  • **2022 UPDATE: P14S Gen 2 has MAJOR TrackPoint DEFECT: see comments* Lenovo ThinkPad X1 G9 HD screen vs P14s Gen 2 4K UHD Matte display reviewed. Two lightweight, powerful and portable machines. POV on weight, keyboard and screen to general impressions, as I look to find a laptop to replace my 6 year old P50, daily driver.
    X1 Gen 9 specs:
    - i7 1165G7 + 16 GB LPDDR4x + 14.0" (1920 x 1200) matte 400 nits IPS display
    - comparable X1 G9 build on Lenovo USA website: 20XW00FSUS
    P14S Gen 2 specs:
    - i7 1165G7 + 16gb RAM (8gb upgradable) + 4gb Nvidia Quadro T500 GPU + 14" 4K (3840 x 2160) matte display w/ Dolby Vision HDR (500 nit brightness)
    - comparable P14 G2 build on Lenovo USA website: 20VX007NUS
    - under $1.5K at my time of purchase
    Things I forgot to mention in the video:
    - X1 G9 bezel is smaller -- about 1 pen wide for top bezel and .75 pen width for the side bezel (vertical) VS 2 pens wide for the top bezel and 1.25 pen width for the side bezel (vertical) on the P14S.
    - Speakers are on the side of the X1 G9 whereas the P14S has them alongside the power button area
    - The stickers on the hand rest area are a terrible move by lenovo and cheapens the laptops overall look
    This is not meant to be a comprehensive review, but rather a subjective assessment of two very similar machines (specs wise) to help any in the market.This was done in one take with no editing....because I am lazy, but I hope you find this helpful

    ***UPDATE 2022***
    There is a major TrackPoint DEFECT which impacts P14S Gen 2 & most new ThinkPad laptop models. I DO NOT RECOMMEND buying the P14S Gen 2 as the TrackPoint (mouse) simply stops working. See reply for more ->

    • @misterm7465
      @misterm7465  2 года назад +6

      I have Returned my P14S Gen 2 (sadly) and Do Not Recommend the P14S Gen 2 anymore as the TrackPoint (mouse) will stop working randomly and repeatedly. TrackPoint is the only mouse I use on my laptop and a ~$1400+ ThinkPad without a functioning Trackpoint is unacceptable.
      Most new ThinkPads are impacted by the trackpoint bug in addition to the P14s Gen 2 so our choices are very limited. Here is a non-exhaustive list of impacted models from the forums:
      T14 | T14s | T15 | T15 Gen 2 | T15p | | P14S Gen 1 | P14S Gen 2 (Intel + AMD) | P15 | P15s | P15s Gen 2 | P15g | P15v | P17 | P53 | X1 Extreme Gen 2 | X1 Yoga Gen 5 | T490
      Since the X1 Gen 9 trackpoint/mouse is unimpacted, I suggest it over the P14 Gen 2, if you actually care about using TrackPoint. If you do not care about TrackPoint, then everything is okay.
      Personally, I am waiting for new model refreshes to see if TrackPoint defects are fixed since it impacts a large lineup ... :(
      **my other video with more info: ruclips.net/video/FP8tyXmrAAs/видео.html
      Big companies will only change their way when they understand consumers want defect free products.
      Please tell @Lenovo @LenovoUS @LenovoThinkpad on social media to fix the bug, which they have been ignoring for 1 year.

      howdy -- welcome to the ThinkPad ecosystem. Please beware that the p14s Gen 1 is impacted by the TrackPoint bug (like the Gen 2 and other thinkpad models).
      TrackPoint is one of the best parts about using a ThinkPad (it is also exclusive to ThinkPad) and the bug is something that needs to be fixed so you, me and everyone can have the best experience as a ThinkPad user. Lenovo needs to fix the problem, but enough people aren't yelling at them to fix the problem, apparently.

      The track point is new for me and I can see the utility of typing and controlling the pointer with the same hand position. I am still training my finger to be fast and precise...
      I chose Lenovo due to the reputation in reliability and the Linux certification. However I am really enjoying the keyboard. I can see that once I get used to the pointer, it will become a much more comfortable laptop for working.
      @@misterm7465 I have not experienced the bug, and I run Linux, so if the bug is a driver issue I may never see it. However if and when I do, I will surely add my voice. On the Linux front, it has been really nice that everything just works.

    this couldn't have come at a better time! I just bought the P14s gen 2 and have been unhappy with the feel of it compared to my T480s (which was very similar to the X1C g7) I bought the P14s gen 2 with maxed out specs (aside from FHD screen) for 800 british pounds (web price is 1800). I love the idea of the carbon but I can also mod in some of the better features for less money: UHD screen, glass touchpad, and the upgrades will cost me only 150GBP, so I'll have a nearly perfect machine for 950GBP with actually-maxed out specs. The X1 carbon with about half the RAM and same CPU would cost about 2000GBP in the UK... it's a tough sell even though it is the more premium feel device. The X1C9 benefit besides lightweight, built materials/feel is that the PCIe M.2 drive runs at full PCIe 4.0 speeds (7000MB/s) vs every other current ThinkPad that runs PCIe 3.0 speeds despite having the same CPU. Lenovo gimped their lower devices to sell more X1C9.

      Honestly if you have the 1080 screen, I would keep it (vs upgrading screens) to preserve the battery life. Windows scales up everything to 250% when at 4K, so you're effectively at 1080 resolution for 99% of usage (at-least in my case) and I have actually downgraded my default resolution to 1080p to try and extend battery life. While the 4K screen is brighter, it's something we'd rarely benefit from as running at full brightness would completely destroy portable battery life.
      Lenovo has been making a lot of short sighted decisions on their products. I've been experiencing some issues including trackpoint stopping working regularly (check the lenovo forums for a "workaround" -- it's been neglected by lenovo for 9 months impacting ~10 models ) and an other more minor issue w/ external keyboard... which has made me weary of keeping this for 6+ yrs as I did my p50 (mostly the trackpoint issue)... I plan to put together a quick video on everyday usability thoughts shortly.
      That said, the specs and value for money on the P14S G2 is great... it's a shame they keep pushing prices up for all their machines, especially now using the chip shortage as the perfect scapegoat to extract higher profits and reduce quality.

    Hello from the future 👋Thanks for this review!!! I just purchased a secondhand P14s gen 2 (AMD Ryzen 7 5850u) for next to nothing! Has 32GB RAM and a 2TB NVMe. This thing is a little rocket! Very pleasantly surprised with the performance of the R7 5850u - even in 2024! The only thing I don't like is the touchpad - it sometimes misses two finger scrolling swipes. I have read that the touchpad can be replaced with a glass one, so I might look into doing this. I'm getting about 6 hours of "dev time" from a full charge, which is surprising considering the battery health is at 66%. I might look at replacing the battery too... Anyway, very happy with this little unit - it runs Linux like a champ! 😉

    I had a X1 Carbon G9 on order, but I was concerned about the glossy screen and more shallow key travel. Not sure why it doesn't have a matte screen option like the very similar X1 Yoga does. I ended up cancelling and getting a T14 G2 (5850U/32GB/4K) instead. The original ship time was estimated at 4+ months, but shipped after only 6 weeks. Noticably lighter than my 5y/o Thinkpad Yoga 14 and better in every other way as well.

      Personally, I was super disappointed in having to return it, especially after spending so much time researching before buying then spending many days setting it up, up only to discover the mouse stops working... The community forum was able to craft a quick fix, but as an avid TrackPoint user, it was hard to imagine long term ownership of a machine w/ a defect that lenovo simply isn't willing to fix (so far)

    Phew, the screen of the X1 looks despicable compared to the P14s. It's supposed to be a pretty good IPS panel, but next to the P14s it looks like a completely washed-out TN. At 8:28 with the sunrise you can really see the difference in colors. The X1 looks like its colors are bleached out in comparison. Brutal difference.

  • @Alex-wd3xq
    @Alex-wd3xq 8 месяцев назад

    What is not mentioned here is the Ram on P14s despite being upgradable (8gb soldered + up to 32gb upgrade) you are really stuck with 16gb ram if you want it to work in dual channel mode so 8 + 8 gb, any ram upgrades beyond that means you get it to work in single channel mode which is inferior performance to a X1C gen 9 with 32 gb soldered on. The built quality of an x1c is superior to a p14s and despite having a slightly darker screen you will get way better battery performance from a fhd x1c than the 4k version of p14s. I guess the only real benefit from choosing a P14s is if you really need discrete graphics even though the graphics card on this model is on the lower end.

    Do you think that the P14s gen 2 is suitable for 3D modeling?

    • @misterm7465
      @misterm7465  2 года назад +3

      Thanks! the nvidia quadro card is marketed for professional use, like CAD, 3D workflows and "precise calculations" rather than gaming, so I believe it will be suitable.
      That said, I don't have experience with 3D modeling, so can't say with certainty. The P14S's T500 will certainly be better than Intel Xe Graphics, but if you have serious 3D Modeling workloads, I would suggest looking at a more powerful workstation -- something like the P15 or P1 Gen 4 -- where you'll sacrifice portability (size, weight), but get way more GPU power (albeit at a much higher price-point).
      I also uploaded a video on passmark benchmark readouts b/w the X1 and P14S Gen 2, if you'd like to see how the GPU performs

    Perfect review :) sent back my XC9 aswell and looking for P14s Gen2/Gen3 with 4K matte HDR + Nvidia. Couldn't use the keyboard on the carbon while the P14s keyboard is perfect! especially that trackpoint buttons yes! Batterylife was way inferior on the carbon for a FHD mode. I think the P14s lasts as long with its 4K display even! Carbon was loud al the time and when silencing it in battery-mode, performance was cut in half like of a DualCore X1 Carbon 5th Gen xD Maybe even going AMD here for more battery, less fan noise and cooler system aswell as way more performance (especially for a workstation) I wait until new gen comes out in a few months :)

      howdy Marvin, please hold off on the p14s Gen 2 (if you're considering it). I personally had to return mine (and just hit publish on a video that I thought I uploaded earlier) due to the TrackPoint issue that Lenovo refuses to fix. The machine was great (for the most part) but the mouse stopping randomly and becoming unusable throughout the day was frustrating, especially for a product I intended to buy for 6+ yrs of use.
      I am hoping they fix it in the Gen 3 (especially as most thinkpad models are impacted by the bug). Now that I am back in the market (again!), I will be looking to avoid 4K display. While the screen brightness is great, the battery life degradation for higher resolution sucks. Also, everything is upscaled 250% -- so it's pretty much like 1080p resolution on a 14" display. Iirc the fan was noticeably more active on the P14s Gen 2 when I had it, also... not a big deal, but a datapoint for anyone reading this and curious.

    • @Veg-Power
      @Veg-Power 2 года назад

      Hey @@misterm7465
      Yeah, right after commenting I saw ur other comments about that manners. But with scaling pixels won't be less dense so the displayed quality remains more brilliant even with scaling. I plan to scale it to 200%. I'd rather have a 3,2K or 2,8K Display but the 4K here has really top-specs besides the resolution. Next-Gen Carbon has 2,8K (even OLED) while P14s G3 will have 2,3K 16:10 screen (but reduced keytravel...)
      Batterylife was tested by notebookcheck just fine (9 hours) with 4K but it was with AMD, mhh. Fan noise should be better with AMD, too. But maybe waiting for the next Gen then. Hopefully they fix that trackpoint-bug... on Carbon 9th Gen I didn't experience it though.

    • @misterm7465

      @@Veg-Power don't get me wrong, the screen is beautiful and truly brilliant! All my prior research pointed me to pick it and I was happy with it, but I would prefer an extra hr of battery if lower res could provide it.
      I didn't know details have emerged around the new gen models, and will take a look. I appreciate the intel!
      also, X1 G9 is immune from the trackpoint bug, one of the few models that appear to be immune as they're not using a synaptics driver (iirc)

      4k display uses more battery, everything is scaled up to 250% so it's pretty pointless although the brightness was nice -- I forced resolution down to 1080p to preserve battery when I had the machine. That said, I returned it due to the trackpoint bug noted above. If I were buying another machine I would opt for a matte 1080p display and avoid 4K for such a small screen.

    How do you feel about the Lenovo T15 Generation 2 laptop or the HP Elitebook 840 G7/G8

    • @misterm7465
      @misterm7465  2 года назад

      Be aware that the T15 G2 is impacted by the trackpoint bug (noted above) but I would prefer it over the Elitebook, if deciding b/w the two.
      My POV (although haven't researched the Elitebook model much):
      - I hate using trackpads on laptop and trackpoint is exclusive to ThinkPad. If you haven't used it, you have to try the TrackPoint mouse. It's a gamechanger for working on a laptop, and provides almost the same level of productivity as having a full size mouse.
      - build quality of ThinkPad of HP is usually better, including upgradability of components + spill resistance features etc. I have also a few HP machines that have went to crap in the past, so have low affinity to the brand
      - Thinkpads hold up very well to abuse; I've been using the brand for over a decade and my machines have held up very well, so my desire to switch to another manufacturer is very low.
      - i have access to corporate discounting for ThinkPads :) -- you may be able to get some EPP discounts with some internet searching also, so you can custom build a nicely spec'd out machine for below "retail" price

      the X1 went back to lenovo. Based on my 'everyday usage' of the p14s g2, I get about 5 hours of battery life ... this is with the screen resolution downscaled to 1080 resolution (since Windows scales up 250% at 4K resolution) and Battery Power at the most conservative setting.
      Usage includes having multiple windows with at-least 100 tabs open. In addition to having another browser open with it's own set of tabs. YT video streaming, local video watching and streaming from non-YT sites, light peer to peer downloading and an aggressive 3rd party firewall app running, as part of testing that gets me to about 5 hrs of battery life.
      There are plenty of videos re: X1 Carbon G9, which usually includes battery life information. Overall Battery is okay, nothing special although quite good, imo, for the lightweight form factor.

      You also may be able to score a very cheap Thinkpad from big companies that regularly update their corporate laptop fleets. Windows 10 is about to go out of support and there will be a LOT of laptops that will be upgraded by big corporations very soon, as they will have to update to WIN 11 to maintain IT Security updates. There should be a big wave of pre-owned ThinkPads flooding the market soon.
