@@L33Reacts Great reaction. The 1978 tour opened with "Real Man" and the show only got better. Todd has a very eclectic catalog, including radio-friendly hits like these and his more prog sound with Utopia, then his career went into about forty directions. He has produced some great albums for a lot of artists and has been an important part of some really cool projects. My favorite time seeing him was when he was part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band. He has a wide variety of styles shown in his albums over the years and is respected for his engineering and studio wizardry. I think you will love Utopia.

Todd can do everything. He's a pop God, but he had an electronic phase, a prog phase, an experimental stage. He had that Philly soul sound in his pop phase. Was finally elected in the rock n roll hall of fame last year. Considered to be a genius producer and produced multiple large albums including meatloaf, cheap trick, Patti Smith, hall n oates and more. Unbelievable musician as well. Incredible guitarist, and played all instruments on his masterpiece something/anything. On Rolling stones list of best albums of all time.

Todd has SO MUCH good stuff, but stylistically he’s impossible to pin down. He’s got soul-tinged like this, rock, experimental stuff, and prog periods like the first Utopia album. You have a TON more to explore here.
He also has produced a ton of great albums for other people, like Meatloaf and XTC.
He’s incredible live, I’ve seen him a dozen times.

If you want to check out Todd with Utopia there’s a great video on RUclips of them performing “Seven Rays” on the U.K. TV show “ The Old Grey Whistle Test” from 1975 - same show that the recent Frankenstein by The Edgar Winter Group video you watched came from. Speaking of the Edgar Winter Group , Edgar, Rick his guitarist and Dan his bass player all played on the last song of Side 1 of Todd’s album Initiation - from which Real Man is the opening track. A stunning song (that features a reprise of Real Man). Todd’s work, both solo and with Utopia, spans so many musical styles and genres. I’ve been a fan since mid 70s - so much great stuff!

The road through the world of Todd Rundgren is long and winding. The man has addressed almost all styles you can think of. That might seem daunting but his signature is so strong, it holds his world firmly together. A good starter for Utopia is the Communion with the sun(album Ra). Another great Todd song is Zen Archer(A wizard, A true star).

Hey Lee, good to see you checking out Todd Rundgren. He's been writing and producing music since about 1966 and his 1st band Nazz began in 1967. He's written hundreds of songs some of whom you've probably heard already but didn't know it. Nazz was like the Who and Beatles had a punky pop garage band in Philadelphia. All the Nazz LP's have some heavy songs, ballads and pop tunes too. His solo LP's " Something / Anything" " Runt" and it's follow up " Runt : the Ballad of Todd Rundgren" are amazing.

I know Hello It’s Me is his biggest hit, but he’s got so many songs that are better. Recommended: Initiation, Black & White, The Last Ride, You Cried Wolf, Lockjaw, Love Science, Temporary Sanity, Stood Up, Party Liquor and Serious. Todds' album "Healing" is lengthy and amazing. A promoter discovered me in the 70s. I met him in NYC. He gave me an album and asked me to record 2 songs acapella. I was 21, noone really cared or was excited so...I blew it. The promoter called me a lot asking when I would get him the tape. I was working 2 jobs and singing/partying with friends at night. Ended up driving across country on 3 days notice shortly after. Went for a 2 week visit and stayed a year in CA. Did meet a promoter, Cheap Trick, The Babys and Foreigner. Ahh the lightning moments.

Boy are you in for a treat with Todd. He has many, many excellent albums and the most amazing live album ("Back to the Bars").
"Real Man" is the opening track on the album "Initiation". "Real Man" is reprised at the end of "Death of Rock and Roll".
The double album "Something/Anything?" is an excellent beginning. Stand-out songs beside are:
    "Sweeter Memories"
"It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference"
    "Cold Morning Light"
"The Night The Carousel Burnt Down"
"Marlene" which is simply beautiful (and about one of his first girlfriends.
    "One More Day (No Word)"
    "Couldn't I Just Tell You"
    "Torch Song"
    "Hello It's Me"

WOW! Wonderfully stunned when this came up in the Q. Todd is a wonderful genius who is starting to get the deserved respect after the Hall of Fame. It was a treat for a long time Todd fan to watch someone become hit by the talent. I really respect your taste and could see that you got it. The best part for me was the belief that you might be inclined to look into Rundgren and, as a musician, you would quickly appreciate who he is. His production talents, his musicianship recording many of his songs playing every instrument and his song writing skills and vocals. Dive into his 50+ year old catalog and this is the genre of music you’ll find; soul, hard rock, metal, ballads, broadway, Gilbert & Sullivan, rock anthems, prog rock, pop rock. One album acapella, one album boss nova, one album Beatles-copies and one double album set that commonly appears on 500 best album lists.
No need for suggestions, you’ll find them.

Todd has a theory that the higher frequencies carry more musical information than lower ones. That's one of the reasons he ignored the prevailing 60s and 70s wisdom that you could only get about 40-45 minutes of music on an LP without losing quality. His landmark 1973 album A Wizard, A True Star contained just under 56 minutes of music, one of the longest single disc LPs. It's also one of his best and certainly one of the most imaginative and impressive I had ever heard at the time. As with a lot of his pre-Utopia albums, although their are other band members and session men present, he played most of it himself. Probably hard to showcase here since many of the tracks merge or overlap each other.

Todd's Something/Anything? album is one of the most melodic double albums ever produced and Todd performed all instrumentals and vocals on the first three sides by himself (if memory serves). Hits like, Hello It's Me, I Saw the Light and It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference made extensive radio play, but the deep cuts are also amazing; like, Sweeter Memories, Sounds of the Studio/Breathless, Saving Grace, etc. His solo stuff is more melodic and popish, but with a prog bent always. His Utopia stuff rocks out and is heavily prog. Considering his skill as a multi-instrumentalist (he is a guitar savant, actually), his pioneering production skills (e.g. Bat Out of Hell), his inventive/pop-sensitive song writing chops and his rainbow hair. he truly is a Wizard, A True Star! An amazing rabbit hole, especially for the thoughtfully inclined with their music. Great reaction!!

He really makes me think of where Daryl Hall got his inspiration.

Dude! Loved your reactions especially to ‘Real Man’. Here’s Todd climbing Utopia’s Pyramid back in 77. The Real Man climbed this like 25 times, while playing his Anke guitar. No safety harness, cables etc! 😮. ❤️👍. ruclips.net/video/ej9xzLCyiWE/видео.htmlsi=ysbTr2teS-WC2m6P

My suggestion if you want to better appreciate Todd Rundgren is to listen, in their entirety, the three album sequence he did from '72-'74; Something / Anything, A Wizard / A True Star (AWATS) & Todd. The challenge with Todd is that he rarely did the same thing twice so audiences couldn't predict what he would do. Something / Anything had some range with some hard rock, some art rock & a few other styles but a whole lot of excellent pop songs which got him a lot of attention. He wasn't so sure that he was interested in that kind of intention so AWATS went in a totally different direction with side 1 a continuous sound montage with an emphasis on psychedelic & side two paying a lot of homage to the Philly Soul sound he grew up with.
Another truly unusual album he did worth checking out is "A Capella" where he spliced & diced magnetic tape, loops, sampling etc (before modern computers!) in order to create a soundscape of songs using only his voice.
