there, 'Last of the new wave riders' being the best. 'Caravan' was written and sung by Roger Powell, the keyboard player. Reminds me of late 70s Blue Oyster Cult at the start

Nick, I just want to addd one other thing. Many people are going to suggest his 3rd solo album "Something Anything". I just want to give you a bit of background on that record because it's part of rock history. It's a double album first of all, that's not a big deal right? It's no big deal until you find out that Todd was 23 at the time and 3/4 of the record was recorded in a studio where he wrote, sang the leads vocals, produced it and played ALL of the instruments, yes ALL of them. Then the last 1/4 was recorded in the studio live with, get this sparse overdubs virtually none, all this was achieved in 1971, the album was released in 1972. Todd was officially inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame just this past year for his music and contributions as record producer ( The Cars, Grand Funk Railroad, Meatloaf, & XTC to name a few). He's worth exploring further.

In all my years, I never likened Roger Powell's voice to Eric Woolfson (Alan Parsons), but I totally get it now. They are extremely similar. I always loved this song because I love all things Todd. Beyond that, it's just so clean. Lots of rock and prog elements fused together. Adventures in Utopia is a really nice album. And getting Lex to air-guitar was a nice bonus!

Many say "Todd is God". He has been and still is a wizard in the studio. His production was amazing. No surprise, as he is always at the forefront of music tech, a huge innovator and a producer for folk like Badfinger, Meat Loaf, and XTC on some albums.
There's SO much Todd Rundgren to hear. And Utopia is the biggest subset of Todd while having a strong identity different than Todd himself.
Todd put out something like 20 albums himself, and another 9 or 10 with Utopia.
Try "Shinola" from the Utopia album "Swing To The Right". Todd is in wonderful voice on this one.
    Blessings.

That was real good. I hear the RUSH in the middle section, never made that connection before, you have a good ear.
This overall reminded me of the band STARCASTLE, an "American Yes" contender, though they never lasted long enough to reach those heights.
Starcastle was prog but came from an amercan radio-friendly Pop tradition where Yes was based in British Psychedelic Rock.
Starcastle's singer was the original singer of REO Speedwagon (great voice!), both from Champaign, Illinois.

Somehow I picked up on Utopia in the late 1980s or early 1990s during a period when I was placing more emphasis on vocal music and less on instrumental music. All four of Rundgren, Powell, Sulton, and Wilcox sing lead on songs, and the backup vocals are just to die for - in this song, check out the "It's a sandstorm - taken by surprise...". Kasim Sulton is bass+vox goalz for me; his voice is just ethereal. I love the stuff.

Hi Guys, Great reaction. Loved this track ! I saw Todd live in '79 at Knebworth. He wasn't the main attraction, that was a rock group you may know, that went by the name Led Zeppelin. Ahem ! Lol ... You mentioned a not very high amount of plays on Spotify. I don't use Spotify. I wont put my music collection on something I cant physically touch. Just one good sun burst and all our computer files could be lost. I do make copies of my physical albums onto computer, and make lossless quality cd compilations back onto blank discs or a usb stick. I did have a computer totally crash, about 5 years ago, loosing my digital music collection completely....but luckily I had the physical albums and put them all back on eventually. At my age as I'm sure with many of us as teenagers during the 70's, much prefer a physical album collection, and with many artists from that era, you are likely to see low plays on Spotify ... because we old rockers are playing the physical albums ! Lol ... For these artists to be heard by a new generation we need > YOU !!! Byeee Jim X

As everyone has mentioned this is Todds band and still tours with most of the members (well at least Kasim Sultan). I believe that is Todd on vocals, guitar and I think keys as well if I'm not mistaking, I know he plays all those instruments. You should actually go to his "Another Live" with Utopia. This was Todd & Utopia's real prog phase and it's all quite good (for it's time). Todd's solo material is more pop but in the best sorta way, melodic, catchy singable choruses and relatable lyrics etc., If you get to 'Another Live" I'd recommend the opener "Another Life" and the closer "Just One Victory". All the other songs on that record are just as good, but I know Lex likes openers and closers as well, so all you Todd fans please don't say "ohhh no it has to be The Seven Rays" etc. Yes I agree but these are just starting points I'm suggesting based on my history of being fans of Nick & Lex and having very good knowledge of what they appreciate.

They have changed some members, but their early stuff was REALLY prog, such as the song UTOPIA which is only released as a LIVE song. The album also has some amazing studio stuff such as THE IKON. Todd is also an amazing POP songwriter.

Ironically, in 2012, Blue Öyster Cult would hire former Utopia bassist, Kasim Sulton. At the time, I was in my high school/guitar hero phase & pissed cuz Todd stayed behind the keys all show...thankfully, Buck Dharma took care of that.👍

I don't know Utopia as well as I know Todd's solo work, but (as expected from Todd) everything I've heard is stellar. You can hear him on backing vocals in this song.
Seconding the suggestion to dig into Nearly Human as an album - it's *fantastic*. "Parallel Lines" is a lifelong favorite of mine (no really, I asked my parents what 'parallel' meant because of it), and "Hawking" is a straight-up masterpiece.
